Hello,

my wife, who is reading the book Eragon right now, has just discovered
on the author's website, an interactive fiction game based on the book.

You can find it there : http://www.alagaesia.com/game/

I don't think I've heard of it before.

And it is indeed in Inform, running under zplet:

>version
Eragon
Eragon.
Release 1 / Serial number 050712 / Inform 6.30 Library 6/11 SD
Interpreter 6 Version J / Library serial number 040227

Hey, that's pretty neat! Always good to see IF getting some
more-mainstream respect. A pity, admittedly, that they don't give
Inform clearer props than the version message and reference to "open
source software," though. Still, this is the kind of public-eye
placement of IF that we need (and can achieve) to let people know it
still exists and still has merits and can be fun. (And given the
literate audience most likely to visit the Eragon site, I think the
audience it's reaching is a viable one that would show interest...) Now
if only we could get a placement like this with a link BACK to RAIF or
a guide site...

I gave this a quick look. It seemed like someone had put a fair amount
of effort into it, yet the writing was not as good as I would have
expected, and the game didn't hold my interest past a few moves. Could
be I'm just tired of dwarves and fantasy tropes in general.

Cool that someone's using Inform like this, though.

Actually, after playing the game for some minutes, I encountered a
maze.... That's not exactly letting people now IF evolved since Zork 1.
I appreciate the effort, but I wish they would have come up with
something better.

the maze is not terribly difficult. After passing it, I had to get some
fungus, but I didn't manage to touch them. Do some people have any hints ?

(I must admit I used 'tree' and 'gonear' and some other debugging
features a few times to get hints. :)

I'm not sure where exactly you are stuck.

Are you in the room called "The North Wall"?

Do you know which fungus you need to take?

Have you seen it?

The cube tastes like sugar. You are suddenly surrounded by a herd
of moose. They start talking to you about a moose-load of things.

oh, they forgot to compile it without the debugging tools !

yes, I'm stuck there. I know which one to take and I've seen it.

In fact I've washed my hands in the pool but it's not enough and I'm
probably missing something for covering my hands or taking the fungus (I
have only the old tunic)

You need something to put it into. Who might have something? Once you've
got a container, you just have to type 'get fungus', nothing fancy like
'get fungus with xyz'.

I hate the way they dumbed down the default error messages so you can't
see whether it doesn't understand the verb or the noun. I agree with
Stephen Bond about the quality. If it hadn't been for the debugging
verbs, I'd probably got stuck pretty soon and wouldn't have bothered
playing on.

ok, many thanks for the hints.

It's true the game is basically very classic, but they didn't even
follow some classical rules of design.
But nevertheless I like the mood of this game, and it's already much so
I enjoy this game anyway :)

Just for fun, here are some hints ... the parser has some "guess the verb"
problems, by the way.

The game is very short - about 60 turns long.
