I'm giving it a fair shot because it *is* an official Ultima and I've
never completed it (I've completed 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 part 1 and 9), but
I gotta be honest, if it wasn't an official Ultima I'd probably have
given up on it by now.
I tried to Google interviews with Lord British about what he was
thinking when he decided to make Ultima 8 not be set in Britannia and/
or what thoughts went into the design of the game because I'm kind of
curious as to what inspired him to deviate from the formula so far.
For me the game just doesn't seem to have the instant addiction/
immersiveness that basically every other game in the series has. Too
much fluff, not enough puzzles, too much tedious exploring and combat
etc.
Having said that I'm only about an hour into it so perhaps if I
continue to be patient (I do plan to) I'll be more rewarded.
What were your thoughts on Ultima 8? And do you know of any
interviews with LB about what his thoughts were with the game?
Thanks

Find the book "Runes of the Myth Drainer" somewhere in the game. The
author's opinion of Eye of the Beholder 3: Ruins of Myth Drannor summarises
my opinion of U8 quite nicely.
I'm one of the few(?) who actually liked U8. I found the world
interesting, I liked the athmosphere and the NPC's I met. All in all,
for me it lived up to the Ultima standard.
U9 on the other hand.. Ugh!

Thanks!
Are you the same WyrdWeb from the ProjectBritannia forums?

IMHO Ultima 8 simply wasn't Ultima 7, part 3, and that annoyed some
people. With the official patch the game is quite playable, and I do
like the story and setting. I also think the graphics in U8 are really
well done, the nicest of the whole series.

Yep, I frequent those forums and am a co-producer of the U6 Project.

Haven't played it so can't answer... but why did we skip 3? If you
got through 2, which sucked, you can surely manage 3. :-)

It has been a long time, but from what I recall I enjoyed Pagan as a game
but not so much as an Ultima. It felt like an attempt to push the series
into a different direction, at least for a time. Not unlike (and you wont
get this if you haven't read the Sword of Truth) the time Richard spent
trapped with the Sisters of the Light. It was supposed to be dark and
oppressive and certainly we were meant to feel the loneliness of being
separated from the companions and stranded on a very strange world. The way
Serpent Isle came to a close was almost a foreshadowing of the atmosphere of
Ultima 8.
That said I don't think I would have complained if Ultima 8 hadn't felt so
far removed from the core Ultima series. I always felt there was a way to
achieve the above feeling without taking us away from the world and stories
that made Ultima, well, Ultima.
If you want to talk about game mechanics... the engine looked "neat" but I
felt like I was in Super Avatar World 8.
At any rate those are my two cents... plus a few dollars to cover inflation.
