I would recommend the old first edition Dungeoneer's Survival Guide, great
for the underdark. But watch out for Night Below boxset. It hails as an
underdark campaign, but drow and not even in it!
From the novels - the entrance to it must be in the far north - north
of Waterdeep, in the mountains. Since Drizzt came from there, and
ended up at Mithril Hall, perhaps in the mountains north of there?
The boxed set doesn't say anything but that the city is 2-3 weeks of
travel from the surface entrance...

This is a little off the subject, but I did just finish a sub-plot
that had the characters journey to Menzoberranzan. The only thing is, they
had previously been adventuring in Greyhawk. (Wicked grin)
My idea:for the purposes of my campaign worlds, there may be many
prime material planes, but there is only one underdark. It is well known
that the drow are masters of planar travel, so why not a domain where all
planes are accessible if you travel far enough. In theory, you could enter
the underdark, travel for about a year, and come out into daylight in
another plane. However, any beings strong enough to survive such a lengthy
foray into the underdark would probably have easier ways of accomplishing
the same feat- like threatening Deities at swordpoint.
Just an idea.

Drizzt did not surface near Mithril Hall (or IceWind Dale for that
matter). When he first reaches the surface he finds himself in the
mountains near a small farming village. Check out Sojourn by RA Salvatore
for the full story. I don't have the book in front of me so I don't know
if they give a name for the village, and even if they do the village may
not appear on any published FR maps. Since Dove Falconhand goes looking
for Drizzt the village is probably somewhere near Shadowdale (in other
words, find some mountains east if Anarouch). Waterdeep is way too far
west to use as a landmark and Drizzt doesn't even find Mithril Hall until
Streams of Silver (another FR novel by RA Salvatore). He's probably right
about the time it takes to get there from the surface though :).

No, Sojourn gives a map at the beginning and lists the village of
Maldobar near Sundabar in the North. In Daughter of the Drow, it gives a
general location of several passages to the Underdark where drow raiders
come out to play. Again, the locations of the openings are in the North.
By using these sources, you could place Menzo near the High Forest area.
At least somewhere between Silverymoon in the north to Secomber in the
south.

And thank god for that. Much as I love Drow, they do get everywhere. It's
refreshing to have an underdark campaign without them.

I think it was in the waterdeep box they did mention that there was alot of
drow from Menzoberranzan in the area. In the books about the drow girl of the
first house of Menzoberranzan did come up northeast of High Forest, so it
should be somewhere in the region around 'Spin of the world'.
//Trizt
He surfaced near a hamlet called Maldobar near Dead Orc Pass NE of
Sundaba, as I remember.

Yep - I did much the same to my group once - except I took them from
the caverns under Castle Greyhawk to the caverns of UnderMountain
underneath Waterdeep... <evil grin>

In Siege of Darkness they tell the direction to Mithril Hall, but I better
check it first (it is west or east, but which...)

Not to comment on the idea, but anyways:
menzoberranzan is located on the prime FR is located.
proves: -during the time of trouble Lloth visitst menzo (Siege of darkness)
-the fiend Ertu couldnt enter menzo because he was banished
from the plane in Icewind Dale

It may be somewhere near Icewind Dale and ten-towns as in R.A.Salvatore's
Drow series Drizzt ends up near Ten-Towns...
Also there is a tunnel near shadowdale (Inside The tower of Ashaba
actually) that leads to the Underdark and somewhere near
Menzobberanzan.... possibly somewhere in between???

It was east. So Menzoberranzan is to west from Mithril Hall
Dove is in Sandabar <sp>, and it is about a days ride to the village< it
think>.

Hi.
Well I believe your major question was where is Menzobaranzan located...
Well its 1am so bear with me.
I believe it is actually somewhere under (hence underdark) the area known
as the dales, specifically shadowdale and the cormanthor wood where there
elves once dwelled. I have seen it mentioned there in a reliable TSR
book or something (maybe even by ed not sure on that though).
There definately is a link between the twisted tower in shadowdale and the
dark elves and an major opening to the underdark via a cave near the
castle Grimstead near shadowdale.
Zanos
As I understand it, the exact location of Menzoberranzan itself is never given,
only some of the caves on the surface that eventually lead to it. The location
of the city itself has been left out for a reason, and a good one IMO--so that
individual DMs can place the city wherever their own campaign requires it.
--Etaan Moonstar, Blademaster of Waterdeep
I agree, but I would tend to suggest that it is somewhat further north.
This is at least somewhat supported by the Icewind Dale and Dark Elf
trilogies. Unless I am mistaken, Drizzt Do'Urden did not have to travel
extremely far to return to his exit point from the Underdark and the
Menzoberranzan.
