Most likely you are referring to Crossfire, a multi-user Nethack-type
game played on Unix machines on a network.
It is both better than and not as good as Nethack.
Better: Color graphics, REAL graphics (puts CHRHAC to shame), tougher
monsters with more abilities, better spells, nifty "trick" areas where
you have to plan out moves and lever pushes.
Not as good: no cool "tricks." Cannot create magical items, no
wishing, some monsters are so tough you just bash forever and it gets
boring.
I _really_ like Crossfire, and the multi-user aspect is loads of fun.
Any Nethack fan would love Crossfire. It isn't better, it isn't
worse, but it is loads of fun.

WHERE TO PLAY: Find your nearest UNIX network. Get friendly with the
SysOp. Have him download Crossfire and install it. Get a group of
friends togther when the network is not being used for "real" purposes
and have fun.
We run Crossfire on a Sparc10 and it run very well. Since many
(probably most) people with internet access are doing so via a
university connection, I suggest poking around the various departments
to find out which ones are UNIX based, and go from there.
To be real honest, if you are not near a university, I don't see how
you could play Crossfire in multi-user mode easily...

Check the FAQ posting in rec.games.roguelike.announce; it has
an entry about crossfire and also lists rec.games.roguelike.misc
as the appropriate newsgroup for discussion about that game.
can you run it off of one machine with a whole lot of terminals?
how's it set up? server/client? or should I just go RTFM?

First of all, it's run under Xwindows. So if you don't have an X-terminal,
you can't play it. You can probably ftp it from some local server, if you
can't find it, mail me, and I'll give you the address (I don't have it right
now, but I could find it)

One machine "runs" the game, and is one player can use that machine.
All other players use their own stations. I recommend color; it
REALLY makes a difference.
To give you an example of the cool graphics, let's say you have a
mage. Your character looks like this cool little mage dude, and his
aspect changes according to which direction you are looking. When you
cast FIREBALL, a _ball_ of fire goes sailing along until it hits
something, and then the explosion gets progressively bigger and then
smaller; flames erupting everywhere, stuff on the ground erupting with
little mushroom shaped clouds. It is great.
Crossfire is still undergoing major work. The most recent version is
not really usable because there are no maps for it; Crossfire has
literally HUNDREDS of dungeons and places to visit. We play the
"older" version, which still has bugs. One of these is that the game
crashes once every two hours or so. Hope you saved that character...
;)
As to where to get it, I don't know. My SysOp friend found it. I
suggest using ARCHIE to locate it.
I have no access to X-terminals to run Crossfire... so...
Are there any Muds out there that run games in a similar format to Hack or
Rogue? Also where is there a good ftp site for info on the games.
Thanks!

Try MYTH, not certain if it is available anywhere anymore. I played an
early version of it some years ago. It is something like a multi
player nethack, runs on any terminal that can run nethack.
Don't ask me where I got the code from back then.

You may get it from iesd.auc.dk (anonymous ftp) in the
directory /pub/myth.
