Where can I get a good set of paints that are cheaper than GW paint.
(Thats mega paint set from GW is hard to find and very expensive) I'm
preferably looking for a big paint set with a large number of colors
and inks/washes.

What type of paints do the people of RGMW suggest?

Thanks,
James

I suggest you tell us what country you are in. Whether mail order or money
itself is a problem. Whether you have art, craft, or model shops in easy
distance.

I'm in the United States. Mail Order isn't a problem.. money is
somewhat of an issue in that I'd rather go with the best bang for the
buck. I'm thinking of going with the Mega Paint set from GW but I'd
like to see if there is anything out there that is cheaper before I
shell out the cash. As far as I know, I don't think there are many
arts/craft/model shops around my area.

Thanks,
James

Firstly I wouldn't advise you to buy the GW Mega paint Set.

If you are starting from new then I'd suggest Coat d'arms or Vallejo from
somewhere like Brookhurst Hobbies http://www.brookhursthobbies.com/ or Neil at
the Warstore http://www.thewarstore.net/. People here can vouch for both of
those retailers. In the time I've been reading the RGM* hierarchy I've seen no
bad reports of these paints.

Personally I like Ral Partha paints and they've just started remaking them. You
can get them direct from http://www.ironwindmetals.com/. A couple of people
here don't like them but I'd be lost without them. There doesn't seem to have
all the old range available yet.

If you can find one you should consider examining paint and ink from Windsor and
Newton. Not everyone finds it easy to use art acrylics as they're paste rather
than liquid but there's a beautiful range of colours. The Windsor and Newton
inks are definitely the way to go.

Look for Michaels in your yellowpages. The Leadership 10 website has
some good tips on what paints to buy from craftstores, the link is:
http://www.leadership10.com/misc/painting/sly/sly.htm

Another option is to get Coat d'Arms paints from Brookhurst Hobbies:
http://www.brookhursthobbies.com/ (under Hobby Supplies).
These paints are the same quality as Citadel, but they come in better
containers and larger volume (IIRC). Brookhurst has also got other
paint brands that are good.

Whatever you do, stay away from the Mega Paint set unless you can get
it at a really good discount. The paint pots are the worst and you get
very little for your money.

Forgot to say there's also Reaper paints
http://www.reapermini.com/propaints/index.php. I've never used them so I can't
tell you what they're like.

Craft paints, from Michael's.

Worst bang for the buck, least paint for the buck, worst containers ever made.

Lord of the Rings paint set. For a beginning painter, this is probably
adequate.

Michaels and Hobbytown USA are major chains with a web locator.

If you're just looking for a decent look, and trying to paint on the cheap
I'd recommend using Dream-coat or apple Barrel paints. They're about 80
cents for a nice 2oz jar with a decent lid. I mix all my own washes from
those colors. Just don't use their metallics, spring for Reaper metals.

Don't buy the big GW paint set, their paints are WAY over-priced.

If you don't want to think and just want a box of paints, get vallejo
( re-badged as andrea in the states sometimes ).
You can order these off a site in Spain and likely ave money over a US
dealer if you're not in a hurry.

Liquitex paints are excellent art paints, their yellows (eg) are a
dream compared to GW's.

Any old artist acrylic inks are usually good to excellent.
Not forgetting winsor newton water soluble.
Mix with a little water and johnsons kleer acrylic floor varnish (
household product ).

If Ral Partha are again available, get their skin tones range.

For a lot of painting purposes the cheap art shop paints I get such as
inscribe or andrea's acrlyics ( not the same as US Andrea ) are OK.

For undercoat, buy humbrol white enamel.
or
Non-ferrous undercoat for garage doors etc from a house paints shop.
or
Spray on acrylic car undercoat
