Hello,
I am looking at picking up a bunch of Renegade Legion items.
A few questions.
1. Is the game any good? Including the different components
(ie: Interceptor etc.)
2. Is the RPG aspects of the game better than Traveller 2300
or New Era.

Any help would be appreciated as I know little of this
system.
Thanks,
Paul

From what I have played of it, Leviathan is the overall best capship space
game I
have played. Not as complicated as Star Fleet Battles, not as simple as
Battlefleet Gothic. Damn shame the whole system died... it was a cool
game..

All three of the primary RL games are excellent in my view.
Leviathan is one of if not the best specific spaceship combat game out
there (Full Thrust is the best generic one). Centurion and
Interceptor are both exceptional games on their own. And crossover
between the 3 is very good. The only trouble it runs into is the
crossover of the 'Escort' class of starships (which is indicated as
existing, but details on it are not given in either Leviathan or
Interceptor...oopse!).

I would say that the RL RPG is on par with Traveller 2300
although I've not seen New Era to make a judgement there.

Well, did you play "Crimson Skies"? Think of the damage system from
that, with wider firing arcs and terrain issues, and you've basically
got "Centurion". "Interceptor" is like CS, but with inertia-free
movement.

So basically, if you liked Crimson Skies you'll like the Renegade
Legion games.

All of the board games are great. The background is more Star Wars than
2300AD though. The RPG itself, while an interesting system designed by a
well-known writer was not the best of the bunch of products though.

Interceptor is one of the games that I've played more than any other
game. Centurion I've played a bit, but not because it wasn't any good. I
played Leviathan once and if I remember correctly there seemed to be
some issues that my group had with it but it was in no way a bad game.

The miniatures created by CinC were the best space fighters created by a
miniature company for gaming purposes - ever. We haven't seen their like
since. Same goes for the tanks for Centurion. I'd love to see those back
in production.

I agree on all counts. My buddies and I used to play Leviathan until we'd
pass out. Great game, cool cardboard ships. Centurion and Interceptor are
good as well.

Thanks for all of the input. Why did these games die out anyway?

Well that answer is disgustingly simple. FASA, the owners of
RL, also own Battletech. When they saw that these two games would
compete for sales, they chose to keep big robots and toss out the more
diverse universe of RL.

The Star Wars reference is fitting since IIRC, the RL line of products
began as FASA's proposal for the Star Wars license before the license
was awarded to West End Games. They liked the mechanics and the games
well enought to give it its own universe. Other than Centurion, all of
the other RL products closely parallel the Star Wars movies and universe
if you think about it. (Renegades = Rebels, fighter combat with huge
capital ships, etc.)

Yeah, and the notably lower sales of RL products had nothing at all to
do with it, I'm sure...

Absolutely not! Lower sales figures were just a coverup!
Yes....yes that's it....
Well it did hold true that the giant robots were selling more
than the grav tanks and 1 kilometer plus starships, but THAT just
proves the somewhat silly nature of human beings methinks.

As far as I know, you can still get the RL fighters and grav tanks from
C-n-C. However, according to The Miniatures Page, they have temporarily
stopped production to reorganize/remold/re-something. You might check
TMP and see if they have any info.

Really? I had no idea. I'll just shoot RAFM an e-mail about it.
