Overall - I like the changes made in the 4th ed but Martial Arts is the
bread and butter of my main campaign. Any hope an updated version will be
seen very soon?

Given that much of the stuff from Martial Arts has been imported into
the core rules, is an updated version necessary?

That depends on whether or not a given GM is bright enough to use the new
rules to design appropriate styles.

Would "appropriate" styles be much different from the ones we have in
the already present book?

I don't think it is so much the GM being bright enough but having enough
information to design appropriate styles.

Compare the original GURPS 3e anime version of Mouse
<http://www.interlog.com/~gggard/mousse.html> done without Martial Arts
with my version <http://robkelk.ottawa-anime.org/rpgs/mousse.html> which
was done with Martial Arts.

The old version was incomplete in terms of martial skills and scattered
what martial skills there were scattered all over the place. Martial Arts
allowed me to choose what 'real' style best fitted this style.

No. Current best guess is late 2005 or early 2006, but that may change.

Note that GURPS Martial Arts is not planned as just the
karate/jiujitsu/tae kwon do rules for Fourth Edition; it will be to the
combat system what GURPS Powers is to the advantage rules -- basically a
toolkit for making things even more flexible.
