Hi,

I've been playing my Orc / Goblin Army for several months now, and have
got a vast amount of it painted. It's even started winning a few games
vs my wife's dwarf army. I fancy a bit of a change to painting
greenskins and fancied trying my hand at the undead.

I've been wondering what figures to buy and playing around a bit with
army builder to get an army list together. I've come up with the
following.

I wanted to be able to cast spells, (Hence the 2 necromancers) which is
something my Orcs never manage against my wife's dwarfs as she always
has 6 Dispel dice, 4+2 from Runesmiths.

I'd like any Vampire Count players to look through this and let me know
if I'm seriously lacking in any places.

Also, as my skeletons want the light armour choice - do I have to find
models with armour, or are the plastic GW models OK as far as WYSIWYG
goes for light armour?

Thanks!

I suppose this Thrall will be with a Skeleton unit. Good choice. Where
were you planning on putting the Necromancers? I'd advise against
putting them in a unit that will see combat because the last thing you
want is for them to get chopped up.

Good, solid troop choices. I'd find a way to put Champions in each
Skeleton unit. Perhaps dropping them down to 20 models each and
creating a 10 Skeleton 'bodyguard' for your Necromancers. Be sure to
protect it with the two larger units. You should then raise as many
skeletons as you can in those larger units.

I'm not so keen on most of the VC Special Troops. Personally, I'd drop
at least one of these in favor of adding another Core Troop unit or
two.

Other than that your list looks pretty solid. Nothing totally
unbalanced or out of character.

Why don't you use Google to see that I've posted around 100 messages

Tell you what, instead of searching google for my posts, why don't you

For an even greater magical punch you could switch from Von Carsteins to
Necrachs. They could throw enough spells to torment even fully loaded
dwarves. Aside from that, I don't have much input. I haven't seen the VS
played.

The plastics do have some bits of armor on them, basically just
enough to pass as light armor. If someone says differently, tell them
"Fottiti!"

Drop the Ghast, unless you just have 10 pts to throw away.

Looks good, though you didn't say what you were going to do with your
heroes. Ideally, you should put the necromancers in units that may not
make it into combat. I put mine in a smallish unit of skellie
spearman, letting him cast Invocation on the units in front. The Vamp
needs to go in the unite of regular skellies;get him into combat ASAP,
then keep replenishing his unit with more skeletons.

Also, never, never, NEVER take an undead force into battle without
dispel scrolls, unless the only opponent you'll ever play is dwarves.
Then you might be okay.

Why? The -que ending allows a regular verb to be formed without changes.

Like this:
PLONQUER - v. To plonk sb.

Why? You can buy more skeletons with those points. It's not much of a
armour save but more skeletons means if your opponent loses the combat he
must break without testing.

When you Van Helsing up skeletons do they come with light armour? Does it
matter if you put them in a group that does have light armour?

I think they rise equipped identically to the rest of the unit.

On Mon, 11 Feb 2002, you wrote (give or take a snip)

If created as a new group: No armour, Hand Weapons and Shields
If added to an existing group: Same armour and weapons as group.

IIRC.

On another note - the skelly sprue comes with 4 figures but with extra
heads and weapon arms. Are the 'coming-out-the-ground' figures that
consist of a poking out head and weapon arm count as full figures if put
on a 20mm base? If so, I can eek a few more figures out of each sprue.

That used to be the case but with the v6 limitation on undead unit sizes
you're limited by the amount of extra skellies you can buy with those saved
points. Giving them armour has a similar effect of helping to outnumber the
enemy through increased survivability of the unit.

Light armor isn't that expensive, and the +1 armor save can mean the
difference between losing a round of combat (and losing more skellies)
or winning and forcing a break test.

When you add to an existing unit, the added skellies are equipped the
same as the unit they joined. When you raise a new unit, they only
have hand weapons.
