Tough choice.

Angband/Moria probably are at the very top.
Next would be a few games form the 8-bit era. Archon and Empire
(TRS-80 program, not the PC version), and such.

Top one of all time? Easy.

Elite.

To date, nothing has the flexability to storyline or potential
patsh to follow. The later Frontier was even better - just
everything you wished it would be.

THere is an Elite III in the works - and when it comes out -
hold onto your hats. Stories, empires, 100,000+ planets to
visit, the works. A good clone of it is Ambrosia Software's
Escape Velocity series, but Elite was just so much better.

There's an Elite 4 in the works. You've probably missed First Encounters,
which was basically a buggy Frontier with better graphics, ugly ships
added, and a scripted story line. And much, much tougher combat.

Begone, infidel!

There was not,
is not,
will not be
a game, better than Stars!

And for all of you followers, that hadn't stood against that heresity,
may each of our beloved Stars! game in each turn proclaim you an usurper!

I had archon II on the atari-800... I wished they'd remake some of those
old 8-bit games, like archon and archon II... I loved both of them!

A few years back a family friend lent me Phantas and I would have to
agree it blew my socks off too.
I love role playing games as well. I think a good story with a puzzle
and a dregree of diffcultly keeps you interested.
I'm also a real sucker for the platform games for the younger ones I
just finished Rachet & Clank on the PS2 and had a ball.

It all depends on what you like of course.

My preferences depends on if it is online games or offline games.

As offline games I liked elite alot but also angband is pretty cool.
Also the old game faith for the amiga was pretty cool back then.

For online games I like my own games the best :)

I don't get around on computer games a whole lot, but one I really
like is the Roman Arena. It's a turn based game that's great for
folks who have stuff to do during their day (like work) but need
something to take their minds away every now and then. You can build
a gladiator, give him weapons, and train his stats and skills. there
are daily duels and arenas to earn exp and cash, plus monthly
controlled arenas. If registered you can join alliances and have
duels there. For the folks who need more attention than the one-a-day
duel or one-a-day arena, there's a non-stop arena that turns once
every six hours. they also have discussion boards and chat.

Follow the link to http://www.romanarena.com/friend.cgi?by=ASUU9151

I'm addicted!

My all time favorite game would have to be the original Civilization.
I spent countless hours trying to play all the different scenarios,
and there's still plenty of stuff I haven't tried out yet.

I used to play a lot of computer games until a couple of years ago.
But gradually I started disliking games because I no longer found them
engaging or fun. I would really like to rekindle that lost interest in
games. Can anyone help me by pointing me to some interesting titles(PC
games only). Please don't mention any title that is more than a year
old, because I wanna know about some of the most interesting games
that are currently doing the rounds.

My top two are X-Com(plus TFTD) and Elite(various versions).

Both are still amazingly good to play, even after this time.

I remember having bad dreams in X-Com because when it was night and
you had to save a city from invasion, things crept up on you and
started firing from the dark and then the things with big mouths
tried to eat you and plasma flew everywhere...

Then your troops got controlled and started firing back at you...

Classic game. So few today have that unseen enemy movement anymore.

Deus Ex was very close in that the AI had the characters move around
and you had to deal with that. Halflife is the typical Doom model - placed
monsters that activate when their models make LOS to you. 360 degree
fully aware at that(ick).

Elite... well, it's still amazing to play.

What's wrong with today's action games? Most action games released
today, specially those
belonging to the FPS genre, feel stale. Yesterday I played the demo of
a game called Chaser
and found that it didn't have anything new to offer. Apparently it is
a big budget game. They
must have licensed a really cool and expensive engine or made it
themselves(which is just as
expensive). And what do they do with this super cool engine? They go
right ahead and create
another half-life game. Have people stopped thinking creatively? Why
is it that every FPS is
happy to walk the same path? Sure we've heard that DOOM3 is going to
bring movie quality
experience to the videogames. But what about it's gameplay? Is it
going to be truly enjoyable?
SOF2 was made by giving the Quake3 engine a cosmetic uplift. But it's
gameplay sucked. A couple
of months down the lane, people won't even remember it. Why can't
developers focus as much
towards the gameplay as they do towards the graphics? This genre has
lost a lot of faithful fan
following due to such reasons. I have already started playing more
sports and racing games.
They are enjoyable as well as graphically well endowed. Action games
should take a cue from
them. Maybe STALKER will finally answer my prayers. Maybe it would
bring a breath of fresh air to
this otherwise stale genre. I know it's possible to exhibit innovation
in this genre- remember Op
Flashpoint?
