I am writing out a copy of all the AD&D2 spells in existence in a list by
school. I will send this list to anyone who would like a copy, simply
email me to get on my "list." If you want to add spells (especially your
own) send them to me with an adress that someone can send mail to asking
for the spell. Good luck and thanks.

Spells by School

This list places all spells for the AD&DII gaming system in a list by
school of magic. It is here for you to use, not for me to make money, so
it is also free of charge. All spells listed in the Player's Handbook
appear just as a name, with no notes after them. Reversable spells are
marked with an asterisk. Anyone wishing to add spells to the list, please
send the spells to the Internet email address <Mesqu...@aol.com>. Also
send the complete name of the sourcebook. Spells from Dragon Magazine are
acceptable, provided the number of the issue is sent. Anyone wishing to
send a copy of one of their own personal spells, send the spells with an
Internet Address where the spell can be requisitioned from. Thanks and
enjoy the spells.

Unlikely as you're replying to a 25 year old post (Geez has it been that long? I feel old, wait, I *am* old.)

2e has the Wizard's spell Compendium and Priests Spell Compendium which I think had all this info in an index at the back of each respectively.

You can legally buy the PDF of the PSC from here:
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/17382/Priests-Spell-Compendium-Vol-1-2e

It wouldn't surprise me if there's a separate full list like this somewhere on the interwebs too.

Also taking up space in my collection, "Wizard Spell Cards" and "Deck of Priest Spells", with a separate index card for each spell. Blanks and spells from Tome of Magic are included.

I got these back in the day. Functionally, the tomes (it was a
four-volume set) wasn't really that useful, if only because of the
sheer quantity of spells made things unmanagable. Many of the spells
were setting- or adventure-specific too, and many of those that were
not instead were duplicates of other spells. Nonetheless, I loved
those books; they /felt/ like I imagined a real spellbook, and - even
if I never really used any of the magics described therein - thumbing
through its pages often inspired me with my own adventures.

I still have my WSC (I think, should be in the garage), I never picked up the
PSC probably because I viewed the WSC like you did, a bit too unmanageable.

The Magic Item Compendium I found far more useful, and used a good deal.

Same here. Plus, as mentioned, the WSC was like having your own set of
Magic-User spellbooks in real-life, but clerics didn't use
spell-books, so it lacked that panache.

Presumably you mean the "Encyclopedia Magica" and not the far, far
inferior "Magic Encyclopedia". The former was an excellent reference
(I even managed to get two of the volumes with the faux-leather covers
that cost TSR so much money). In actual use it was - again - a bit too
comprehensive; I mean, how many times would I ever need a "Bench of
Encumbrance"? Still, I used items from it far more than ever I did
spells from the WSC, and it became my go-to reference for even common
magic items whenever I needed to look up information (e.g., exactly
how does a "girdle of feminity" work?). And like the WSC, it helped
inspire me in the creation of my own magic items.

Contrarily, the two-volume "Magic Encyclopedia" set was just trash;
possibly the worst - and certainly the most disappointing - product
put out by TSR. It was essentially just an index of items; if you
wanted any real details about the artifact in question -including itse
game stats - you were required to look it up in the source material
(much of which was out of print).

Oh, yes that's what I meant. Just checked my bookshelf and I have the Encyclopedia Magica.

In all honesty having an index which would let you look up what book the item came from strikes me as reasonably useful.

Yes, if you own all the books it references, /and/ if you know what
the items actually are. It is great to know that Rainbow Armor can be
found in Polygon issue #43, but not knowing what it does means I have
to dig out that book to see if it is relevant to my needs. And even
back in 1992, most of those books just weren't available to buy
anymore . Actually, these days the Magic Encyclopedia (ME) might be
more useful than it was thirty years ago, since most of TSRs back
catalog has been made available again as PDFs.

The Encyclopedia Magic (EM) not only had a full index of items, but
gave you the description right there on the page (complete with
original source).

Of course, the two-volume ME would set you back only $20 ($35 in
2019), while the four-volume EM cost $100 ($154 in 2019). For thrifty
people who owned most of TSRs backlog, the ME may have offered better
bang for the buck. For the rest - including TSR itself, which
reputedly created the EM as an apology for the ME - the four-volume
set was by far the preferable choice.
