I have been trying to get my head around the rules by Ian Dickie
and Gareth Harding, I think they are called Wargames Rules for the
Mid-Eighteenth Century and have come to the conclusion that they
are not very good. My main problem is that I cannot understand
the artillery rules, you are told to throw one dice per gun but
having read the rules three times from cover to cover you are not
told what the dice throw is for. Anyway I have given up with these
and would like to know what GOOD rules are out there (I am a DBA/M
player trying to get into C18th). I prefer rules which use elements
rather than single figures and I do not like armies of more than a
couple of hundred miniatures. If anyone finds a Ruleset meeting
these criteria I will be a happy man...probably...

In my opinion, "Final Argument of Kings" by Dean West does the best job of
mixing the right elements of playability and realistic detail. These rules
are available by direct mail from the author or from any number of good
mail order shops, such as Attaxtic in Denver.

If anyone has questions about Koenig Krieg, email: OUT...@ERINET.COM. I
enjoy these, since they allow for fairly short games with a reasonably
historical result.

Rob,

OK, here's my 2 cents (US) worth. The best set I've found on the 7YW is the
original version of Avalon Hills Napoleon's Battles, which was actually
titled The Battles of Frederick the Great. NB was originally designed as a
set of 7YW rules, but evidently AH did not believe that period of history
would sell well so demanded a rewrite for the age of Napoleon. Now, as many
folks on this Newsgroup know, I got some REAL history related problems with
NB, but I've played the original 7YW version and it is TOP NOTCH in every
respect. The scale of around 1:100 or so would seem to fit your bill as
well. Don't know how you can get a copy, but maybe you could write the
author (Bob Coggins) through AH, or . . . .

There is also an Australian group that independently wrote a 7YW varient
for NB, not knowing any of the above. You have to have NB to start, but the
packet I have is a very fine piece of work and seems to follow closely what
I remember from the Coggins' draft of the original NB-7YW concept. It comes
with rules modifications, new charts (they rate 98 French generals - wow -
for example)and LOTS of scenarios (9 to be exact). A POC for this module is
one:

Highly recommend both and hope this helps.

There seems to be a proliferation of good 7YW rules out now. They include
1. A Final Argument of Kings-Johnny Reb for 7YW
2. Shako-7YW variant
3. Piquet-unlike anything you've ever played. No two games are alike.
4. Age of Reason-Perhaps the most accessible game at battalion level.
5. Volley & Bayonet- Divison level game. You are Alte Fritz.
6. Koenig Kreig- the oldest ruleset whose 3 edition was recently released.
A classic written by Barry Gray.

In my opinion, ALL of the above give a GOOD game.

I've just got a copy of the rules currently being playtested by
Guernsey Foundry. They look very interesting, using a card based order
system, and a unified attack sequence. This is very similar to a
system used in our club rules a few years ago as it includes
approaching, shooting and morale in a single action.

Greg has sent the files to me so you can download them from the Horse and

Any suggestions as to where one can obtain this new Koenig Krieg 3rd
Edition. I've played 2nd Edition but found the command system breaks down
for any battle larger than a few brigades. Recently bought a copy of Final
Argument - they look interesting - anyone played them?

If you like NB then you will like these rules. Greg Savvinos has done an
excellent job! Actually they look like they will work better than NB.
Again they are brigade scale but players can easily play any of the 9
scenarios without 1000+ figures.

I will be running Koenig Krieg Games at Cold Wars, SYWA Con, Historicon,
Origins and many other shows. Stop by and I will gladly let you try the
rules. One can have a great game with only a few brigades a side. Quite
often I play these games at cons with 25mm SYW figures... and am looking
forward to Ghengis Con in Denver, where I will be running a game with the
new Guernsey Figures... boy are they sharp! I got them at Historicon for
a good sale price.

I must admit that this has not been my experience. I've always found KK
to be good at commanding large numbers of units. What is leading to the
problem of command system break down?

Kind regards

Brendan
