[40K / WFB] Other sources...

I've run across several good sources for extras to go with 40K and
WFB gaming and I thought I'd post a few links and reviews...
The first would be Basement Battle Scenery
I've got one of their 'Ruins Set C' which I just finished painting up
and I am very pleased with the results. The casting quality is decent,
but not as sharp or as detailed as some I've seen. There are a few
small details with bubbles in them, but nothing so awful that it
detracts from the overall appearance of the piece. I like the set I got
for the fact that I like the composition / layout and appearance of the
pieces. The ruins have big thick blocks (like I picture imperial
construction typically being) and bases are large enough that rubble and
bitz are scattered about with room left over for a bit of static grass
'weeds' as well without making the piece look crowded. The pieces took
paint well with only a simple one shot primer coat put down first. I
think they'll look great scattered among my ruined buildings on the
table top.
The next would be Irondog Studios
I like this site both for the cool conversions and tutorials, and for
the nifty resin goodies. I picked up a set of the 'Scrap Gunz' for use
as Grotzookas with my Killa Kanz. They look great! The casting had
only a few tiny bubbles (I've gotten worse castings from Forgeworld) and
the detail level was good and very crisp. I felt like I got my money's
worth with the set I purchased. (Now I just have to get all 3 Kanz
painted so I can start abusing my opponents on the table top.)
If nothing else, check out the 'Mek Shop' section - the 'Tater Titan' is
superb and well worth a look by itself. (This guy has some killer Ork
Trukk conversions up too.)

These folks do various senic resin bases. Sure, I know, there are a
lot of places out there now designing various types of resin senic bases
for GW minis. So why would I recommend these folks? Well, I happened
to pick up 25 of their 25mm round "Diamond Plate Deck" bases as well as
10 of there 40mm bases inexpensively. And I was pleasantly surprised at
the quality when they arrived.
One of my personal dislikes for some of the base sets I've seen is that
there were only a very small number of different designs and lots of
duplicates. With the 25mm set - there were 20 unique designs, there
were 2 identical of one base, and 3 of another. In short, there were 22
distinct designs out of a set of 25 bases which I like greatly. Sure,
some of the pieces are very similar, but the fact that the makers took
the time to make that many different types definitely appeals to me. As
for the 40mm bases, no two of the 10 I got were identical. Sweet! I'm
going to have to pick up a few of their 60mm bases too.
The quality of the casting and detail level are excellent, and there was
minimal flash or bubbles on any of the parts I recieved. Add in that I
think their prices are fantastic compared to a lot of others, and my
recommendation of their stuff only increases. They have 4 different
styles or lines of bases so hopefully they have something to suit most
tastes.

Making miniature scenery is simple and inexpensive.
Only outstanding commercial efforts get a second glance.
That said, even purest badassery has to seem cost-effective.

I find splash page part 1 (interlocking terrain) mystifying.
It's a cool concept - if the 'terrain' is more than 1/2in tall.
2&3 explain - in detail - how it's easier to make terrain yourself.

It's something that I'd like, and the price seems right.
Pity it's sold out . . .

Oh, yeah! This bad boy was detailed on another forum.

Meh. ATV balloon tires don't seem very Orky to me.

Or they were so overdone, there's no room for a model's feet!

I'm disappointed that unpainted specimens aren't shown.
Are all those details cast-in? Down to the grass?
Or are they pre-painted/ flocked? Hard to tell.
* "Descent into the Depths" = 5 sets of five 25mm rounds.
Think Dungeon/ Mordheim/ Medieval "flagstone" type bases.
Marble/ granite and sandstone/ slate textures represented.
High point: Only one base includes skulls . . .
* "Diamond Plate": Just what you'd think. 5 sets of five 25mm rounds.
Also, 2 sets of five 40mm and 2 different 60mm (no 50mm?) rounds.
High point: A few have a raised side for those "bent knee" poses.
* "Highland Crag": Unfortunately, falls into my "overdone" category.
Think bases covered with largish chunks of cast-in slate.
(Adventures in pinning many may not want to endure.)
High point: Set 5 has room to glue a mini on all five of its bases.
* "Waterworks": 25mm "Descent" bases with smaller flags and ...
water.
The sewer motif is represented with pipes and half-pipes along an
edge.
The drain grilles and puddle depressions are exactly what you'd
expect.
High point: Full sets of twenty-five 25mms are just US$12.50.
This is, in fact, the price for ALL of the four variant 25mms.
Other than the Highlands, this looks to be a very good value.

Imo, there's considerably more than $9.50 difference in labor alone.

Nice to see you linked to the site of the original designer for these, and
not the knock-offs that have turned up on another store. The knock-offs are
almost exact duplicates, although of slightly inferior detail but obviously
taken from IronDog's sketches, and even named them the same as his designs.

I'm not an Ork player myself, but if I was I'd be tempted to get some of
those scrap guns and a few other bits.
