Would it be possible to use ritual magic, astral tracking, watchers,
etc. to find someone who's been petrified (per the spell)? My first
reaction would be, "no, the target is a lump of stone and therefore not
alive" but it's somewhat important (though not vital) to think this
through, since my players were hired to kidnap someone and decided to do
so by keeping her petrified all the time.

Id say it is trackable. The targets "soul" needs to be somewhere. I mean,
theres gotta be some sort of astral signature left b ehind, specially
considering that the petrifying process is reversible, not permanent.

I would say if the ritual magic looks for the aura, yes, if not, no...if the
person were a dead limp of stone they wouldn't return to normal when the
spell's reversed or released...

Simple answer: Of course it's possible, since it doesn't say is isn't
anywhere.

Complex answer: I don't think that petrify spell changes anything here.
The "identity" isn't changed, the person is still the same person, has
the same aura, etc. The spell doesn't change the aura (that's a very
complex metamagic), so you could perhaps say that some forms of metamgic
(finding someone with a curl of his/her hair) may be a little bit more
difficult (+1 perhaps, but not more), but imho there's no reason to say
that finding someone would be not possible suddenly.

Ok so here we go. I see no way to track a rock since that is what the
person is now. is might have been a person at on time. But so was a
fossil could you take a fossil and one from something like an ordinary
trilobite. No you can not. it all has to do with Auras and a dead
thing not inhabited by a spirit is just a hunk of inert matter. the
reason you can track a person with a hair or finger say is that the
rest is still alive and has an aura it is linked to. kill the aura and
the material is just material. So there we go a persons 2 cents.
