With the global economy in the toilet, I'm sure you all have lots
more time to paint (yeah right - just like me), sadly you've doubtless
all been forced to eat your paint to survive rather than painting minis
with it. Sad...
In an unusual fit of productiveness (I'm guessing that my wife decided
since it was father's day and she didn't get me card, that instead it
was ok if I actually had some friends over and did a bunch of painting -
Woot! Go me!) I actually managed to get a bunch of basic work done.
I primered half a dozen Necromunda minis (Bounty Hunter, Pit Slaves, and
the like) as well as a Vindy Assassin mini (the pose with him standing
with one foot on a skull).
I also primered another AoBR marine squad and hit them with a base color
coat as well. (Now I'm going to have to paint up another 30 or 40 Nids
- or a single Carnifex - to even things out.)
But the biggest gain was my Jungle terrain. I've been snagging bargain
basement priced jungle tree sprues off ebay whenever I find a deal.
Well today, with the aid of a friend of mine - we blasted out 30 green
foliage sprues, 15 out 16 base/trunk sprues, and 2 more orange foliage
sprues (I've already got some orange, purple, and blue trees done up).
Some dry brushing and I'll have enought tree stands to cover 'stupid
large amounts' of the table with trees. All at a fraction of the
regular price. I just need to snag some more thin plastic sheet - I use
a scroll saw to cut out larger bases for better stability and sometimes
group 2 or 3 stands together.
We also touched up 20 plus snotlings (to go with my Grots) that we
missed a few spots on last time while we had the green loaded up.
In addition, I got a very good start on the hinges for the 7 double door
sets that I'm doing for my city fight ruined terrain. (I made the
mistake of doing a couple on my first large terrain piece and liked the
idea so much I made raised roadways. So now I've got to make more ruins
with upper story access. Doh!) Once I get the doors done, then I can
boogie through the rest of the process fairly quickly as I've already
got the foam walls cut, and all the plastic parts prepped. I just need
to create the openings for the plastic panels, and then do the detail
work (battle damage, etc) on the walls before I gesso the foam and then
spray paint it. I've already got a couple pieces waiting for the gesso
stage, I just want to do a large bunch at one time rather than dribs and
drabs here and there.
I think my next big prep and primer batch will be Orks.
So, what are you slackers up to?

Rebased all my Killa Kans to 60mm in prep for The Big Waaagh coming up
July 17. The new GW Kan boxes come with 60mm bases so I want to be
current and legal.
Nothing to do with the Kans being in coherency and spreading out 15" and
providing a 4+ cover save to the Orks behind them... nope not that at
all. ;)
Also based the Tankbustas and am getting ready to paint them. Took a box
of the new ones and then converted a bunch of the old 3rd Edition
Tankbustas and some Rokkit Boyz to look like they could go with them.
All primed and ready to paint.
That and looking at my still untouched Stompa.

Here's a thought that might help: it's alright to take units
because you like them, even though they aren't the most
effecient for their designated role. No one is going to take
away your powergamer license if you field a less effecient
counter assault unit in your IG army.

Also did a bit more work on my Vermin Lord. He usually just hangs with
the rat ogres.
So now those guys are tabletop ready next step for my skaven is about
70 troops to assemble and paint. These will just bulk up the numbers
to let me play about 3000pt. and lots will be special little minor
conversions. 30 mostly clanrats, 20 mostly ninjas (used as clanrats,
nightrunners, gutter runners or in mordhiem), 20 warlock apprentices
(used as plague monks, clanrats or characters).

Digging out the Demon hunters. This time I'll really surprise the other
side.
Can you imagine, 40 stealers each with 2 2mm x 1mm neodymium magnets
in the rear arm sockets and then another magnet for each arm, my
fingers are torn to shreads, like I've gone a couple of rounds with
the little blighters myself.
Still, I'm very happy with the results and I know that I will never
have to buy another stealer ever again. Plus with the addition of a
Broodlord and some additional upgrades that rounds out at a nice 1000
point stealer only army... Going to be giving some Marines hell with
these boys tonight!!!
One thing I did want to put to the forum is the thoughts and
experiences of dipping...
I'm all for painting and love painting almost as much as killing
dreadnoughts and wraithlords with rending claws (but not quite as
much, :-) ) and I've always been of the opinion that if you can't come
up with your own army theme, colour scheme and actually hand paint
every part of every model, then what is the point in trying?!? But
lately I've seen a lot of lovely results from dipping, especially with
3000-4000 points worth of Nids that aren't even undercoated yet...
I've been swayed to the opinion now that it is better to stick to
mainstream armies unless you are planning on being buried with your
army, after all a squad of Ultramarines that is painted just as well
as a squad of "insert typical made-up teeny sci-fi-tastic name here
(eg. Super-Nova Oreo-Marines)" is always going to fetch more interest
if you try to sell them on at a later date.
I've decided that I'm going to do away with the Leviathan Purple and
Navy Blue colour scheme that I had planned for my Nids and go with the
Kraken scheme. I really don't like the turquoise on the Behemoth
Fleet, and the White/Pink of Leviathan just looks too clean.
Does anyone have any hints for dipping, especially for those in the UK
as a lot of products mentioned in other forums are American only. Or
would I get better results from the Devlan Mud or Ogryn Flesh washes?
Keep it real people, and remember, the Emperor may be saviour to
countless millions of Mon Keigh, but surely he regularly soils
himself, it's the fella who is cleaning up that mess that deserves all
the praise... ;-)
After all that, dare I ask, but why would you field non-scything
Stealers anyway?

I'm trying hard to keep the promis I made to myself to convert every

those are one-offs/characters. I've been hanging with Seamus on our

painting helps tremendously. PS: The Gamers-Dorkness Rising, netflix

Ouchy! An all stealer army is going to be nasty - except against
a vehicle heavy army with the new rending rules. I've converted my
bigger bugs like the Tyrant and Fexes with magnets (as well as Marine
vehicles and Dreads), but I haven't had any urge to do the same with
warriors or smaller critters. The only smaller minis I've converted are
Marine special characters as the arms and torso design work well for
Sgts and special characters to have swappable magnetic arm choices.

To really get the most out of the dipping technique, one still has
to have a good base color configuration. The dipping simply aguments
what's already there, and depending on the solution, may add a nice
shean or slimy look to the bugs.

There are some who make their living painting minis, but they're
few and far between. Then again, some folks on Ebay are absolutely
nuts. I've seen a WFB special character on a mount fetch over $1,200
U.S. from a well known painter. (The buyer might as well be buried with
it - they sure aren't likely to ever make their money back on a later
sale of said mini.)

Depends on what effect you want to achieve. A lot of the products
I've seen mentioned are wood stains, which almost certainly have to be
available in some form in the UK one would think. You could always snag
some expendable models on the cheap to experiment on with your base
colors and choices of dipping solutions. (I see more than a few sets of
badly assembled or painted Nids like gants and gaunts for sale cheap on
ebay.) If you want the deep rich colors one often sees in 'dip' Nid
armys - I doubt you'll get what you want from the GW washes. I like the
GW washes. But the wood stain dips tend to leave a slightly thicker film
of transparent / translucient color that you won't likely get from the
GW washes.

RGMW FAQ: http://www.rgmw.org
Predictable enough response, but practically it's hard to see GW
making any changes which would make giving close combat-only troops
+1A anything other than an auto-pick. Stealers may get nerfed, but
then it's just even more of a waste of time sticking magnets on them -
for as long as they're viable, scything talons should be automatic.
Phil
Already happened... when they released the 5th Edition Rulebook and
nerfed Rending.
Ah, but with the result that Stealers need that extra scything talon
attack more than ever to maximise their 6s to wound - 'Stealers may
have lost out, but the scything talons only became more attractive to
people still using them (and were good enough to make a mess of my
Aspects - even with weakened rending a round with Scorpions left me
with an Aspect squad in no shape to take on anything else after it had
dispatched the 'Stealers.).
Phil
>> > After all that, dare I ask, but why would you field non-scything

I am nothing if not predictable. And who's to say that Scything will remain
+1A in the next 'Nid book? It could become +1S...
Why risk immortality like that?
That's roughly as likely as an extra close combat weapon giving +1S
instead of +1A. Scything talons have always just been a Tyrannised
visualisation of a second hand weapon, and this is a very basic core
rule of the sort that very rarely changes - in fact this particular
rule has remained essentially the same for basic close combat weapons
since Rogue Trader, and scything talons have counted for the same
bonus since they were introduced.

They look nice. The flash does wash out some of your color and
detail, but it's still obvious that they've had some fine detail work
put into them and not just the '3 color minimum' (or worse - the "I was

The colors are ok, but I have to admit that the black lining jumps
out as being less well done than the rest of the model. I'm not a real
pro at doing that with a brush either - so I cheat. I use technical
pens that come in a variety of widths and they let me get very nice
results without all the agrivation of uneven brush lines, streaks, etc.
At this rate you'll have a full army painted in weeks. DON'T DO
IT PHIL - we want you to live! (Thanks for sharing the pics.)
Myrmidon :)
Any recommendations of brands and widths for technical pens? I suck at
painting, but want to use black-lining on my Devilfish, once I buy
Devilfish...
--
Craig (I hate job-hunting in this economy)
Thanks - yes, it's a shame about the flash; the base colour's the same
shade of grey as the Wave Serpent, which shows it better. As you might
be able to see from the older Guardians in another pic (behind the
Avengers) I changed the colour scheme somewhat, going with more black
- a black rather than grey faceplate and a black backpack.

Thanks again - I'm normally a very bitty painter, but as I did these I
just wanted to keep at it until they were done, with every coat making
them look better! Nice and simple to do, actually, using the Painting
Aspect Warriors guide on the GW site as a basic template and choosing
a more 'traditional' colour scheme for the helmets and crests (also,
darker armour achieved by leaving out the second highlight stage). I'm
partway through a second squad of these guys now. I'm glad the Exarch
worked out well, too - I like my Exarchs to look special rather than
just squad leader models (harking back to the fluff).

I think part of it was the wrong choice of highlight colour - the
bluish Shadow Grey rather than the darker Codex Grey that worked well
on the Avenger shuripults. It shows more clearly in the photo than it
does to my eye in the plastic that I laid it on rather too heavily - I
cheated too and went for a heavy drybrush rather than actually tracing
each line, largely because my finest brush has turned itself into a
drybrush...

Even when I get the models done for this army (at the 1750pts I'm
aiming for), I'll still have unpainted Dragons, Hawks, Banshees, one
Ranger, Kroot, several WFB armies, most of my Epic and all of my
Mordheim stuff...

The ones I like are called 'Pigma MICRON' by Sakura Color Products
Corp. out of Japan. I use the 01 and 005 sizes to do the black lining
on my marines, and my buddy uses them to do the same on his Tau. It has
worked really well on both the firewarriors, and the battle suits that
he just finished. If you can't find that exact brand, a good office
supply / drafting supply store should have something very similar. Or
even a good craft store - perhaps a 'Michaels' craft store (which is
where I get some of the stuff for my air-brush) - might carry what you
need.

Hope that helps!
Myr :)
P.S. Glad to see you back around. Hope you'll post more often.

I've just recently taken up moderns and painted some test caesar figures as
somalians.
Black hawk down style gaming if you're wondering.
Once I do the groundwork on em I'll stick some pics up.
