Grrrrrr

What is the answer to the Joshua's riddle in Lord British's castle?

If the eight philosophies of the avatarhood combine into and are made
from truth, love, and courage,

What one thing creates and is created by all truths, all love, and all
courage?

Any help would be most appreciated

I always thought this was just a preview of the final question you're
asked in the game; if so, the answer would be INFINITY. However, he
never accepted that answer, or any other I tried to give him.

It's not really a riddle, it's just a hint as to what you will need to
finish the game. Personally, I think that particular answer was the only
thing about U4 I didn't like... since it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

This little riddle has been bothering me for 10 years now. <grumble>

I'm betting that there isn't a correct answer, probably just another
thing to irritate ppl like me for years and years =)

I must tell you this!!!!

It will be MUCH cooler and fun for you if you figure it out on your own. It
is one of the most important elements of the game, and integral to the
Ultima ethic. I can only tell you this: The game DOES tell you the answer,
but you have to keep your eyes open. It also tells you the answer slowly,
over time. Don't read any cheats or anything, it will be much more fun if
you figure it out.

Well grumble no more. The answer is indeed "infinity", and the riddle does
make sense, in a certain context. If you master "all truths, all love, and
all courage" in Ultima 4 by praying at each of the virtue shrines, you're
granted visions of individual letters which make up the word "infinity".
Hence, in a sense, "infinity" creates, and is created by, the other virtues.
Get it?

Later on one of the characters in Ultima 6 explained this a little better, by
saying that the virtue runes themselves have letters inscribed on their backs.
He said "they would make a word if put together, but that hasn't been done for
a long time...". It's a veiled reference to the infinity riddle in U4.

Thanks. I'll try it. Although I'm pretty darn sure I tried infiniti
before.

It's funny, but the first time I played Ultima 4 I never found the answer
in the game. I ended up getting to the codex and answering that question
wrong, so I used a disk editor to find the answer (before the days of
widespread "encryption").

LOL
It was late when I wrote that.
I tried BOTH infinity AND infiniti =)
Joshua doesn't give any intelligent response to either

My bet is that he doesn't know

I think you're right. Joshua simply tells you the riddle,
so you are not confronted with it the first time in the abyss.

BTW, replaying the Abyss really sucks, I let the game lie down
a full month after 2 failures before I finished it.
Of course, the reward is worth some hack'n-slash-kill-heal-kill...

It is "infinity", the one true axiom. Joshua has no response if you ask him
about infinity, though; the riddle's just to get you thinking about the
axiom.

No, I can't really explain it. This was the one part of LB's virtue system
I never really did understand. I think he just wanted some eight letter
word to act as a final password to the codex, so he invented this infinity
thing. Infinity encompasses all time and space, all truth, love, and
courage; or so says LB.

Um... well, that is... no. But I can offer that (for anyone who never
notices things, like me) the gargoyle system is based on singularity,
the opposite of infinity. Infinity, I guess, encompasses everything,
and from it love, truth, and courage are derived. Passion, diligence,
and control are derived from singularity. Why? Beats me. Although, if
you compare, say passion to compassion, passion seems more like a
personal thing than compassion... compassion is more general. BTW, I
know in U7 Cove is the town of Passion - are Vesper and Paws ever
referred to as the towns of diligence and control? (Vesper I could see,
having gargoyles there, but Paws? And which would it be for each?
Perhaps diligence in Paws, cause all the people work hard, and control
in Vesper, since both sides want to be in charge, and be the only race
there...? Just speculation...)

Britannia and Vesper both have gargoyles.

How about Britannia for control (the seat of government) and Vesper for
dilligence (because the gargoyles there work in the mines)?

Yeah. I'm just guessing here, but I assumed it was because TLC are
ways to relating to Other, and CPD are ways of relating to Self. Hence
TLC would be outward-directed towards Infinity, and CPD
inward-directed towards Singularity (a 'single' point). Don't quote me
on that, though ;)
