I think Blue Troll's site has a copy of the Net Book of
Riddles. If you can't find something in that collection, I
don't know what to tell ya =)

I'm pretty sure you'll find it on

Someone run through it? :)

It has a few. You have to go to the Sphinx

Simple. You don't have to say "shoes" in order to say "boots."

what is it that builds castles, yet tears down mountains

I think my preferred answer would be "boots without shoes".
really a non-sensical question to begin with.

But why would you have to? What wrong answer is this riddle suppose to
trick you into?

Not a specific wrong answer, just concentrating on the objects- "there aren't
any boots that aren't also shoes!"

There are two ways to interpret the phrase "Say boots without shoes."

1. Say "Boots" without (saying) "shoes".

Answer: "Boots".

2. Say "Boots without shoes".

Answer: "Boots without shoes".

When the phrase is written as it was in the original post (Say boots
without shoes) or spoken, it's ambiguous: there's no way to know which
interpretation is meant.

Only if it's written with the quote marks (as in 1. and 2. above) can
you know what the question is asking for.

This is how I've always thought of it. IE, it's a riddle for when you
need to jerk around the riddle answerer. Which, in the Dream Park
bit, was exactly the right move.

Ask an ambiguous question, and you can reject _any_ answer.

A couple of my favorites:

"In my mind's eye I see
"Three circles joined in perfect, graceful harmony;
"Two full as the moon, one hollow as a crown:
"Two from the sea, five fathoms down,
"One from the earth, deep under the ground;
"The whole a mark of high reknown.
"Tell me, what is it I see?"

The answer is: a gold ring set with two pearls. The riddle is from the movie
"Clash of the Titans," and really works well if you can arrange for the ring
to belong to a famous NPC.

The other was most recently reprinted in a Dragon Magazine article, but I
don't know where it originated.

"You'll find me in darkness, but not in the light;
"You can see me in daytime, but never at night;
"In the deepest of shadows I hide in plain sight:
"Tell me then, what am I?"

The riddle has two possible answers: the letter D, and the letter A. This
one is great when you absolutely want the PCs to lose the riddle game -- two
possible answers, but they only get one guess. You can even warm them up by
using the old

"The beginning of eternity,
"The end of time and space;
"The start of every ending,
"And the end of every place"

That answer, is, of course, the letter E.

The problem with that is that same problem that you get with those
silly "lateral thinking" puzzle books. There can be an almost endless
number of possible questions to come up with a specific answer.

And what's necessarily wrong with that? As long as they don't try
to come back with, "What's the answer to this question?" or something
like that, I don't see any problem with giving the players credit for
coming back with a solution you hadn't considered. (The players don't
know which one you wrote down in your notes, so they'll never know.)
