Thanks. Cool List. I still play 2nd Edition and Spell Components was an
optional rule then, I don't know about the later versions, but the whole
spell component thing was a little * so I don't use them, but this is still
a handy list for reference.

guy carrying around a sack of little baggies filled with graveyard dirt and
grasshopper legs and winesoaked owl feathers and such that he has to rummage
around for while the mean orcs bang on his head, and you have to say things
like, "you can't cast that spell because you don't have any more basilisk
eyelashes."
To simplify game play, which some of my players definitely need, I developed
my little world using a channeling of mystical energies type thing.
I do admit though, that use of spell components adds a little more flavor to
the game. And while I don't use them for spell casting, I do require them
for potions.

I've seen skill based magic system (True Sorcery for example) that give
a bonus if you include a spell component that is not required. Something
similar could be done in D&D's Vancian system if you wanted.

They have some of that in 3.5E spellcasting. In COMPLETE MAGE (p 135)
there is a section on Optional Spell Components. By adding some
pretty expensive spell components you can add in a metamagic effect to
a limited selection of spells. The cheapest is Angel Down (100 gp per
spell level), which adds the Extend feat to Abjuration spells. The
most expensive is Golden Desert Honey (300 gp per spell level) which
adds in the Rapid Spell Feat for Conjuration/Summoning spells. Other
effects can emulate Heighten Spell, Widen Spell and Enlarge spell,
while Primal Essence can substiture for other expensive spell
compnents (Primal Essence is MORE expensive than what it is
substituting for, you are paying for the versatility).
I don't see anything as "Different Interpretations" here, the actual
rules seem pretty clear. (2E PH p. 85-86)
1) Using spell components at all is an optional rule in 2E (blue
background). The standard rules don't include it.
2) Once you have decided to include the optional spell component
rules, they state that "For simplicity of play it is best to assume
that a spellcaster with any sense has a supply of the common items he
is likely to need" (i.e. don't bother tracking the easily available
and almost free stuff that you know you might need). But for
expensive or rare items you would need to acquire them and track them,
if you suddenly found a new spell that required a material component
that you had never previously needed you would have to acquire it (it
might be available in any town but might NOT be available in the
middle of a dungeon) and of course if you are taken prisoner and all
your material possessions are taken away you won't even have the
common stuff you routinely use.
DMs would be free to make up any variant of that that they liked, of
course, but that would be under "House Rules" rather than "Different
Interpretations" (IMHO, of course).

Actually, used but not tracked does have meaning--they only matter if
something deprives you of your components or if you learn a spell
while you don't have the opportunity to obtain components.
