What are some of the best/coolest/funniest character names you've run across
while gaming?

My favs:

Jean-Luc DiBard 1st level human (what else?) bard played by our resident
comedian in our AD&D campaign

Lenny the Gnomeslayer half giant fighter who after a long grueling campaign
that ended in a generous treasure discovered that the only magical weapon that
would fit his big size was a +1 gnomeslayer sword

Envelo Pes: fighter with a 4 Int (a very tired DM was wracking his brain
frantically to name an NPC and snatched up a box of envelopes for inspiration)

Salid Barr the Halfling assassinr: doesn't exactly strike fear into the heart
of the massess

Cal Amite (swashbuckler)
Hufak (cleric, literally HUman First Aid Kit)
Camille Leon (crossdressing female 1/2 elven thief)

Seriously (well, considering this thread, as seriously as can be), some
of the best names I can think of are other words re-arranged.

Travis Sunoa Bladil (Villainous Bastard)
Tipyid Aloof (I pity da fool)
Silvan Bar-sieluvei (pronounced SHEEL-vay, apparently) (Elvis lives in
Aruba)
Rand DeFoconn (Cannon Fodder)
Peter Navitor (Native porter)
etc.

And has anyone ever seen the names table in the Dwarves handbook? I
once rolled up the name Thin Moron with that thing :)

Goody, I'm glad this thread is around again. I'll share my characters' names
for all the new people.

All are human except for Chai and Bailiff

Bolero - Illusionist named after the classical piece by Maurice Ravel, my
favorite of all classical music.

Judge Reinhold - Priest of Justice named after the actor because of the name.

Bailiff Wapner - Half-Elf fighter follower/friend of Judge gained through the
Knight Card from the Deck of Many Things. A "bailiff" for "judge" and Wapner
from people's Court.
Sacapeta - Druid named after two acronyms. Student Action Coalition for
Animals, a whacko animal rights group at my alma mater & People for the Ethical
Treatment fo Animals, the whackiest of all animal rights groups.

Chai - Lawful Good Skeleton Undead priest of the Grim Reaper named after the
Hebrew word for "life".

Adric Navar - My He-Man fighter/priest of Osiris dual-class with three 18's in
ST, DX, and CO. Named after Adric from Doctor Who and Navar from Ladyhawk.

Gilbert Sullivan - Paladin of Ishtar, goddess of healing and protection made up
by my current GM (not the actual name of course). Named after Gilbert from
Anne of Green Gables and Sullivan because of Gilbert & Sullivan. A fellow
player who plays Gilbert's younger sister came up with Sullivan.

Rekovin - Named after an anagram of what he is, an Invoker.

Funny thing is I believe this can be an actual dwarven name derived from
the Dwarves' Deep book. In fact my character was named Belak Bladebite
but became Bela after an unfortunate gender change.

Probably the most funny in joke was the NPC called Dave.

Not funny on its own, but when the DM was so unprepared with names, it was
hillarious as NPC after NPC got the same name, there was dave the baker,
dave the man-at-arms, dave the dodgy guide and dave the merchant.

The last character I played was a Minotaur named Jim. He was a cursed
human, and had been named by his Tribespeople Snapentewah. He was
skinny for a Minotaur, and therefor nicknamed "Slim."

He was known as Snapentewah "Slim" Jim.

That's sort of what happened to our party's (The Slayers of All Things
Nasty) leader. Verkingetterix obtained a sentient sword and asked it
it's name. The sword's name was something absolutely inpronounceable,
so Verkingetterix said, "Mind if I call you Ned?" "No, I don't mind,"
it replied, "but only if I can call you Bob."

Just thought I'd enlighten you - those words are _originally_ from the
movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still". It was the command Klaatu had set up

One of the characters in my group, a half-elf named Bor Hobot (his real
name was Rob Booth, *there's* creativity for you) who was a transmuter,
found out he had heart troubles and would die fairly young unless he found
a magical solution, and was becoming somewhat scared and turning to more
and more desperate plans. I had a future version of himself, with a
magical item that could give him more time, come back in time (his future
self was old, disfigured, and somewhat nastier, since he'd done horrid
things to ensure he'd still live). He was missing a finger, an eye, and
so forth. Anyway, he wasn't recognizable. One of the clues was that his
"name" (alias) was Emit Otemoc (Time to come). He didn't notice.

On a similar note, my friend Mark's character is Karm. Andrea is Dreana.
Jason is Sajon. And, so, with my next NPC, I made Thanan.

It's actually an easy way to make realistic sounding fantasy names.

Here are the names of the PCs and some NPCs from my campaign:

Guyzilion Del Portos: A swashbuckling chaotic thief who believes that he is
the best thief in the universe (his standard introduction line is:"Have you
ever heard of Guyzilion Del Portos?")

Myst De la Vatchesmas: An ex mystic who is now a ranger. He comes from the
far off land of Tabot near the Yehimal mountains.

Nyrym of Theubazdeus: A human priest (collector) of Theubazdeus, god of
hoarding and collecting. A greedy mercenary priest who holds (in a very
tight hand) the purse strings of the party.

Soris Rockfeller: A dwarven fighter/psionicist who just loves his crossbows
and killing trolls.

Rikus Blacklock: A human mage that has toasted more orcs than anybody but
him can count.

Tania Dragonbane: A strong lady from Cormyr who is definitely not a
pushover.

Hokus of Tempus: A true follower of Tempus. Will fight 9 times out of 10
(even when not necessary).

Rhavinder Darkwind: An ex-cleric of Lathander who was transformed into a
vampire. He was subsequently healed and became a thief with a shadowy
streak.

Kaelar the Just: A brave and noble paladin of Torm. She is the party's
conscience, when they listen to her.

Yup yup. I will never forget my friend Corey playing "Yeroc the
deathbringer". And in a Marvel campaign one Mark Miller ran a
character named Kram Rellim.

An old friend of mine had this habit of appending character names
with -axe. Azeaxe, Thaenaeaxe, Aleaxe, Caeraxe, etc.

I played a detective who introduced himself as David Vincent Robert
Quillain P.I. His name was obviously too long, so of all things he was
nicknamed (by the other PCs) SweePea.

Some friends decided to resurrect an old Ravenloft campaign that I
hadn't previously played in. The DM's arch-villain (pride and joy) was
Baron Von Shaethys. One of the players who was returning to the
campaign couldn't remember his own PC's name at first, then thought for
a second that *he* had played a character named Shaethys. The DM tried
to jog his memory reminding him that Shaethys was the arch villain.
But this particular player wasn't sure, he thought it was something...
Shay, Shuh, Sheh... Shash kin? "Yeah," he sez, "I think his name
was Shashkyn. Baron Shashkyn." (it wasn't, I never found out what it
was). The player stuck with 'Baron Shashkyn', much to everyone's
amusement, cuz the word, shashkyn, sounds like something a drunken
munchkin would say. (AAMOF, this player was often a drunken munchkin
;) )
I made my evil drow for the same campaign and named him Alzen
Baerdulaen. The DM didn't tell me right away, but the arch villain's
first name was Alzen, (I thought wrongly that it was Baron, which it
was in the case of Shashkyn).

A friend who's a big hockey buff named a character after two hockey
players, Bryndamoor Mc Tavish. This same friend and I tried to pool
our imaginations and started brainstorming a list of names to aid in
character generation. For just about everyone we've ever played with
has said that name generation is the hardest part of character
creation.

So far, no one has succumbed to the urge to play a character named
Hugh G. Rekshun. Hugh Jhass sounded pretty cool though. :)

The whole "Anagram" game got out of control in one episode of our
campaign. I decided that I was going to have all the NPCs (granted, there
weren't that many) have variations on my name: Nathan.

There was Nantha the ranger, Thanan the water-wizard, Tahnan (pronounced:
Tay-nan) the arena-warrior, Tan'Han the barbarian, Nanath the thief, and
Natahn, the necromancer. The players didn't notice. :)

My players *still* (remarkably) haven't figured out the true identity of the
mysterious and sometimes helpful wizard Emanon. In an upcoming adventure,
they'll no doubt encounter the mage S'irhc Obanrab as well.

Spelling common things backwards has always been a source of names for me ...
in fact, their current adventure is set in the city of S'Reg Tur (it only took
three weeks for the Rutgers graduate in the group to figure that one out).

I've only played AD&D twice (I usually DM).

I don't know if it's cool, but it was accurate.

My first character was named Terrible Teddy. He was a powerful fighter who
was nice to anyone he wasn't killing. And didn't have a clue what to do
with women, except rescue them. He died protecting the party from a giant
spider.

My second was Markus Palomar the Seventh, Teddy's older brother, who came
looking for him and joined the party's quest after discovering Teddy's
untimely end. He eventually married another character (the DM's girl friend
actually... it was a bit weird).

A number of years ago I was at a Con in Blacksburg VA and played a character
called Imtoo Fargon.

When I DMed U3 Yvonne played a mermond (mermaid) named Madison ala Splash.

Megan often played a Ranger named Sumthing Erlee.

Tracy played a character called Sara Lee.

Andy played an elf named Keebler Underwood.

Sayan played a highland gnome (akin to the standard gnome) mage named Gdug
Ghenning (silent 'G's).

C.J. played a lowland gnome (akin to a hobbit or halfling) thief named Frito
Bandito.

Ken had a human fighter named Rossis from Livre who dreamed of being
knighted so he could be Sir Rossis deLivre.

Kathy's elf priestess Fealin Ereb was sometimes called Fealin Groovy.

A popular nemesis in my games is the NPC hobgoblin fighter/priest Jayre
Farwell.

"Stonelight" is the coolest name for a cool chubby little dwarf
with a mean temperament around orcs. It certainly beats what I called
my first PC (ever).. an Elf named after a brand of apple-juice who was
mercifully torn apart by a ghoul at 2nd level so he wouldn't be
ridiculed at conventions. 3:)>

Another cool name was "Astrognome" the illusionist/thief.
He was from Houston, you see ...

I've got a rule that any character I play does not have a successful name
unless at least one other player (preferably the GM) groans the first time
they hear it. Rule #2: the name has to also be playable/repeatable, so as
to not *detract/distract* [too much] from the game.

Some of my characters (usually best if pronounced out loud):

Aar D'Varkh (big dumb fighter)

Bah Raen (big not-too-dumb fighter)

Elron Hubbard dela Quisenart (munchkin elf with 18/93 STR, ambidex., 2-weap
style, 2 long swords, specialized in long sword. He quickly discovered how
to "slice with one and dice with the other", and added the last half to his
name)

Henning Blackstone (Illusionist)

Others I've seen:

Thumper Hilltrot (halfling fighter specialised in halberd. Don't ask.)
Aurora Lothlorien (female paladin)
Grunk (half-ogre specialized in boot-to-the-head.)
Anna N. Radclith (cleric; name is an anagram of the player's name)
Rand Althemyan (swashbuckling half-elf with a sense for fashion)
John Mordenkainen, Jr. ("no relation")
Morjaz "the Horse f*****"... oops, that's what everyone *else* called him ;)

(the player often had to skip sessions, so the character kept getting left

"guarding the horses"...and the other players started wondering about him)

Along the same lines, I once threatened my players that I'd bring in a
dwarven NPC named "Hymen Firehammer".

(The best part of it is, that's a real name! I found it in one of those
interminable lists of people who donated money to my university at some
time.

Of course, one of my players immediately countered that this dwarf's wife
must be the (in)famous PlayDwarf model, Vanessa Columnforger.

name was an acronym of the first syllable of the three Companions at the time,
including the infamous Scumminous Dregg.

IMC, dwarven names are very odd to the human ear. For example:

Maabus Throckwaddle Svartsvbart

the son of Throckwaddle Grumfelter Svarstbart

the brother of Wellfast Grumfelter and Brockhurst Grumfelter Svartsbart

The naming convention is GivenName Father'sName ClanName

If a dwarf's player wants a common sounding name like "Johnathan" or
"Robert", they can take it, but other dwarves will look at them as if
their parents must have been crazed.

>>What are some of the best/coolest/funniest character names you've run >>across while gaming?

here is a list from my various gaming groups over the years:

Amble Stickyfingers- a halfling thief
Stabby Killmore- an assassin
Mog- a fighter with an intelligence of 4
Jiffipop Takesumoor- my halfling thief( i was really pressed to come
up with a name!)
Hapifeet Mostungoode- anti- paladin from the same session
Bestus Activitibus- a drow gladiator
Ugh- my tribal shaman(using the savage wizard kit from the Wiz
handbook). He had a ring with the neatest command words ever given
to me by a DM(it would produce rations("Cooka de good
grubyummy") and find direction("A whichaway de gohuh")
Execrable Accrue- belonged to my friend Bruce. He was a witch
in Ravenloft who turned out to be a vampire. The
character was named by the "power" that provided his spells.
the dictionary defines "execrable" as "to be
cursed" and "accrue" means "to come to be"
Brother of 14 Sons of 2 Parents- another of Bruce's. what makes it
even funnier is that he said it's pronounced "Fonky Fonky
Leroy".

Axes High!

I tend to avoid pun names, but I have has such wonderful luck with
the random name generation tables in teh Dwarves handbook that I just
had to keep them:
For my my Dwarven sharpshooter I rolled up Faraim, I later decided
that the correct Dwarven pronounciation for his name was Fa-raim and the
humans kept mispronouncing it. It made for more interesting role play
situations. (He made it to 5th level before he ever had to use a melee
weapon in combat.)
For my half-Dwarf Bouncer I rolled up Kilur. He worked in the Spill
and Swill in Ravensbluff.

Actually, he just popped up at the book store my sister worked at, and
signed a few books. The signature says- "You have a great sister-
appreciate her!" :)

While not as grandiose, my favorite name has always been: "Juan Tumany".

I called my character "Tindor Steelblade, the Paladin of Shadowdale, the
Mon'Thall, the Champion of Torm, He Who Has Been Touched by Torm, Bearer of the
Mark of Legend!"

(I think we all know which god I chose to venerate <G>)

I also called my sword "Dragonboon, Holy Avenger of the Golden Orb, Sword of
Sunscale!".

After about 50 or so introductions, everyone started yelling at me to quit it.

BTW: He's now dead. My current character is "Leo, Son of Rofelin" (a wemic
ranger). He, too, wields Dragonboon.

For all you math geeks out there:

Effenafex Vorenien

(Read aloud)

My all time worst was a fighter named Orcmeat. THe party was battling
orcs, and inevitably my character died on the first encounter. I'd roll
a new character, and the same thing would happen. After several hours
and sevearl characters late, I just called one Orcmeat. OF course, he
lived.

In a campaign I ran we were up against an known entity named THE HEART OF EVIL.
Everytime the name was muttered out of thin air would come a DA DA DA DUM. It
was fun because if as the DM I forgot to do it some one else in the group would
remember. It came in handy to frighten NPC's as it would resound even if the
name was whispered. . .

Butch - ranger
Gary Who? - psionicist, who believed that he was world famous (which he of

LOL! I'm inspired to share some of the standout names I've encountered in my
years of gaming, containing either bad puns or a certain romantic, poetic
quality:

Mongo Bizar: A berzerk Saracen warrior.
Havarti: a cheese-obsessed, swashbuckling mouse rogue.
Dysentarius: A talkative Roman legionary.
Rodian Dayfarer: A dashing pirate captain.
Brock Deepdelven: A dungeon-loving badger.
Creptin: A scheming, socially adept monarch.
the Ashwickens: a race of vampiric undead, ruled by a lich called the Hemarch.

My Current Character's name is Indigo Colorblind - she is a half-elf Fighter
who when asked "what God do you worship?" She replied "I'm agnostic." The
efreeti then stated "I have never heard of that religon, What is it's symbol?"
(the DM trying to trip me up as I hadn't picked a diety yet) I then preceeded
to draw a circle with a slash through it (the anti, or No symbol).

My brother's most notorius character was/is Zald Darkheavens. A Warlock
Necromancer.

on a humorous note, we have a Dwarf fighter (its from a kit, but not sure
which) in our party named Gouge M. Good

Our Party is known as The Circle Of Silver.

Until my character receives some type of title, the name is usually as
unique as possible without being extravagant. The exception to this was
for an elf, who had a very long name (don't they all?). Anyway, the two
names I decided to actually use (I could have shoved a lot of middle names
in, but I didn't) was Caelaeranon Alterisis.

Wouldn't an Agnostic, "Someone who believes that there can be no proof
of the existence of God but does not deny the possibility that God
exists," have a question mark as a religious "symbol?"

While an Athiest "One who denies the existence of a God(s)," use the
null-set symbol?

Some of my favorites included:

Slaminon Yerspecies - a Dwarf Fighter.

Fu Ling Yew - an Illisionist.

Suk Fat - the party cook.

Tsu Doh Nymh - a thief (assassin?)

Here's a funny town name I've used:
Asystolie - A town overrun by undead. Asystolie (misspelled) is a medical
term meaning the heart has stopped.

Probibly. However, I play my character as one who says "not" a lot to the
pariies rather evangilistic Cleric of Mystra. Ex: he says "the Powers of
Mystra will set us free" .. my response "not likely.. but it couldn't hurt".
I digress.. a question mark would have been more appropriate for an agnositc...
