What are the possible places of a portal to Fort Ludios (knox)?

I looked at the source... A level below 10, above the medusa level,
having a vault and not another level branch. BUT, I've looked at every
level below 10 (up to 22, the medusa level), broke into every vault (not
so hard in Wizard mode) (on levels above 10 too) and no portal!

Hmm... Does the portal not appear in every game?

The ^O in Wizard mode displays Fort Ludios as 19 and knox also as 19.
And a 'floating branch' to Fort Ludios.

So, where is the portal?

Don't know this offhand; you sound like you're searching in the right
neighborhood.

Ding! Yes, the Fort (and its portal) are not guaranteed to appear in
every game.

You feel a spolier near you, swat it? [ynq]

It shrieks and falls to the floor. Splat.

They say the portal to the Fort is in a vault somewhere.

No. Actually the game generates the Ludios portal in a following way:
- generate level.
- if the level has a vault, and it has no other portals, is not a special
level and is in main dungeon below level 10 but above medusa, and the
Ludios portal has not been generated yet then
- generate Ludios portal with 1/3 probability.

So it is quite difficult to compute the probability of having a Ludios
portal in your game - you need the probability of getting a vault on a
level fulfiling all the cryteria above... I would estimate that an average
game has about 3-4 levels fulfiling the cryteria. That would mean about
20-30% probability of NOT having the portal.

It has not been generated. Otherwise you'd get a level number attached to your
'floating branch'.

I think your estimate is much too pessimistic. The game generates a
lot of vaults; many of them just don't have entry portals via closet traps.

Well, I'm far from questioning the word of Dev. Team member ;-) - but I don't
thing so. The Medusa is on average somewhere on lev. 22. This gives 11
levels where the portal could be. Take one for quest portal level, another
one for rogue/big level (at least one of them seems to appear in every game)
- you are left with 9. From my experience it seems that a vault is generated
with ~50% probability on a normal level - OK, I can agree that 3 is pessimistic,
but 4 is probably realistic ;-)

I once had my portal to the quest on the big-room level....

Has anyone ever seen a maze in which a trap and ladder lie on the same spot ?
I almost went nuts looking for that ladder. I wonder if that can also
happen to staircases.

Interesting.. and I have once or twice found the quest protal on the rogue
level. And somebody assumed it can't be on a special level..

Quest portal maybe (never seen myself, through). Ludios portal no.

I had the portal on the big-room level while playing a Samurai...
