Does anyone have a write-up for Tarzan? (Any edition, although I would
prefer 1st or 2nd) I recently came across stats for Conan in an old Dragon
Magazine and it got me to wondering what Tarzan would be like. Thanks.

For 1st Edition, maybe a 16th level Ranger (no spell abilities)/8th level
thief (no pick pocket, open locks or read language abilities), I don't know,
something like that. I'll post a completed homebrew version if I ever
finish it.

Don't forget his perfect assimilation into British nobility--at least by
the novels. He was only a grunting idiot in the movies.

Johnny Weissmuller? I thought he was Hungarian.

Take a look at the British nobility you see interviewed on the news
next time there's another royal sex scandal -- a grunting idiot would
fit right in.

Those are royals, a different species.

If you have 1E Unearthed Arcana, he should have levels in the
barbarian class, as it most closely matches his abilities. He wouldn't
have the barbarian's magic/illusion detection, fear/hatred of magic
items or horde summoning ability.

If he has barbarian levels, he doesn't need ranger abilities except
for the 1E ranger's followers, which account for the native tribesmen
who sometimes assisted him.

A sample 1E writeup:

15th level Barbarian plus ranger followers

STR: 17 INT: 14 WIS: 16 DEX: 18 CON: 16 CHA: 16

Armor Class: 2 (-8 barbarian dexterity bonus)
Move: 18" ground, 24" swinging through trees on branches and vines
Hit Dice: 8d12 + 28 + 60 (barbarian CON bonus)
Hit Points: 130
Number of Attacks: 2
Damage/Attack: By weapon type
Special Attacks: barbarian abilities
Special Defenses: barbarian abilities
Magic Resistance: Standard
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Size: Medium (6')
Psionic Ability: None
Attack/Defense Modes: None

In 2E he'd have levels as a ranger (for the 2E ranger animal empathy)
and NWP's to match his skills. From the 2E PH:

Animal Handling, Animal Lore, Direction Sense, Endurance, Fire
Building, Fishing, Healing, Herbalism, Hunting, Jumping,
Reading/Writing, Riding (Land Based), Rope Use, Running, Set Snares,
Survival (jungle, savannah), Swimming, Tracking, Tumbling, Weather
Sense.

Some appropriate NWP's from other sources:

Alertness (NoP), Ambush (PO:C&T), Butchering (NoP), Evade Pursuit
(NoP), Fall/Jump (DMO:HLC), Hiding (CBbH), Sense Danger (DMO:HLC)

(NoP = Netbook of Proficiencies, PO:C&T = Player's Option: Combat and
Tactics, DMO:HLC = DM's Option: High Level Campaigns)

If your Tarzan has met civilization, he should also have the social
skills of a British lord (e.g. the PH2 NWP Etiquette). One of the kits
from the 2E Complete Barbarian's Handbook might be appropriate,
particularly the Forest Lord (which was based on Tarzan).

AEG's _Wilds_ has a "jungle lord" PrC... that and a "brachiation"
(vine-swinging) feat. I think you'd need some things like this to properly
simulate Tarzan in D&D.
