What skill in lockpicking does it require to pick dungeon chests?
Also.. Where can you train this skill? I don't see any thieves than
train it.

Thanks.

In my experience on SP the difficulty of the chest did not matter. However,
it did matter when it came to breaking picks. Easier chests don't break
picks that often. And when I hit 90, it was slow going....but I did GM on a
chest I made with about 85 tinker.

Nothing better than NPC weaps and armor. Ringmail sleeves and long
swords, that kind of junk.

Its 83.6 from memory, he says at 83.6 with Shannon. Less for boxes.
Unfortunately, theres also the traps....50 detect hidden needed to
even start training in remove traps apparently. And DH is a rather
hard skill to raise honestly I've found.

I've found I can open most town chests, and have had fun taking a fair
amount of armour from some chests in Serpents hold - only been
guardkilled twice so far :).

I basically just used a throwaway character to make a basic locked box
and just trained from zero to 81.8 so far - some thieves guildmasters
have it apparently, but I got sick of looking for the right one - the
one in Britain didnt have lockpicking and wouldnt train me in it
(maybe I spelled the skill wrong come to think of it?). Probably cost
me an extra 1000 or so so no biggie. So far my impression is that the
level of the box has very little to do with skill gain - seems to be
the same rate whether its one harder than I can open, or one I cant.

The small guard tower next to brit bank by the bridge also has two
chests that I cant open yet. Whats in them? Anything good? I'm

I just want to be able to open my other 2 lvl 3 maps. I was very

Yeha I think its just faster because you dont have to relock the box
again. I could be wrong - only up to 83 so far after all. Cuold be
the different server helepd too - I do much better in Skara Brae than
Brit, for most of my treasure hunting skills..

I trained lockpicking from a thief guildmaster on chesapeake in the
basement of the Artist's guild near the Britain Bank *before* the last patch.
They will *not* advertise that they teach it, you just have to ask "blah
teach lockpicking". I assure you, I did it recently, but prior to the
patch. It did work then, and it probably works now.

You have to steal it with the steal skill - cant just pick it up.

I have a whopping great 8 or so in stealing and was quite surprised at
how successful I was. My karma is dropping tho.... :)

I think it used to, but recently i Found that there were some chests that i
couldnt open with 99.9. Only with 100 could I open them consistently. maybe
soemthing to do with daylight also.

Point out the chests you can't get into. My picker has 93 now, but i
didn't go picking until i had 92. I have opened the chests in the
Balrons rooms, LL rooms and umm...Evil mage tower rooms in t2a. So
point out the chest i can't get into.

Slipknot, eagerly awaiting your post.

The crates in fixed locations have variable picking difficulty. What happens
is, let's say the crates have a difficulty range of 70-90 first time you
pick them. When the crates reset, they may have a range of 70-95. Now you
won't be able to pick the 95 difficulty level crate, but since you pick the
others they now get reset and another makes it into the 95 difficulty range.

What also happens is maybe a GM lockpick comes through the same dungeon and
opens everything in it. So now the crates all reset to 70-90 or 70-95
difficulty level again and you are back in business.

So IMO, unless you are on the same shard and no one has picked the chest,
you will not get it. Since Austin got into this one when he reached GM, it
is essentially gone for now.

It won't. I am at 95 and there are 3 chests in Covetous that I can't
open.

I'm intrigued as to what is in them.

Has anyone found anything good in any dungeon crates? I hear of people
getting magic weapons and what have you but all I find is ordinary
armour and gold.

Also, in Wrong, I found a treasure room where you go through the
teleporter into the maze. They were all open and empty so, presuming
some one had done them, I made a rune. I have been back 4 times over the
last week and there has never been anything in them. Are they always
empty or am I just being beaten to them after each respawn?

The chests in the center of Destard 1 have magic armor and weaps. So do
the chests in Shame 3 by the tower. I'm sure there are more.

Some chests always appear to be empty, just as some locks cannot be
picked. The latter is the more annoying. I'm GM lockpicker and can't get
into some chests (I get a message about "you cannot see how this lock
works" or something similar).

Maybe you need detect hidden?

Stratics says can use detect hidden to open high level treasure chest
with a lower lockpicking skill.

I'm on LS, i've *never* come across a chest that i couldn't pick. I've
seen one of the 'you can't figure that out' chests...I've run through
covetous a bit, i could pick all the chests i tried, but most had crap
in them. So maybe there are some, but well see first sentence. I
usually got for the high level chests, 400 plus gold. Shame PEs,
Bloods, Deceit LL room. T2A, Balron room.

Maybe it is shard specific. I had a buddy tell me, get to 92 THEN go
out. I've had no problems. I almost always break picks on the harder
chests, but they do open eventually.

I confess, i don't run around covetous alot.

OK, those are spawned chests and they all open pretty easily. The fixed
position ones are the tough ones, they *NEVER* have gold in them, only page
1-8 scrolls, maybe orc mask, non magical armor and weapons.

Something you may want to try, go to Castle British. If you head to the SE
corner or the compound before you enter the castle. There is a pickable door
you can see with COT enabled. Go upstairs in that area and try picking the
fixed barrels in that corner of the keep. That is a fairly well known area
and I think that is the toughest corner. What will happen is one of two
things; You will either find them all opened or you will break more then a
few picks on the ones that aren't opened yet.

I only looked at them with an 83ish lockpicker and ended up not being able
to open any in that corner. I will check it out with a higher level
lockpick, but probably not today.

There are 3 spawn chests that i can not open at 95 picking still. 1 in
the balron room, 1 in the gargoyle closet. 1 in shame 4.
