MY KINDA TURFF* TOURNAMENT (* aka _BADUK_, _WEI CHI_ OR _GO_).

Ima kind of grouchy this morning 'cause as of yesterday afternoon the
powers that be somewhere upstream between City Hall, the White House
or Tel Aviv have again cut off my on-line access. As a resident in a
housing project, I have depended for many moons on a free wireless
system run by San Francisco's Department of Technology. Usually it
works, albeit in a manner far inferior to DSL. I have just left voice-
mail for the guy what finally fixed the problem last time around,
which was about a month back. Fortunately a) I can still compose on
WordPad and maybe later this morning I will be able to use my thumb
drive to post this article from a remote venue. So as to meet my self-
imposed goal of getting up the message before our big "3J" tournament
opens tomorrow morning at the Chinatown/Financial District Hilton, I
will have to write the whole thing out of my own haid, as it were, w/o
any further on-line research or fact-checking. And b) I have a wee bit
of material already stashed away in Alpha below to help sail me
through the first of the four parts of this modest proposal for the
celebration of our game.

Part the First:

APM [see Glossary] 4 years ago in Alpha, our first measure will be to
restore the natural drama of a tournament by reverting to the "sudden
death" rule aka "single elimination" or "knock-out". This ancient,
logical & transparent method builds tension successively throughout
each stage of the competition and yields an indisputably worthy
champion.

The present "Swiss-MacMahon System" OTOH can and sometimes does award
the first prize to a player who has been defeated by another
competitor with the same win/loss record. For tie-breaking SMS
routinely resorts to such measures as "Sum of Opponents' Scores" and
even "Sum of Defeated Opponents' Scores". If Aphrodite be a knock-out,
SMS be the proverbial lipsticked pig. 'Tis something like choosing
whether to use a majority of the popular vote or the Electoral
College.

Using single-elimination, a 5-round tournament such as our present one
reduces an opening field of 32. Under this low limit we would,
therefore, have successive bands of 32, starting with the Open
Division, then the Dans, then the Kyu's usw. For future purposes, the
reader will note that a 7-round tournament, such as the San Francisco
Go Club used to run in our glory days in the old J-town temple under
Shinji Dote, successfully squeezes out a field of 128.

Please see Alpha for the details. [Since Joogle has been repeated
refusing to post, I will try to append Alpha as a follow-up.]

Part the Second:

The Jesuit-run University of San Francisco should adopt the San
Francisco Go Club. The SFGC has been rather an orphan ever since June
of 1995 when the murderously corrupt, C.I.A.-linked Mayor Frank Jordan
criminally abused his 3 Stooges Fire Department instantly to expell us
w/o warning from our grand old temple at Bush (!) & Laguna Streets
which we had then occupied for 62 years. The drab rat Jordan was
evidently motivated by an article which I had posted a few days
earlier from my own private account urging the students at S.F. State
University to present Hillary with a hangman's noose dedicated to her
hubby for his war crimes against Iraq. Hillary had been invited to
give the Commencement Address there. At the time I was the treasurer,
the teacher of beginners and the resident night watchman for the Club,
so Jordan's dirty coup deprived me of both my home and my office,
besides gravely wounding one of the City’s most important
institutions. Only six weeks previously HenKi's _Sayeret Matkal_ had
blown up the Federal kindergarten in Oklahoma City, thus magically
reviving both Clinton's presidency and the C.I.A. Billary was on a
roll that Spring. In his novel LET US PREY! (available in paperback),
published the previous Fall, the Yali commando Bill Branon had already
predicted this sequence. Rather similar to the artistic predictions of
the WTC Stunt by the brilliant film LONG KISS GOODNIGHT [1996] and by
John Grisham in his novel THE BRETHREN [2000]. Fortunately again, the
voters dumped Jordan in the next election in favor of Willie Brown,
for whom I energetically campaigned on the Usenet.

The two main reasons I myself first came here in the pre-Internet age
of 1978 were the then world-famous Club and also MUNI, which meant
that one could live more-or-less comfortably without maintaining a
private automobile. After hitch-hiking my way up from from San Diego,
with a tournament stop-over in Los Angeles, I was met at the door of
the Club by master Shinji Dote and that was the first place I sat down
in this town. But back to biz...

In our present store-front, market rent-paying location at Anza & 8th
Avenue, the Club sits in the shadow of USF up on the Hill. USF has
declared big ambitions for itself as an intellectual focus for the
Pacific Rim; it has established a dedicated center for that purpose.
For USF to absorb the Club = an elementary strategic move for reasons
of both genuine cultural depth and also of prestige in the Three Home
Countries aka "THC", as well as with the rapidly developing
international community of "barbarian" (my word) formal strategists.
We of the Club would be relieved from a crushing rent burden and, with
a little luck, have access to very handy audio-visual equipment for
lectures & classes. This the simple, obvious move for both parties. We
even have as a convenient intermediary a USF law professor.

Part the Third: Before going further, let us touch briefly on the
question of the name of the game in English. Because of the laudable
initiative of the Nihon Ki-in in promoting the game worldwide since
about 1980, we barbarians have generally been calling it by its
Japanese name. When the Japanese themselves, however, adopted the game
from the Chinese and from the Koreans into their own culture,
centuries before, they rejected the two already existing names and
chose instead a new one in their own tongue.

Insofar as English is provisionally acting as the world language, we
can safely say that both of the latter two countries have some
resistance to using the Japanese name. This attitude is illustrated by
the very name of our tournament tomorrow "Goe", an Ing variation.
Furthermore, of course, "go" is already an important, basic English
word completely different in meaning from its Japanese homophone.
Hence confusion.

Should a powerful new English-speaking patron of the game emerge,
therefore, such a party would have the option of promoting a name more
suitable to our own language. I have recommended the word "turff". The
extra "f" would provide a unique identifier. "Turf" both as noun and
as verb is commonly used in English in a sense very closely related to
the meaning of the game as the competitive process of converting
abstract space into personal territory. Although several alternative
choices do exist, such as "space, rodeo and matrix", I myself
recommend "turff" to the reader's attention.

Although it is severable from the other three, it seems to me that
this point of nomenclature deserves mention here.

Part the Fourth: Due to unique world circumstances, however, there
also exists a far grander opportunity, should the Jesuits, all the way
up to and including the "Black Pope", dare to take advantage thereof.

At present the top tournament prize money in our game remains under
half a million dollars in any individual case as far as I recall
offhand. The Kisei Title in Japan, traditionally sponsored by a
leading newspaper, the top newer Korean tournaments and the Taiwan-
based quadrennial Ing tournament all hover around that mark.

Should they be bold enough firmly to grasp the baton, the Jesuits have
a fighting chance to quadruple the top world prize money in a globally
revolutionary fashion. They can put themselves in a position to offer,
with profit to themselves, $1.1 million for first place in the Open
Division and $ 0.9 million for first place on the "B" (for barbarian)
list.

All by itself the first part of that innovation would astound and
deeply impress observers in the THC. Bear in mind that these masters
have for many centuries been the esoteric intellectual guardians of
the civil, military, commercial & religious rulers of North Asia. The
first of the four marks of the fabled Mandarin of China was skill in
this game. The three founders of modern Japan were players whose first
act of power was to establish their teacher as Earth's first
professional in the game. At the moment I forbear further to develop
this theme of cultural weight because the material therein be too rich
for any short article. By thus holding aloft the golden wand, USF
would be able to jump from nonentity status to world primacy in this
most ancient & fundamental art, which is emerging as the World
Language. This stature BTW would give the USF authority to promote the
adoption of the "turff" name in English. They would completely
dominate the field and, with a little tact, could easily befriend the
existing figures in the USA.

The "B list" aspect has to do with promoting the spread of the game
from the traditional cultures of the THC to the rest of our Race,
Seven Billion strong. So far the diaspora of oriental masters in the
barbarian world has very much dominated competition in tournaments in
both Hemispheres. So as to encourage the diffusion of the art beyond
the hereditary oriental breeds, we should recognize and encourage
masters emerging from nations which are new to the game. Hence the "B
List" for prizes, which should have precisely the intended effect. A
sort of cosmopolitan "Affirmative Action", if you will. Of course the
first year in which a barbarian champion cleanly wins the Open
Division might be the last in which such a compensatory measure would
still be appropriate but such an eventuality seems to be a good ways
off yet.

A couple of years ago, I read up a bit on both the chief of USF [let's
call him "J2"] and the Black Pope aka "BP" himself. [Note that in
French "BP" stands for "good game". Pro tem we will disregard the
pejorative corporate meaning.] In both cases it turned out that a
large part of their earlier careers had been spent in THC, mainly
Japan. Thus two of the key players are in favorable personal positions
to understand the necessary background of this discussion.

But from whence are the Jebbies to gather the prize moola of which I
speak? From C.I.A. Bush the First of the Carlyle Group, that's from
whom! In order for the proposed collection to proceed, BP will first
have to negotiate the neutrality of Pope Benedict in this matter,
perhaps the touchiest part of the whole maneuver. Yet our case rather
different from controversies such as "liberation theology". Here we
are dealing with the completely documented, premeditated, cold-blooded
murders of the beautiful 15 year-old maiden, Celina Ramos, of her
honorable mother the cook and of the six Jesuit professors of the
Central American University, headed by their brave & learned rector,
Ignacio Ellacuria SJ. B1, the intellectual author of this crime,
according to all standards of criminal law, also went out of his way
after the dastardly act to show his approval of his local puppet
Alfredo Cristiani, by embracing him for photos in the White House.

First J2 goes to BP in Rome to discuss the undertaking. BP agrees and
then succeeds in his representations to Pope B. Now we're over the
hump. Presumably 'twould be beneath the dignity of BP to visit B1 ITF.
But Jesuits have famously penetrated in their missions to even the
most desolate places on our Planet, so J2 visits B1 at his home in
River Oaks (Houston). There will be AC.

Now for J2's rap to B1: "We Jesuits have a good deal for you, Mr.Bush,
an excellent offer at a modest price. We know how you Texans like your
slogan "Think Big!" but we're proposing to slide this one through for
only $130,000,000 [one hundred and thiry million dollars]. That's 20
Big Ones for each of the two women you slew on this particular
occasion and 15 for each of our six Jesuits.

Bearing in mind that the highest price a U.S. court has set on one
human life = ~$27,000,000,000 [twenty-seven billion dollars] in a
tobacco suit, we can easily see that cases of foreigners murdered in
their own homelands would naturally command a higher value. Let us
then make the very modest hypothetical adjustment up to $50 billion
each. With 8 victims in the present instance, that would be a total
amount of some $400 billion.

The national total of victims murdered by the Reagan-Bush
manifestation of the USGov in El Salvador alone was ~80,000. In
Guatemala ~250,000. In Iraq ~2,000,000 [two million] just up to the
time you left office, Mr.Bush, at the end of your first term. We see
that your true financial liability, let alone the more important
criminal side, comes to an incomprehensibly large number in economic
terms.

So we understand that you may despise us as pikers for asking that you
raise only the comparatively tiny amount we first mentioned as a
donation to the Turff Trust of USF. But we are here today, Mr.Bush, to
deal with you on a practical level rather than on a cosmic one.

BTW I can Skype us in for a video conference with BP in Rome, if you
like. Otherwise I’ll ping him so he can go off stand-by.

Do you agree to our so small request, then you will be signaling an
orderly, responsible transfer of power from the old imperial regime of
mass murder to, to use your own notorious phrase, "a new world order"
or we should rather say, "the first world order" based on justice
under world law. And, furthermore and in particular, you will be
establishing a monumentally important institution at our flagship
University in California and your name will be duly recorded in the
rolls. We are confident that with the sum given we will be able to
endow the tournament described for at least 20 years and, moreover, to
reach out to the Central American University and to other parties in
that area to promote both the game and other cultural benefits as well
in memory of Celina Ramos and of her fellow victims. We could even
develop a project in the Cape Flats.

Before you decide on our proposal, Mr.Bush, you may wish to consider
also our Plan B. Should you turn us down, then you would thereby force
us to face the fact that in addition to committing the murders, you
are obstinately determined to rejoice in them. We would then have the
obligation to do our collective best utterly to destroy you in the
following way. We would diffuse throughout our many colleges,
universities, seminaries, high schools, churches and other points of
influence throughout the world the full, gruesome details of these
killings and of the vast number of others which we have mentioned. We
would encourage our students to sing the "Ballad of the Cook's
Daughter", written in 1989, which specifically recommends hanging you
for your crimes. (J2 is carrying his laptop.) BTW I have here a
private video recording of Charlotte Church singing this ballad, if
you would like to hear it. She’s really quite good, you know.

You are familiar with the concept of "spin". You now have the choice
between spinning out of control down into eternal obloquy and disaster
for your descendants or else of trying to come to terms with your dark
past in an orderly manner. We are here to offer you our help with the
latter and only honorable alternative. Indeed we are very far from
offering you a "cover-up" for your crimes, even do you decide whole-
heartedly to cooperate with us. The people of Earth do have deep
hearts for those wicked who in good time choose to repent of their
atrocities. Do you like, we can introduce you to a select number of
war criminals who subsequently became genuine American heroes
precisely because they found the wisdom and courage to come over to
the side of humanity. These men are nearly your same age and have been
sources of strength for all of us.

Thank you for your time."

Exit J2.

The discourse above be "too much like right"? Should it all work out,
_mirabile dictum_, I would propose that the USF TT style the annual
event as the “Dote Turff Tournament”.

Subject: Model "_Go_" Tournament ? (1.0)

MODEL TOURNAMENT*? (1.0)

....I take this occasion to present for the reader's gracious
consideration a possible reform of our "_go_" tournaments. Perhaps the
reason that Tennis Players are evidently smarter than us lies in all
those hours that they spend scampering about out in the sunshine and
fresh air?

I refer to the simple, transparent and dramatic way that TP's organize
their competitions. Can anyone imagine the winner of the Australian
Open being decided by the computerized convolutions of the "Swiss-
McMahon" system? They might as well leave the decision to the
Electoral College. Of course the tennis champions use the logical
knock-out aka "single-elimination" procedure for clean kills and clear
winners. So should we too, right, brain-children?

Enter the Slough Pond remedy: Obviously we weaker players of
our ancient game of surrounding would dislike to travel considerable
distances and pay likewise considerable entry fees and then, after
only one round, half of us find ourselves out in the cold with zilch-0
to do, only thumbs to twiddle without rocks to throw. The solution to
this dilemma which will at least IMHO serve us better than the Swiss-
McMahon smoke & mirrors = In the second and succeeding rounds, the
Tournament Director will simply arrange official match games among the
losers, the results of which will be duly reported to the American Go
Association (or other national authority). Perhaps a computer program
would come in handy for these consolation pairings? Then we get the
best of both worlds, eh what?

Actually I further propose that in the very last round of play
the
default option for the great mass of losers will change from Slough
Pond games to spectator status, so that all may watch the championship
match as it takes place. As a practical matter,
this might involve an official secretary boardside with a laptop
relaying the moves to an assistant placing the stones on a large
demonstration board, thus allowing a better view for the general
audience and more respectful treatment of the prime pair of sole
surviving contenders than a crude vulturine huddle over their
shoulders.

~Five additional touches:

Opening ceremony: First, print several duplicate copies of the
pairings for the convenience of the players, rather than only one.
Then, before posting them, announce to the audience that they are
requested to wait for a further signal from the Tournament Director
before beginning play. When the T.D. sees that all players have been
seated, he (let's say) will ask, "Is Board 128 (or whatever the last
board number may be) ready?" Receiving an affirmative answer by the
raised hand of the player there holding the white stones, the T.D.
will repeat the question to the First Board. On likewise seeing the
appropriately raised hand, either the T.D. or his assistant will cause
to strike together two Tibetan temple bells. When the last
lingering chime in the air has died away, the First Board player
holding black will place the first stone of the tournament. Then the
T.D. will cause to be sounded loudly a wooden clapper as the signal
for general play to begin. All this innovation to be explained
beforehand.

In a six-round tournament such as the Oza, the top 64 games
will all be even.

Tricolor Status Flags: On a sufficiently tall pole during
fallow moments of the event beginning at the first scheduled minute of
registration, the T.D. will cause to be displayed a simple Yellow
pennant; resuming during lunch and other breaks and after the last
move of the championship game and being finally struck as the last
official moment of the tournament after the awards ceremony. A Red
pennant will signify that pairings have been posted. The Green pennant
will be raised after the sounding of the wooden clapper, showing that
the round is in progress, with the customary courtesies applying.

Speaking of which, we come to the Boss Mama: When it occurs
that small children, especially small boy children, are in
supernumerary attendance, then the T.D. will judiciously beforehand
invite one of the observing women to take the title of Boss Mama for
the event. In lieu of a diamond tiara, perhaps the simplest
costume for the position would be a clean green tennis-style headband?
Boss Mama will have the responsibility for preventing the rambunctious
offspring from disturbing the players. In one of my recent games,
after the fourth or fifth swallow-like appearance boardside of a
lively ~10 year-old ostentatiously examining my clock, I felt like
asking my opponent, "Is he yours or did you hire him just for the
tournament?" In the course of things, Boss Mama might in turn ask the
T.D. for help providing an appropriate childrens' play area outside
the main tournament hall. The tournament might compensate Boss Mama
with a free entry pass for the adult player of her choice.

(Ethics notice of personal interest = I am an S.O.B. or "Silly Old
Bachelor" aka curmudgeon.)

An additional courtesy would be providing a space with some
boards outside the main hall wherein players can review and discuss
their finished games without bothering the official games still
underway.

Awards ceremony: The T.D. will have announced from the
beginning that all players and their families are warmly invited to
join a group professionals, the tournament champion with high placers
and the T.D. with Boss Mama and assistants will occupy the center of
the scene, with the others attending arranged around them. Proper
execution of this essential documentation will require a
professionally skilled photographer prepared ahead of time. The
Website to which the photo will instantaneously be posted should be
known to all. Then, presumably, everyone who wishes will be able to
copy the photo for their own collections, both on-line and on the
wall. In view of the
existing skewed gender ratio in our game, the T.D. should take extra
care to ensure that all the women attending are warmly encouraged to
take prominent places forward for the shoot. We all know that, thanks
to Mark Okada of the SFGC the original creator of the Internet Go
Server and others, the Internet has emerged as the now dominant
replacement for traditional FTF play. The downside of this amazing
technical progress = the drag on the development of traditional clubs.
Publication on the Net of group photos of players who manifestly have
enjoyed competing against each other in the flesh therefore has a
particularly timely function of attraction for future such gatherings
and other traditional club activities. Millions of solitary man-hours
before keyboards create a market opportunity for inspired old-
fashioned human get-togethers.

Clap control: In our region it has long been customary for the
M.C. to award prizes for many places, sixteen such handovers being a
fairly small number. The theatrical value of the awards ceremony may
be enhanced by giving some thought to how many rounds of applause are
most suitable and so guiding the audience. ("Will you please hold your
applause until...?") BTW cash prizes should be given only in the Open
Division. For lower ranking prizes, to the extent practicable, all
trophies & books should be clearly marked with the name & date of the
tournament & the rank of the prize. Such mementos will have meaning
for their winners for many years.

Evidently Tsukino Usagi posted by mistake to this thread a remark he
had drafted as a kitchen memo for his own family which by typo omitted
the word "my"? Does he fear his kids getting into his rock stash, then
he should take more effective means to secure it, eh what?

Speaking of TU's tastes in veggie products, years ago already I have
elsewhere introduced the highly desirable proposal that Nelson Mandela
should smoke a wee bit of crack in a public ceremony so as
dramatically to give the lie to the narcs. Maybe in the near future we
will work a little bit more on marshaling the forces to approach
Madiba with this notion. Obviously we would want to go through Bishop
Tutu. At an earlier stage we might have in mind also the Afrikaner
novelist Deon Meyer.

FODAD = "Freedom Of Diet And Dress".

At present , some capacity for systematic thought may be required to
appreciate this slogan. Very soon, however, we should be able to take
fuller advantage of the Bandwagon
Effect ("BE"). Let it ....
