Any tips on painting power weapons to make them look like there's actually
electricity on the blade? I'd rather not end up with a blade that looks
like a) block of ice, b) stick of candy, c) molten metal..

I've taken to using thinned down sky blue ink and painting over chainmail. Not
the greatest effect, but it sort of suggests energy emanating from the blade
which is the key thing.

I'm considering using iridescent paints, so when you move them they shimmer
in the light (think inside of an oyster shell).

Personally, I paint chainmail, highlight silver, and then wash with blue ink.
By convention, in my armies, blue is for power weapons, red is for force
weapons.

Alternately, if you need a flashier effect, after washing, get a brush with
white paint, and swirl and streak it on, to give a bit of "lighting" texture to
the thing.

two ideas.

first, paint the blade blue, then drybrush white till it fades into the
blue. thats to make it look like its covered in energy.

or

paint the blade blue, then the sharp edge white, and do a little fading into
the blue. not as much as the above step, just a little. then, take white
and make lightning archs from the white.

Many years ago I tried to do a power sword that didn't have a blade at
all, just a blade-shaped energy field.

1) remove the sword.
2) cut a piece of wire to a bit shorter than the length of the sword and
glue it into the sword hilt. This is the 'filament' for the power field.
3) get some contact* and cut it to shape. You'll need to bits, one for
each side, so that the wire is covered on both sides.
4) ink the contact to your preferred colour.

It ended up looking godawful but that is because I am a terrible modeler.
Someone with talent could make it look really good.

Brad

* Contact is a brand of clear plastic, sticky on one side, usually used
for covering school books. Like glad wrap only thicker and not as much
of a pain in the neck to use.
