Around a decade ago, work was done on converting some of the games written
on Cambridge University's Phoenix mainframe during the 1980s to Z-code.
Myself, Adam Atkinson and Richard Bos have been working on getting more of
these conversions completed and tested. We've now got working versions of
Avon, BrandX, Hamil, Murdac and Spycatcher, as well as updates to the
previously released games Acheton, Crobe, Fyleet and Sangraal.

The Z-code files are here:
http://ifarchive.org/indexes/if-archiveXphoenixXgamesXzcode.html

These can also been played on-line through Parchment: see the appropriate
IFDB entry for each game at http://ifdb.tads.org/, which also contains more
information on each game.

Anyone thinking they want to try one might want to start with Acheton
for the historical interest, what with it being the first Phoenix game
(but should bear in mind that it is huge and difficult), Crobe or
Sangraal for something relatively gentle, or Avon for something with
bits of Shakespeare in it.

BrandX may be better known to many people as Philosopher's Quest. From
what I read, it's quite hard.

Of the others in the list above, Hamil and Murdac are small and not
too hard, and Fyleet is medium in both size and difficulty. I don't
know Spycatcher at all.
