When you talk about catching a cold, do you mean getting a runny nose and
a headache or two and maybe coughing a bit? If so, then this is generally
caused by a viral infection, often assisted by being stuck out in the
cold for too long. Perhaps you are thinking of something more like
hypothermia, which is caused by the body losing so much heat that it
cannot restore itself to a normal temperature. This latter condition I
would say is caused by environmental factors and isn't really a disease.
Paladins aren't supposed to be immune to the cold (as in temperature),
just to disease.
: I'm asking this because me (DM) and a player (paladin,
: apparently) couldn't agree. I find it difficult to accept
: that a paladin could do just about anything just because
: he's a holy man and get away with it.
Some players do read too much into the abilities of a paladin (they seem
to think that all paladins are perfect and faultless and nothing can
possibly go wrong with their lives). Of course, you also want to be
careful not to detract too much from the experience of playing a paladin
by making fuzzy rulings about things like diseases.

Have you missed the bit in the PHB where it says that one of the special
abilities of the paladin class is that paladins are immune to disease?
This is in addition to being able to cure disease.

Perhaps R. Mead is using the new S&P rules where you do not necessarily
have to get the immunity from disease ability - your characters are much
more "customizable", and it is possible to take one of the abilities
without the other. For the record, to prevent this type of min/maxing
abuse, you could rule that the Paladin can't heal his own illnesses - that
it is a selfless act and a channeling of the God's power through the
Paladin.
Just a thought

Yep, you are right I had forgotten. Paladins are very rare in my world so
I had forgotten this. Thanks 'Wraith' .

If Lawrence R. Mead is using the S&P rules then he would not state that
paladins in general have the "cure disease" ability, because this also
becomes an option.
