The Games Magazine "Electronic Games 100" for this year includes the
Masterpieces of Infocom CD. Yay!

The third sentence of the review (out of three sentences :-) : "Activision
has added six new text games, the winners of a design contest; though not
quite up to the lofty standards set by the geniuses at Infocom, they're
challenging and very enjoyable."

I now have a goal: getting our GUA CD in the '97 Games 100. Hot damn.

Geez, what a kunkel! I would say that the three or four worst games on
that disk are Infocom's, not the contest winners. It's sweet to think
that they would want six Deadlines and AMFVs, though.

So, for those of us who save our money for World of Puzzles, what were
the first two sentences? :-)

Let's hope that there IS a '97 Games 100....

Matthew Daly I don't buy everything I read ... I haven't
da...@ppd.kodak.com even read everything I've bought.

My opinions are not necessarily those of my employer, of course.

This is really great news. Note that the reviewers have clearly played
the games in question, a rarity for anyone who has read certain other
reviewers' opinions (what was the guy's name?).

Anyway, I'm psyched. I'm almost prepared to launch myself on a wave of
Avalon-caliber speculation, and look forward to the wider audience.

Bill Kunkel, I think. For a while, "kunkel" was being used on
r.a.i-f as a swear word. I still think it makes a good one.

"Kunkel!" you yell as you miss the nail and land straight on your little

In fact, I seem to remember someone posting a *very* short TADS game in
which you send the Kunkel to an otherworldly place.

Deja News turned up this delightful nugget from June. Credit goes
to Greg Ewing. I only wish that the Cardinal had enough room in his
sig for the whole thing! :-)

-----------------

Around the table is a handsome set of concrete park benches.
Sitting on one of the benches is a kunkel, eyeing his
surroundings with barely-concealed contempt.

On the table is a wet spaghetti noodle.

> EXAMINE BENCH

"Examine bench? Examine bench?" he scoffs. "If this game
had decent graphics you wouldn't have to type 'examine
bench' -- you'd just be able to *look* at the darn thing!"

> TAKE BENCH

They're too heavy, especially the one with the kunkel
sitting on it.

"Examine bench. Take bench. Don't you ever get sick of
all those two-word commands? If we *have* to have text
input, let's get a decent parser in here, pul-leeze!"

> TAKE THE NOODLE, WRAP IT AROUND THE KUNKEL'S NECK, AND
SLOWLY TIGHTEN IT AROUND HIS EXCESSIVELY VITRIOLIC
WINDPIPE UNTIL HE TURNS BLUE AND BEGS FOR MERCY

Taken.

Done.

With bulging eyes, the kunkel vainly tries to pry the
noodle loose with increasinly ineffectual fingers.
Eventually he sinks to the floor and expires.

[Your score just went up by 5000 points]

Oh, I guess there is the code sample that you talk about too. Don't
know how to import something so long, but it's called Re: IF Compiler

"It's been a while since text adventures made news. This package, a must
for anyone who likes good stories and challenging puzzles, collects all
30 of the text adventures produced by Infocom (now an adventure game
brand name for Activision), including [game names]"
