It's probably out of print but you might want to locate Ben Green's
"The Color of Horses" which contains a series of beautiful color plates
by Darol (sic) Dickinson. These show the same grey horse, at yearly
intervals, turning white over seven years as well as the range from
light bay to dark/true bay. The grey plates were so good I used to be
able to tell the age of a young grey just by remembering the plates.
The plates might still be available in print as a separate book.
Then there's always going to an open horse show with your camera and
take pictures of the entrants.
One caveat, watch out for using a particular breed as your guide.
Some conformation breeds like quarter horses exclude animals on the
basis of things like white marking above the knees, their so-called
"high white" rule. So this might be confusing.
I used to own horses for over 17 years and tried to make a special
study of their coloring over that time, so please let me know if you
have any questions.

has an excellent section on painting horses. The whole book is a super
