I popped in UO after about a year away from it and found that my adept
swordsman is just Mage and Archer fodder. So I decided to fight fire
with fire and turn my swordsman into an archer. Now I need to know what
I need to do to make an effective archer. What is the most important
stat for an archer and how do I raise it. Should I wear plate armor or
something else that does not effect dexterity (is dexterity important
and if so, how?) Should I use a heavy crossbow or another weapon?
Thanks in advance for answers and any other advice.
Brian

I remember reading that dexterity is the most important skill, followed by
strength for an archer.

Dex means how fast and accurate you are with the shot (along with your
archery skill of course) and Str means how heavy a bow can you hold since
crossbows and heavy crossbows are much much heavier than a normal bow.

A lot of arrows. And a bow of some kind. Yes, these things should help. :-)

Tactics. Pull dirty tricks (hit things when they not lookin, shoot and run),
anything to get a hit without taking a return strike.

Indestructible plate of invulnerability would seem adviseable.

Whatever has the strongest magic pluses.

Once i reached the 70s in my archery skill, i started shooting bone knights in Deceit
and Earth elementals in Shame (great place for archers : lots of rocks to cover you
when you are shooting those nasty earths). Those things boost your skill like crazy :
0.x for almost every hit you got in the beginning... i jumped my points in the 80s,
now i'm at 92.6 and ofcourse i don't gain that much anymore. Spent a fortune on bolts
though, thats the downside ...
