Instead of going with the standardized brown/lack fur, I've decided I would
like to use grey fur instead. Now someone posting here has Mister Tin's
Workshop (http://members.blueskyweb.net/mrt...@blueskyweb.net/) in their
sig, and there's a nice article on painting grey horse that will serve as
the basis of my painting. I'm still throwing around skin tones, and who
should get what. (IE slaves: should they have dark skin, reflecting a life
of hard labour; or pale skin reflecting malnourishment)
This is where I start working backwards. Instead of choosing what their main
colour of attire will be, I decided I must have bronze weapons and armour.
Everyone uses steel, and I thought bronze would be something a little
different. Stupid I know, but I kinda like it, plus special types would
then stand out by having steel weapons. Problem is I bought a bronze made
by Apple Barrel, and a bronze by Ral Partha. They look nothing alike.
Apple Barrel's is a very copper coloured bronze, while Ral Partha's is
almost gold (but very much like an old bronze flower pot and dish we have
around the house). I think I'll use the RP bronze more, as it 's a more
subdued colour. Though I can see using the AB as a base, and working up to
the RP bronze. And throw in some green washes to provide a bit of rust on
their gear (green rust curtousy of the coper in the alloy).
Then I found myself stumbling around trying to figure out 'what the hell is
going to be my contrasting colour?' My bronze colors run from a red to
almost gold, meaning (if I got it right) that my contrast colour would run
from green to blue. Figuring I would use more of the RP bronze, I thought a
blue would provide a better base, than green (beside I orefer blue over
green), and picked up Folk Art's Thunder Blue (go to www.plaidonline.com
and enter Thunder Blue to get a paint chit). I chose a dark blue because
between the grey and bronze, I believe the skaven would be rather light
coloured, something I feel is wrong for skaven. So a dark blue would help
darken them up again.
This is where I'm really unsure of my choice in colour. Is it too rich/bold
a colour for skaven, and should I have gotten a blue with more of a grey
tint in it. Am I completely off base in my choice?
With that out of the way, what colour should I think about using on their
accessories? Skaven use alot of leather and cloth wraps, and cord for
belts, what should I think about using for that? I immediately think of a
yellow/brown that might be close to the bronze I'm using.
Sadly, I couldn't think up a theme that I liked for my little guys. I kinda
liked the idea of nordic rats, bundled up against the cold, but then I
thought I'd have to sculpt little fur boots, cloaks, hats, etc for 100+
little guys and thought again.

I think pale. They're small models.

Don't be afraid to mix some iron work in there, so that
you have more of a scavenged feel to the army. Concentrate
on the aged bronze, but make 20% of the metal an aged steel.

Good thought process.

Not at all. It would look better to use three different
types of blue in your regiment, one indigo, one thunder,
and one a slightly greenish, but all dark. You have unit
cohesiveness, but you retain a bit of rag-tag with the
varied blues on each skaven. You don't really want to
go more than three colors, or mixing the drybrush highlights
between them, or it will get to be a pain in the ass.

Yes. Use two colors of brown, one dingy classic brown,
and one yellow brown.

You really don't want to do this.
RTM
I think so.

I'm cheap, I'ld just use clan rats. Though I was thinking of actually
carving them new spears. Get some lengths of doweling, maybe give it a good
soaking then throw them in the stove. Cut it to the length I want it, then
whittle the ends down to make them pointed, to make a really primative
spear.

Was talking to a friend last night, and he thought the blue/sort-a-gold
combo wouldn't be quite right. Blue/gold is often associated with good
guys, and that imagery would be transfered to them via that combination. He
suggested a grungy red/crimson colour bordering on a brown. He told me he
used that with bronze on his undead, and was quite pleased with the results.

Still better than pirates, as skaven really don't have the right shape of
head for bandanas, lol.

I had the opportunity to paint a LOT of bronze statues for a diorama a few
months ago and discovered that a great match for copper tarnish is GW Jade
Green thinned down to a wash.. I would base coat the figs Jade, give them a
heavy dry brush of GW copper and then the Jade Green wash...the came out
AWSOME..
