I'm just getting started with Warhammer 40k. I've started painting and with
about a dozen figures under my belt I'd like to throw some questions out
here on a few things I'd like to improve on.

First of all, I'm using the Game Workshop Citadel paint with pretty decent
brushes from the craft store. I mostly just thin with water and I haven't
tried inks yet.

What I seem to be able to do well:
- Dry brushing metal, guns, swords, etc. Always comes out looking cool.
- Armor. Any vibrant color drybrushed over black looks pretty cool. Darker
colors (deep reds and purples) generally don't show up too well.

What I seem to suck at:
- Emblems. Like the eagle on the chest of the space marines or applying
paint to a skull emblem or eye sockets. Generally just looks like a glob of
paint or the paint doesn't cover enough of the black undercoat.
- Flesh. I've tried a few things. Painting base with tanned flesh color
then washing with very thin black. Adding a white/flesh color highlight at
the end. Mostly looks like dirty flesh when I'm done. How do I get cool
looking clean flesh like the nicely shaded flesh in this pic:
http://www.agisn.de/assets/images/autogen/a_SoBgroup_sm.jpg
- Hair. Black hair comes out pretty good with just a little grey dryburshed
highlights. Blonde I've tried yellow base coat with tan/brown dry brush
with white/tan highlights. Comes out looking pretty crappy. And I haven't
tried any other colo hair yet. Any tips.

Thanks for your help.

FWIW, the correct tag here is [Paint], as added.

Have you read my writeup on RGMW.org? It's a reasonable starting place.

OK, so far.

Too much dependance upon drybrusing, par for the GW style. Basecoat first in a
slightly darker shade, and you'll get much better results.

Basecoat in a slightly darker shade, then drybrush/highlight. Or wash with
very thin, dark paint to pick up the detailing. Or both.

Personally, I basecoat eagles in grey, wash in thin black, drybrush highlight
in white. I undercoat skulls in brown, basecoat in bone, wash in thin brown,
drybrush highlight in bone, then white.

Too dark of a wash. Use a medium brown. Or GW "flesh" wash.

OK, that's *totally* different proposition. I'll take a guess: undercoat dark
flesh, flesh wash, progressive thinning layering of dark flesh, medium flesh,
light flesh, pale flesh, (ultra-fine) white.

Sorry. I don't do hair very well. Usually, I'll do black hair as basecoat
navy, heavy black wash, dark brown andd grey highlights.

I don't have any blondes in my armies.

I do plan to work on my redheads, tho, for my Banshees.

If painting white eagles on black armor, heres what I do. First, I
paint the eagle grey. then I drybrush white. Then, a little black
ink to get the shading good, then touch up the drybrushing. Comes out
quite well.

I've had good results using the following method for blond hair: basecoat
Bubonic Brown; drybrush Bleached Bone. If you want to brighten it up a
little bit, spot highlight with white.

Commiserations, better luck on next choice of game.

Don't paint straight onto black undercoat unless you want dark and dingy.
Damp brush white first.
Google will have a definition of damp brushing and my site describes the
technique a bit more.
It's called pre-shading if you want to search more modelling posts and
newsgroups.

Dark flesh first, then paint in brown/red brown lo-lights then pale flesh
hi-lights.
You want to apply the lo-lights as a thin layering effect.
I mix johnsons klear ( acrylic floor varnish ) with water and old GW (cote
d'arms now ) flesh ink.
Apply thinly into the creases etc.
You could give leather brown acrylic paint a twirl as it's much the same.
Ink is easier to work with to get a subtle effect though.

Can't make the teeny picture out.

Have you ever seen anyone actually had yellow hair?
Sand, not yellow.
Wash over with the flesh ink mix as above.
Highlight with fawn + white + sand mix dry brushed on sparingly.
