You should be punished instead playing NetHack at Xmas...:-)
What about the players birthday? Implement an option BIRTHDAY=xx.xx Y/N.
If enabled and you play on your birthday, somewhere in the dungeon
(not too far down) a special room is created (you know, for the party...).
If you find it and enter, you're granted a wish...if you pass that
level without finding the room, it's gone.

But then we're catering to North American holidays and the like.

Oh, that's silly. If you want to exclude things on the basis that someone
MIGHT use it to cheat with, we should definately get rid of the "recover"

could always set the clock to corrospond with the date of a full moon, but
what good would that be?
I like the birthday idea. Throw in some other holidays, too, so we can
see it (without cheating) more than once per year. :)
Fourth of July parties (fireworks! Wands of fire that, when fired in the
party room, do no damage), Christmas (presents!), New Years (lots of potions
of booze!), Thanksgiving (food, food, food!), Easter (easter egg hunt

Nethack is fun because of all the neat little features. More neat little
features would be a GOOD thing. If some people use it to cheat, that's
THEIR problem.

in all seriousness, though, even though these ideas are all pretty
neat, the potential for abuse is high. dates can be easily changed
on computers (well, UNIX machines are tough if you're not the
sysadmin...). although the potential for abuse already exists,
i.e. by changing the date to one when there is a full moon (extra
luck!), and changing the time to a day time (avoid those nasty
gremlins), it's relatively minor abuse. with the birthday thing,
you'd basically be guaranteeing another wish each game.

Actually, I agree it would lead to too much abuse. Anyone
familiar with nethack probably doesn't need to cheat to enjoy the
game, and newbies who do cheat aren't really becoming familiar
with nethack.
A possible solution: Set "BIRTHDAY" to the release date of that
particular version. (Of course, it may have to go into the FAQ,
I can see it now: "How come in version 3.x the birthday was
March 29th and in version 3.y the birthday is June 2?" :)
>option. And the moon phase thing. If I always wanted to start out lucky, I
>could always set the clock to corrospond with the date of a full moon, but
>what good would that be?
Actually, on my home computer I don't bother loading in the clock
when I play nethack, so it reads the date from the last file
written to disk. Since I keep nethack on it's own disks, usually
there isn't much change in the date.
Yes, I have started out lucky for a week straight. Then I
thought about it and added 2 weeks to my date. I tend to become
attached to my characters so much less that way. :)
Besides, with the luckstone at the bottom of the mines now, it
usually isn't too critical what the moon's phase is, as opposed
to 3.0 when it was occasionally quite difficult to find that
wonderful luckstone. (I seemed to find loadstones quite often,
but I think that was just bad luck.)

Well, one has to take care not to make it an entry point to abuse... A nice
touch would be to make it completely useless, so the players will not be
tempted to cheat. Like you enter a dark room, suddenly the light goes on
and you are surrounded by friendly humans (elves if you are an elf) - plus
you get some fruit, candy bars and a potion of booze or two :-) Attacking
any of the humans should also make them all disappear (so you can't loot
their corpses, should you be REALLY evil :-)

You don't really need the Gauss algorithm, as nethack knows the phase of moon
already. Knowing that it's easy to find easter. I have however another
problem with that: nethack has it's own deities and mythology (different
for every class as well) - so why should it use catholic holidays? Would
be much nicer to use the ones from appropriate mythology, except they may
be difficult to reconstruct. Oh well, at least for the knight you can do that
- and don't forget to punish him for eating meat on fridays :-)

I _love_ these holiday suggestions. There's already similar code for
Full/New Moons and for the Witching Hour with undead, but putting in
separate Birthday Rooms would be a wee bit o' work. Many of the others
would be cake; just tweak the probabilities of various things appearing,
and put an occasional cute message in.
I agree that cheating is possible with things like the Birthday code.
On multiuser systems, you should have to register your birthday the
first time you play and be unable to change it. On single-user systems,
the player can already cheat like hell, so who cares?
>But then we're catering to North American holidays and the like.
>Hmm... one could have lots of fun with all the holidays available
>out there. =)
Time to pull out the Simple Machines Working Holiday Singles and look
for some obscure holidays. There could be a Fireworks Day in the code,
and an environment variable that would make it occur on varying days
depending on location -- Fourth of July in the US, Guy Fawkes Day [sic?]
in England, Cinco de Mayo (or New Year's Day, also?) in Mexico, etc.
Similarly, Thanksgiving would occur on differnet days in the US and Canada.

To abuse or not to abuse, that's...oh, well. As someone mentioned:
it's fairly easy to stop this kind of abuse on a multi-user system;
and on your PC at home, well, there are already a zillion ways to cheat,
so who cares? And that additional wish should make no great difference.
But I like your idea, too. Just don't make it completely useless. Let's

the motivation is that i just ascended a rogue, but found not 1
potion of unholy water. i also found no cursed scrolls of gold
detection, a necessity in my eyes for the elemental planes. i only
had a blessed magic marker, and had no wishes left (except wishing
in my own mind that i could find some damn way to curse the scrolls
of gold detection i had :), so had no way of writing the thing (i
detest polypiling in general, so didn't want to pile all those tools
in hopes of getting a cursed, or at least uncursed, magic marker).
my solution was to drop everything but my armor, my weapon, and the
scrolls, and wait for the wiz to appear. he double-troubled, and
eventually i got my cursed scrolls, but in the mean-time everything
else i had was cursed also. this was easily remedied with a blessed
scroll of remove curse (for the armor & weapon), but it was sort
of a pain killing the 2 wiz's. anyway, it just seems that there is
some sort of imbalance in the blessing/cursing. it's relatively
easy to bless things, while quite hard to curse them. just my
$.02.
btw, i've always thought it was a bit silly that you can do some
things with cursed items which don't cause them to stick to your
hands, e.g. throwing cursed weapons, or applying cursed tools
(magic marker, key, ...).

In other words while on a certain level the monster is tame towards
the player and will do as the player commands (as long as it's not to
committ suicide or somesuch) as long as the player is on the same
level.
Then after a certain number of turns while the player is off level the
summoned monster will become wild and could attack the player.
Associated with this the player would have a better chance of use a
Tame monster spell on such a monster when returning to the level.
Also...the player could not summon another Human type character or any
of the quest nemsis/demons (ie: Jubilex).
What do ya thing....
And on that note...how about adding the Swords from the Book of
Swords.
One cut rock (Stonecutter)
One had luck (Coinspinner)
One defeated all other weapons (Shieldbreaker)
One healed (Woundhealer)
One defended (Townsaver)
One returned what ever attack was sent upon it (Doomgiver)
One hypnotized (Mindsword)
One zapped will (Soulsword)
One found the correct path (Wayfinder)
One was a sword of vengeance (Farslayer)
Could be directed against any one person/monster/god
One was displacement/stealth/disguise almost polymorph (Sightblinder)
One was special against dragons (Dragonslicer)
Twelve Swords in all.
For S&G's let's say that Farslayer could only be used once.
Coinspinner has the ability to teleport out of your possesion..AT ANY TIME
Townsaver could only be used in a room with both peaceful/non-peaceful
characters
Shieldbreaker would have no effect against unarmed monsters/people
possibility of disintegrating monsters/persons armour and weapons
Sightblinder could only be used by a Rogue/Thief.
Woundhealer could have only a certain number of charges.
Wayfinder could have the searching intrinsic..but have a greater
possiblilty of working better when risk of harm/traps is higher.
Well...that's all I can think of right now...
What's the general concensus...?

Hmmm.. maybe a blessed scroll of create monster could be modified to do that?
Wouldn't need a whole new scroll. The create monster scrolls now seem to now
and then produce peaceful monsters, it might be more logical for a blessed
scroll to create pets and uncursed and cursed ones to create enemies.
(BTW, I just HATE peaceful monsters! They are useless and always on the way,

Well a couple of months ago, the general consensus was to
NOT start adding more weapons to the game. We've already got
a lot of them, and many people would favor a game which didn't
go any further in the direction of hack and slay. In fact,
as it is, many experienced players think that the game already
gets boring beating on the deeper monsters with the weapons
we already have. Adding new instruments of carnage would only
mean yet-another-thing-to-hack-the-Wiz with.
On the contrary, since the spread of 3.1, I've seen many
posts that even suggest Decreasing the Artifact weapons in the
game. After all, if not everyone can get a named weapon
without a wish, your spellcasters might actually be forced
to (gasp) cast spells!
I think the biggest draw of Nethack is all the neato side things
that you have. Scrolls, potions, wands, altars, spells, pets,
quests, etc. Many of these serve to prevent the game from
being a huge exercise in hack-and-slay. Blindly adding every
weapon from every fiction ever written (let alone 12 swords
from a single source) would tend to defeat this trend.
IMHO, of course.

I'd like to see more weapons, but keep the same overall chance of getting a
named weapon. More variety, not more instruments of carnage.

I think there should be a Codpiece of Manly Vigor. It would add
one + to AC and also increase (decrease, if -'d) Con and Cha.
It would be an armor item and could be enchanted with SoEA.
Valkyries would not be able to use this item, or else would
suffer a special decrease in Cha and Dex if they tried.

I didn't mean to imply that a sack is useful against Medusa. As far as I
know, all you can do is carry stuff in it. My point was that that's a LONG
way to go without any sort of sack and it was very annoying. More than once
I couldn't carry stuff because all my slots were full.
