A month or two ago, I found an add in an old Dragon Magazine (#101,
September 1985, Page 17). It is a pretty small on just a rectangle
taking up the bottom right corner.

I thought it might be of interest and I was wondering if anyone knew
anything about it. It just seems rather strange to me to think there
were products like this floating around.

I know from reading Underworld's page (actually I e-mailed him about
this, but he has never responded so I posting to .series so he can see
this) there was a cottage industry for these types of things at one
time.

I have a copy of Ultimaster. It is a character editor for Ultima
II and Ultima III on the Apple ][.

My copy (picked up second hand) comes with the disk and a
cardstock 'manual' (think of one of the early Ultima player reference
cards and you've got it) that tells you how to use the program.

Hehe. It was probably hard to keep track of all the little things that came
out back then. Still, you've got to admire the anarchy of it.

Oh well, those things are probably vaporware...probably. :)

Nichols Services wasn't vapor, or at least I'm pretty sure they
weren't. They advertised those Wizardry and Ultima editors and utils
in most of the Apple II magazines I read back then; including their own
Ultima 3 scenario called "The Fire World" or somesuch.
Who knows, I might still have some of the advertising and flyers
they sent me.

...playin' Ultima2 right now...

Not vaporware at all. Back when the C64 and Apple 2 were the prime gaming
computers there were many cottage industry type programs for modifying and
creating new scenarios for the popular role playing games. Also lots of
homemade hint books and a few homemade game magazines were available. Sort of
last decade's equivalent of the fan created web page.

Check ftp.apple.asimov.net, there's a disk image (AppleII) with
Ultima 3 utilities. Character editors, map printers, and pretty much a
full game editor where you can redo maps, messages, seemingly just about
everything short of painting new bitmaps. Also, on an old disk somewhere
I have a character editor unlike the one on the above disk.

I futzed around the map editor for a bit on an emulator...the
Jester in the water in the castle prison doesn't say anything... =^)
