So, Yahoo is closing Geocities in about 30 days from now, and I have
to move my skimpy little website elsewhere. But I've been so out of
touch with this kind of stuff since, oh, 1995 or so, that I don't know
where to go. Most of what I have there is things like the Inform 7
Programmer's Manual, and other such long mostly-text pages.
Anyone have suggestions for a new home?

You can try Google Site:

It's free, until they too decide maybe "to focus on helping our
customers explore and build relationships online in other ways".

There's also nearlyfreespeech.net. It's pretty cheap, pay as you go,
good for personal sites without a lot of bandwith needs.
http://www.000webhost.com/
Is the one I used until I switched to their paid service (
http://www.hosting24.com/ ) so I could own my own domain. 000webhost
is free and if you check the site, you'll see they offer a bit more
freedom than others do.
This isn't what you asked for, but it might be what you need --
You can put text pages up on a blog. And blogs give quite a bit of
space, compared to Geocities back when I was on it.
WordPress gives 2 gig of space, which you'll probably find ample.
I put a book online a little while back (in the public domain, vaguely
related to IF via plot-related puzzles):

There's also an automagic system of interlinking pages, which I kind
of like, and a stats feature.
I also have a Google Sites page, and for what it's worth, I think
blogging is a better, more flexible and more visible way of putting
something on the internet.
Conrad.
I've been happy with izfree.com. They don't require ads or anything, but
you're limited to two or three hundred megabytes of space.
Hey guys, thanks for all the recommendations. I'll be poking into all
of them likely this weekend.
