2 things folks,

1: does anyone have a website showing the various types of guard,
painted? You know Mordians and Tallarns and Cadians etc, I am musing on
a small detachment of them and would like a peek.

2: With a a tactical squad of Space Marines (probably Salamnaders) is
there a blindingly obvious reason for not giving them a plasma rifle and
multimelta as there heavy weapons? The Devastators will be 4 ml's and a
lascannon/twin plasma gun in support of them.

Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,
Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgement Seat;
But there is neither East nor West,Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,
When two strong men stand face to face, though they come from the ends of the
earth!

By the time you're in mult-melta range you're probably in charge range and you
can get a decently equiped veteran sargent for the cost of the multi-melta.

Plasma-gun is obvious though.

There are plenty. Check eBay, Dr. Fausts, GW, etc. Any time an IG army is
painted up, you'll be able to see something.

Ordinary Tac SM can't take Multi-Melta. Multi-Melta is better on a
LandSpeeder, due to the ability to move-and-fire. Heck, even loading it on a
move-and-fire Dread or Attack Bike is a better mount than a a move-or-fire
trooper.

For a stand-and-shoot tac squad, the standard is lascannon + plasma
rifle. For salamanders it's not as clear, since they get multimelta
instead of lascannon. The lascannon is far superior as a tac squad
weapon. Higher strength, much longer range. The sole advantage of
the multimelta is its extra d6 penetration against vehicles within
12". And how is a move-or-fire tac squad going to get off a shot at a
vehicle within 12"?

However, since you can't take a lascannon, a multimelta may be a
reasonable option. I wouldn't use it unless the squad is in a rhino,
though. Otherwise you'll have a hard time getting in range at all.
Unless you're expecting to face opponents with 2+ saves (tyranids, SM
with terminators), a missile launcher is probably a better choice, and
ML + plasma isn't bad at all.

For salamander tac squads, though, you have some interesting options
besides stand-and-shoot. 2 flamers or meltagun + flamer give them
better mobile firepower than tac squads of other chapters... too bad
they don't have the assault ability to match.

Multimeltas are only really good for killing vehicles. You may want something
else to take out light troops or large tyranids.

Well, flamers pretty much kick ass.

multimeltas are excellent for killing tyranids.
I don't like move-or-fire short range weapons
in general, but on mobile platforms, there are
few weapons that compare to the noble MM.

But salamanders can, and i always did, i used to have like a special assault
force in a rhinothat i used to take out vehicles and stuff, it was pretty
effective.

Now that I think about it, Salamanders without flamers just sound funny.

The range is too small for my likely, regardless. That is what attack bikes and
landspeeders are for. I much prefer a lascannon, missile launcher, or plasma
cannon.
