Excellent rundown.... Except that it costs 15 points...
The reason for the tournie limits on vehicle cards..... What were they
thinking?

It should have come standard on most vehicles or been more unique.
In the Grand Tournament, players lost points for not modelling AA on their
vehicles.
I've been trying to design AA for my IG vehicles that can be removed to
represent it blowing off.

This Vehicle Card was printed in the 40,000 Battles Book. The book is
no longer available from GW in the US. It costs 15 points and basicly
you ignore the fist roll that penetrates armor.
Everyone else told you about but didn't mention that some places still
have the 40K battles books on the shelf..a friend just found one in
Orlando from Enterprise 1701 they might still have some and have a web
site..I got mine from a store in New Mexico and there are several
vehicle cards in there..ceramite armor, ablative, electrohull and
something else (don't have it right here) also 2 new missions cards and
most importantly the rules for battle bunkers and Razorbacks.....the
only place you can get any of this stuff

Don't have it with me, but here's the rundown:
costs 10 points, nullifies the first hit that penetrates the vehicle's
armor. May be used on ALL vehicles except bikes. Cannot be used to stop
a hit that does not use an armor penetration roll (i.e. D-cannons, Grav
Guns). It was printed, IIRC, in WD 173 or 176(It was the issue that has
the Leman Russ Datafax in it).

Personally, I'd just go for a removable skirt that you hang over the
tracks. Seems they usually get hit first anyways.

It took me *forever* to figure out what Eldar ablative armour would even
*look like*! Big clunky armour plates just wouldn't be right. Finally I
settled on sequins or small bits of plasticard layered on to resemble
dragon scales. I haven't done the modelling yet, but I think it'll look
OK...

Why not just wire up some firecrackers under it. Incredibly
realistic. Well, it could get real expensive unless you use non-GW
tanks. God forbid!

Ablative doesn't work on tracks I didn't think? Or was that reinforced?
That's reinforced. Ablative is a free penetration nullified anywhere.
Remember that if the attack doesn't have to Penetrate, it doesn't get
stopped by Ablative Armour. It won't protect against a Wraithcannon,
forex.
I also think that Ablative armour on a Chaos dreadnought won't protect
their missile rack (I forget the proper name). The missiles are
destroyed when the dreadnought takes a hull hit that is sufficient to
penetrate the Hull (and is on the hull, natch). Thus, you would take a
damage roll and loose your missiles. With ablative the hull penetration
is stopped, but the missiles are still destroyed. Any thoughts?
Obviously, this interpretation would mean that ablative armour wouldn't
stop a Dozer blade on an imperial vehicle being destroyed either.

Ever played against an IG army really maxed out on ablative-armored
tanks?
I played one 2000 point game vs an IG army wiht 7(!) tans, al equipped
with ablative armor. Great fun (once), but _not_ a thing you'd like to
face in a tourney...
Per Andersson
Yes, exactly..... I got real sick of seeing Every vehicle on the board
having Ablative armor. For 15 points, 1st hit is free, but it's 50
points for ceramite (?) and vortex detonators....

Heck, before my local group actually read the rules and found the one
about tanks not being allowed to have identical vehicle card combos,
my standard forces (averaging 4 LRs and two specialist tanks) all came
standard with Ablative and Reinforced armor. All of them.
Talk about loss of morale for your opponent when he just can't seem to
punch through those tanks...

I play IG (tho I haven't for awhile), and my tanks ALWAYS have Ablative.
Prevents that lucky lascannon shot from bagging my prized tank.
BUT, the point is that in HTH ablative doesn't matter worth a damn.

I was wodering - I haven't used Reinforced armour before. Is it
worthwhile? The +1 is nice, and the speed difference isn't too big a
deal. But is it worth it for tanks? I know dice rolling is a bell curve,
and depending on the specific dice rolled, it'll be worthless or
invaluable.
Anyone with a calculator and a couple free hours want to figure out of
its worthwhile?
Anyways, I was thinking, and I DO think I'll take reinforced armour for
my landspeeders from now on, though. After all, having an 11 AV in front
means normal troops can't penetrate...
