I've started playing the games in the Ultima Collection and I was wondering
about sound. Akalabeth has a patch that gives MIDI music. I know that U1-5
had no sound card support (except for that U4 music patch someone cooked up)
but I thought that they had PC speaker sounds. I'm playing Ultima 1 right
now and I'm not getting any PC speaker sound. I am playing it out of
windows (full screen - doesn't seem to be any way around that). I recently
played the free distribution of U4 and also got no speaker sounds. I know
my speaker works because I've tested it with some other DOS programs.

Am I wrong about the speaker sounds? Any ideas?

Thanks!

The documentation of Ultima I says type 'N' Noise to toggle sound on
ot off.
It's 'V' in Ultima III and IV.
Anyone knows about Ultima II ?

When I played Ultima I - VI just recently, the sounds seemed to be
playing too fast and at a low volume or something compared to how they
used to be. Sometimes, i didn't get any pc speaker sounds at all.
This is on a Pentium 200, so maybe on faster computers the pc speaker
effects are so messed that you can't even hear them at all?

Moslo didn't seem have any affect on them.

This is certainly true for U6. As I upgraded my PC over the years, the
pitch got higher and higher. On my K6-200 I just hear a little click
when it tries to play a sound.

It wouldn't. You need to lock the sound system to the timer, and this
probably can't be done without a recompile. Of U6.
