RATIONALE: rec.games.frp.industry
There currently exists a great deal of discussion, in the
rec.games.frp.* hierarchy, the alt.games.* hierarchy, and elsewhere,
of issues which impact the RPG industry as a whole, and which relate
to the actions by and situations of the various specific companies
which make up that industry. Many times, these actions, situations,
and discussions have only tangential impact on the various games
themselves, and as such could be considered off-topic in the groups
which discuss certain games and gameplay.
Currently, this industry/company discussion is *technically* only
on-topic in rec.games.frp.misc (since all other charters mention
discussion of *games* as being on-topic), but current practice is to
ignore that and discuss matters relating to a company (but not
necessarily its games) in the group that discusses the company's
game(s); often, this discussion is also cross-posted to
rec.games.frp.misc.
A considerable number of readers of the groups in question have
expressed the sentiment that they are not interested in such
discussion, and only read the groups for the gaming discussion.
However, such industry discusiion is not explicitly off-topic in the
charters of the gaming groups and is clearly of interest to a good
number of people. Therefore, creating a new venue for this discussion
seems to be in the best interest of all parties.
CHARTER: rec.games.frp.industry
rec.games.frp.industry is for discussions relating to the role-playing
game industry, as well as the specific companies that make up that
industry.
Topics appropriate for discussion include, but are not limited to:
* The history of the industry and the companies that make it up.
* The state of the industry and the companies that make it up.
* The future of the industry and the companies that make it up.
* The state of various companies' relations with their customers.
* The apparent "production values" of specific companies and the
industry as a whole, including the prices, layout, artwork, etc.
* Specific companies' "codes of ethics" and other self-censoring,
as well as industry-wide ratings systems.
* Accusations by the media or "interest groups" of a link between
RPGs and cults or criminal actions, and how companies and the
industry respond to said accusations.
* How international copyright, trademark, and patent laws can impact
the RPG industry and its customers.
* Various companies' on-line policies, especially regarding the above
concerns of copyright and fan-created materials.
* Other "shop talk" by company representatives & interested customers.
The above topics will be off-topic in the rest of the rec.games.frp.*
hierarchy; cross-posting should be used for redirection purposes and
should be kept to a minimum.
Topics which are deemed inappropriate include:
* Non-industry/non-company-related discussion, or game-related
discussion which belongs in r.g.f.misc or in a more appropriate
rec.games.frp.* newsgroup.
* Announcements of web sites, which belong in rec.games.frp.announce.
Discussions of an RPG company's web pages' layout & content, though,
are still be on-topic.
* Posts which would be off-topic in *any* of the rec.games.frp.*
newsgroups, including most binaries and encoded texts, spams, scams,
Make Money Fast, Good Times Virus, general advertisements, computer
game or MUD related posts, general advertisements, and the like.
This charter will be enforced through cooperation, mutual respect,
and peer pressure when necessary. Anyone who willfully persists in
violating the newsgroup's charter will in all likelihood eventually be
asked, by the newsgroup's regular participants, to stop posting. If
further sanctions are necessary, they will be discussed with the
offender personally, with the offender's postmaster or ISP, and then
in news.admin.net-abuse.misc if it comes to that.
END CHARTER.

Well, nice timing on this one, huh? Welcome to
rec.games.frp.WOTC_and-TSR.talk.
Nah. It won't exist for another week or so, by which time the
conversation will have gotten firmly entrenched here, so it won't
do us a darn bit of good...
