David Ambrell, a paleontologist, while removing some
unusual fossils from the surrounding rock discovered
a medallion embedded in the rock, as if the fossilized
dinosaur had been wearing it in life. When he touched
it the medallion turned to dust, releasing a torrent of shadowy
shapes that whispered with a cacophony of ages past.
Some of the shadows faded away. Some fled, chittering
as they slipped from sight. Some of the shadows
penetrated David, merging with his soul,
speaking to him of a time gone past imagining and
an ancient war that Earth almost lost.
There was an epic struggle in this time before recorded
time. On one side, creatures from beyond time and space,
cthonian horrors antithical to life as we know it, life-destroying
creatures of maws and tentacles and pain. On the other side,
creatures evolved by the living energy of the Earth itself as
its guardians.
The defenders of life won, barely, and at great cost. Some
of the destroyers lingered on as mad spirits of evil, locked
in a struggle with heroic spirits of life. When the amulet
disintigrated the spirits were released into the world again.
Many of the spirits faded, too weak to persist any longer
in this time so far past their existence. A few of the
spirits of evil fled into the world, looking for hosts through
which they could reawaken their power and hunger.
The most powerful spirits of life merged together with
each other and asked David for his aid. He agreed,
and the spirits melded with his living soul, passing their
powers on to him so he could use these powers to
safeguard the living Earth.
With a thought, David can transform into creatures
from a time long ago - dinosaur-like, but almost
dragonish, not exactly like any dinosaurs known to
modern science. His near-limitless collection of forms
can soar through the air, swim the depths of the ocean,
tower above foes, even sport armored hides sufficient
to turn bullets. There is something surreal about his
forms, almost spirit-like, and when he speaks while in
these forms the voice seems to echo from far away.
The game mechanic from Hero System is a Multipower
with a large enough pool (so far) to use two powers at
a time, out of a list that currently includes Running,
Swimming, Flight, Growth, Armor and Hand Killing Attack.
He's got Life Support: Breathe Underwater outside the pool
linked to him using the Swimming power, and all the
powers in the Multipower are built with zero endurance
so he can keep at using them even though his human
physique isn't monstrously super-human. David has
some Psych Lims approprate to a newly-minted (but
not fanatical) defender of the Living Earth, and some
built-in Hunteds (the escaped spirits of destruction,
who are also built-in nemesis supervillian origin
story instigators).
I was thinking of a name that brought forth ideas
of time far before human imaginings. Antediluvian.
Primordial. Primal. They don't seem quite right,
though. Anyone want to contribute some suggestions?
Since he's for a semi-Silver Age campaign, I
might just get stuck calling him DinoMan. ;-)

ManaSaur?
SauroMan? (though that sounds like a Jackie Chan pronunciation of
Soloman...)
AnteLogos ?
Genius Logos ?
GeniuSaurus?
GeniusOros (the spirit of gold? has a kinda nice ring to it though)
SeraphaSaurus ? (OK, that one has an odd ring to it)
ManaLoa - for that island feeling
Leaping Legion of Lizard Critters! (for all your light hearted banter
needs)

That would be perfect...except that another member of the hero
team he'll probably join up with is named Doctor Mythago, kind
of a cross between Indiana Jones and Merlin. ;-)
Aeon, David Johnston's suggestion (thanks Dave!) has a lot of
potential...
That's one of the problems of being a fan of comic books
and superhero RPG's for over a quarter century now - I've
seen so much that I have a hell of a time coming up with
a character name I haven't already seen somewhere.

The Saurus
(Say it real fast...)

Aeon sounds good, (assuming you never heard of Rankin/Bass...;) )
Personally I think names that have never headlined their own comic
book are up for grabs. It's not like Marvel and DC don't each have
their own character named Rampage...
Fair enough, and I certainly use such names - it just
doesn't feel as wonderful as when I think I have a name
that wasn't already used somewhere.
