Is it then also possible that the vendor advertising an "accurate
durable scimitar of might" might actually be trying to flog you some
rusty worn-out old thing? that's not even magical?
I have not yet tried running a vendor, so I have no idea whether these
labels are placed by the player himself or whether they are
automatic....
If so, then I guess that Arms Lore and Item Identification will be
advisable/invaluable if you ever plan on buying something from a vendor.

I'd also urge caution to anyone buying reagents from vendors. A
friend of mine thought up this little scam:
You put lumps of 10 black pearl in a bag on your vendor and price them
at 90 gold per lump. Every 5th lump, you price at 900 gold. When
people come along to buy and check the price of a single lump, they
are likely to see "90 gold".
If the poor fool then accidentally clicks the high priced lump, or
they just buy 5 lumps without checking all the prices first, you will
likely be "quids in". Check before you buy!
Cheers,
Rob

It's magical property will always appear when you single-click it. That's one
thing they cannot fake. For the rest, it's proprties and condition, you Must
have Item Identification and Arms Lore, and keep trying these until successful,
or you may be buying a Forified Indecently Accurate Scimitar of Vanquishing
which is actually just dime store stuff, or about to break when you hit a bunny
with it.
This is one of the ways outside thieves get you, because you cannot Hide while
doing either of those skills (Hiding makes it imposible to snoop you, and if
snooping is not done then makes it impossible to steal from you). So you spend
extended periods of time standing out of town by vendors, II'ing and AL'ing to
see if an item is worth the 5000 gp price, and some thief comes along and
steals your hair dryer, then runs for the protection of the guard zone.

Hiding does not make snooping impossible.
If you have already been snooped, your pack is on lastobject.
If not, when you speak, your paperdoll can be pulled and your pack
snooped.

It's very possible. In fact, on a vendor just north of the Britain
cemetery on Ches there's a vendor that sells totally bogus items
(Halberd of Power advertised which is really a Durable, Accurate
Halberd, things like that).

I nearly doubled over laughing. In my opinion if anyone is dumb enough to
actually agree to that deal they deserve to be ripped off.
Just goes to show you how dishonest some vendors can be.

yes, this is one of the biggest rip offs in the game... players
deliberately naming items incorrectly... never buy from avendor unless you
Item Id it and then Arms Lore it... A Halberd of Vanq isnt much use if it is
"Falling apart"...

This is why I am starting a merchant guild on Catskills. We
only accept merchants who do not use deceptive methods, and merchants who
use deceptive methods are kicked out. Thus when you see someone walking
around in GOM, Guild of Merchants, you know you will get a fair deal.
Obviously we will get a better clientele.

I'm not sure he intended to cheat anyone
I think he's using his vendor as a bank. He
prices it high so no one will buy the gold.
