PEACE ERUPTS!
Hvy Metal II is over! After 44 hard-fought updates, 1EyedMonster,
beep and Baldoria emerged as winners. Congratulations!
See the end of the announcements below for final power report and
awards.
Notable events since the last status report:
1EyedMonster mopped up the last bits of Wales, sacking the capital.
Lowland also got a few sectors.
beep and Dethklok broke through DonQuixote's defenses. Baldoria and
then 1EyedMonster jumped in, and together they reduced DonQuixote from
over 700 sectors to insignificance in four turns.
The Lowland / Baldoria stalemate continued until 1EyedMonster launched
one of his lightning attacks, and overran the capital. Victory was
declared soon after.
Metallica reached nuke tech first, followed by Lowland, Dethklok and
beep two updates later, and Baldoria another two updates later.
However, no nuclear weapons were used before the game officially
ended. A few were afterwards.
Loc-Nar bombed the last Plunderbot mountain island to deity, but not
before the mysterious AI penetrated and took over two PNN satellites.
What is it up to? Can it be contained? Stay tuned for Hvy Metal III!

In my opinion, Empire models reality reasonably well until tech 140 or
so. After that, general wackiness goes through the roof.

well I tell you, back in the day, nukes started at 240

} and why in the world is the 250kt fusion weighing 13
Same reason why the 10kt fission is so bulky: it's new. Refinement
required to shrink it.
The Ivy Mike device (first real thermonuclear test, 1952) weighed >70
metric tons, including cryogenic equipment.
The TX-16 (first deployed thermonuclear, 1954) weighed some 18 metric
tons.
The W47 warhead (1960) weighed some 320kg.

Current stock game: nukes start at tech 280, 5mt at tech 370. About
half of the nukes are lemons not worth building.
For HM2, we removed all the lemons, and reduced tech levels some. I'm
sure more tweaking is required to get nukes right. I'm hoping this
game will help us with that.
> Announcement from Metallica, (#5) dated Thu Aug 14 14:48:50 2008
point taken on weight
if I had my druthers, I'd set up the weights and
tech something like this:
Nuke Type tech Wt
10kt fission 170 12lb
50kt fission 180 14lb
100kt fission 190 16lb
5kt tactical 200 2lb
250kt fusion 240 12lb
500kt fusion 255 8lb
50kt tactical 260 3lb
1mt fusion 270 8lb
3mt fusion 285 10lb
5mt fusion 300 12lb
keep the prices down to something manageable
20K for a 5mt fusion is quite plenty as is.
and use the weights to manage what planes can
carry the payload vis a vis missiles vs planes
heck if you want to get really cute, you can
have generations of nukes that weigh less
which can be MIRV'd from the same missile.
and really, ABMs are going to suck, particularly
against any Air bursting nukes
(though it'd be neat to arm abms and asats with
5kt tacticals (maybe a 1kt tactical as well)

the game was over (and lost) for Loc-Nar by the end of

( all that can be done in 10 minutes per update)
But by then, beep had already proven that the land of
citizens can grow big and become no.1, the 1Eyed had proven
that he can take over large numbers of sectors in the blink of
his eye, and Baldoria has been fighting well then and kept on
fighting.

> Announcement from visitor, (#20) dated Tue Aug 19 12:43:25 2008
From the desk of the Overlord (prior to the recent actions):
It's time to step back and take a candid assessment of each viable player
still in the game. This assessment will consider their Empire skills,
famous quotes, favorite fantasy, and potential post game employment. And
this time, instead of starting from the bottom and working my way up, I'll
start at the top.
beep
Long time Empire player that knows what it takes to put together a large
invasion force just to see it shot to hell by Mirkwood planes. If you are
looking for words of wisdom from this ruler, take to heart his quote "I
make sure I take a shower at least once every three or four updates". His
favorite fantasy includes lifting the keys off the county medical examiner
and sneaking into the morgue during the new moon. After HM2 he plans on
opening a vegan eatery in Texas.
1EyedMonster
Another well entrenched Empire player that can't quite seem to find a real
life away from the keyboard. Mr. Ed actually invented the technique of
smashing all of the enemy's resources and then invading. Up to that point,
Empire was a pretty dull game. He also is credited with the "Counting
Sheep" method of falling asleep. But as he says "Once you get up to 3 or
4, even the best of us get pretty tired." I'll skip mentioning his fantasy
again. And after HM2 he plans to visit New Zealand.
Lowland
Lowland is actually the basis of the Star Trek episode where Captain Kirk
is split into 2 in the transporter. This half of Lowland is a blood
thirsty, ceaseless, inhuman, killing machine. His other half works in a
yogurt stand and keeps failing all the tryouts for American Idol.
Mistakenly told an elk hunter that his wife "had a nice rack mounted up
there". Rather boring fantasy includes the TV remote and Pay-Per-View.
Previous fantasies all included hermaphodites. After HM2, Lowland wants
to become a professional mall slouch.
DonQuixote
Due to a retraining order, I am required to stay at least 3 e-mails,
announcements, or telegrams away from Mr. Quixote. He, of course, is able
to park out in the street in front of my house and shoot out my porch light
every Saturday night.
Baldoria
Despite rumors to the contrary, Baldoria bears little resemblance to Curly
Howard. The origins of his country name extend back to college days when
some of his drunk friends (funny how alcohol is always involved) tried to
use a drill press to give him a vasectomy. Prospective employers, not
knowing his medical history, would always wonder why he would ask in an
interview "Does the job include the use of rotating equipment?" All of
Baldoria's fantasies include Rogaine now. After HM2, he plans on cruising
around the back roads in a 72 Nova looking to exact revenge, which in his
own words includes needle nose pliers, one folicle at a time.
Loc-Nar
Loc-Nar's Empire reputation comes from his early game play, where he always
executes a nearly flawless plan. However, after he breaks sanctuary, things
usually spiral down for him. His tag line "A census output that is short and
sweet is the best" has endeared him to many a neighbor. Unfortunately for
Loc-Nar, all of his fantasies (and real life adventures) center around the
phrase "short and sweet". And keeping with this theme, after HM2, Loc-Nar
plans to open up a series of mall kiosks where midgets sell cotton candy.
Metallica
Been playing Empire since before computers had operating systems. Remember
the movie "The Mummy"? Half way through the movie, the Mummy is still a
partially decrepid corpse with roaches climbing around it. That Hollywood
clip was based on a young Metallica. These days he is most likely to be
overheard saying "What! Speak up. I can't hear you!" Metallica can't
even put together a decent fantasy without Viagra. After HM2, he plans on
making the speaking engagement tour with his lecture "My Days in the
Spainish-American War".
TheDiplomat
Seems like every 6-7 months, some small backwater country in Africa
overthrows the corrupt government and we see videos of the body of the
former "President for Life" being drug behind a pickup truck. (I
especially like the one where they cut off the guys ears and made him
eat them before they hooked him up to the F-150.) Anyway, TheDiplomat
serves this purpose in this anno. He is not really viable in this game.
But I needed an extra to play the part of the diposed dictator. For the
past couple of months, TheDiplomat has been constantly quoting Monty
Python claiming "I'm not dead yet." But we all know. I can appreciate
his favorite fantasy - that of breaking sanctuary and finding a buxom
red head in the neighboring sector. After HM2, he plans on joining the
next game and breaking sanctuary in hopes of finding a buxom red head.
Keep the faith Dippy.

i oppose beep's victory declaration on grounds that he did not list
our country names in proper alphanumeric order. everyone knows that
'1' comes before 'b' (particularly when not capitalized). the correct
order should be "1EyedMonster, Baldoria and beep".
plus it more closely matches the true, actual power rankings as
determined by POGO itself. rumors that a relationship between
plunderbot and 1EyedMonster had anything to do with the recent
changes in power chart computations are completely, utterly and
totally not false.

He looked too small; he couldn't _possibly_ survive bearing the
onslaught of the enemy nations. Yet, through seemingly impossible
contortions, he did.
The Alain Bernard diplomacy award: Dentrassi
Everyone of his neighbors wanted to see him dead. Heck, even as
he was being overun by others Beehive even went through me just
so he could get a few more shots at him.
The Synchronized Swimming or "That's an Olympic Sport?!?" award: HeavyBarrel
Don't know what game he was playing, but it wasn't Empire.
The French 4x100 freestyle relay team award: Don Quixote, Wales, Lowland, Loc-Nar
It looked great on paper, yet somehow they managed to get beat by the
good guys.
The "Are they one of those former Soviet republics?" Award: Dethklok and Metallica
They showed up, looked like they really knew what they were doing, but no
medals to take home.
The South Ossetia or "do we play for the russians, now?" award: TheDiplomat
Should have been an important member of the enemy alliance, yet the world
stood by and watched him get ground under.

--- At the Capitol City, Kill 'Em All ---
TheDeathAngel straps himself into the Aardvark 691
(sadly, 666 wasn't available because
Oh My God... There's No Market!!) and checks
the coordinates one more time. The world
was entering a time of peace and safety and
his country had survived to the end by
being nice to everyone.
The plane took off without a hitch and headed to
the Remote Bloodstar Testing Grounds deep in the
plains of Metallica. TheDeathAngel put his googles
securely over and caressed the release switch
with the care given to the most intimate of lovers.
The Target was clearly outlined, A pair of bunny
slippers and an uzi lay aligned in a manly salute.
with the lightest touch, He pulled the bomb release
and banked hard left.
A slight smile crept over his face as he counted
down and thought, "Next time, we play for keeps."

Hvy Metal II is over! 1EyedMonster, beep and Baldoria won.
First, thanks to all who played. Without you, the fodder^H^H^H^H^H^H
players, we wouldn't have a game. It was fun sitting up top and
watching the carnage you wrought on each other.
Secondly, congratulations to the victors 1EyedMonster, beep, and
Baldoria! In a hard, long game you proved to have what it takes to
endure and excel. Excellent work!

You will get a player survey shortly. Please take a moment to rant on
what you didn't like and maybe promote what you did like about this
game. No, plunderbot isn't giving out any phonenumbers...
A writeup of the game will be on the website later including survey
results, deity comentary on various things, and a copy of the
presentation based off the mid-game poll.
Watch for Hvy Metal III : What was lost...
> Announcement from Hanuman, (#22) dated Tue Aug 26 14:53:48 2008
Hvy Metal II might have been the longest games of Empire in recent
memory: May 5 to August 20, 108 days, 44 updates. Retro (2004) had 51
updates, but lasted "only" just under 100 days, and LOTR II (2003) had
41 updates in also just under 100 days.
As to be expected in such a long game, there have been ups and downs.
The lowest point for me was watching HeavyBarrel leave all that dough
to whichever lucky bastard got there first (HeavyBarrel moved
overseas, and couldn't solve his connection problems there). But luck
evened out in the end, and the winners won the proper way, by
outfighting the competition.
Watching tenacious defensive actions and skillfully executed blitzes
was among the high points. Another high was the performance of two
raw neophytes: BlackCompany and Xymaca. You two went down fighting.
Well done!
Despite going the full distance, we didn't get the nuclear end game I
had hoped for. I can hardly blame the players for slacking on tech;
Metallica averaged at a respectable 6.75 points per update. I figure
we'd have to put much, much more money into the game to see more tech
than that, or lower the tech log. Which means the high tech units
don't make much sense with stock money and tech log parameters.
We didn't screw up a single update this time. Rewriting the update
scheduler was worth it.
You triggered more than 200 internal errors, not counting the test
blitz. Most were known bugs we couldn't fix in time for this game ---
a brand new check to catch a certain class of bugs found lots of them
--- but some were previously unknown. Together with the stuff you
reported, we brought in a rich bug harvest. Thank you for that!
There's lots more for me to learn from this game. I'm looking forward
to your replies to the player survey!
A special thank you to those who answered our calls for replacement
players! Their help contributed a lot to this game, and I deeply
appreciate it.
Thanks again for playing, and I hope to see you again in another game!
