i was just wondering if the item you use to mine
like a pickaxe or shovel, is any more effective at
mining then other items. or are they all the same
chance that you will find ore?

TIA

I'm pretty sure they are all the same, just that you can equip a pickax,
which means the mine thieves can't steal it (at least, not without
killing you first...).

They're all the same.

They are the same in function, but in the big picture of mining equipment
they differ slightly.

1) As Chris pointed out, you can equip a pickaxe which prevents anyone from
stealing it. A shovel just sits in your backpack.

2) You can make shovels. There is a long used system of carrying a set of
tinker tools and keeping 4 (or more now) ingots in your pack from a smelt.
If your shovel breaks, you simply make another shovel instead of having to
carry heavy spare shovels or pickaxes.

3) A pickaxe can be used as a weapon.

4) Shovels are much cheaper. 14gp compared to a pickaxe at 21-34gp (I
forget).

Good luck.

Shovels also weigh half what a pickaxe does, and we know how much
miners are obsessed with extra weight. BTW - could we get some
decency laws in the cities? The way these miners pound rocks and haul
ore in their underwear is just... inappropriate.

First thing to do is exactly what you said you are doing.

Find a good public forge somewhere close to mountains, or in them if at
all possible. It'll probably be your main area... so you don't have
to search for a new one each time. Avoid the North Britian mine...
also, avoid any spot north of Minoc. PK Deathzones.

Secondly, make a macro button that does useskill-hiding and last object
at the same time.

Always, always use this key while using your shovel or tongs.

Always be aware of your surroundings. If anyone that you don't know
enters the area, remain hidden and don't move until the person begins
mining or leaves. A pk will *never* mine his own ignots... they're all
looking to take them off of you. If they are out killing, they probably
won't take long to leave. They tend not to hang out at the spot since a
miner just ariving won't have the ignots they're after... just one
leaving.

Don't set your ore on the ground... carry it to the forge every time you
hit your weight limit. It's much safer.... aside from the ore thieves
that sometimes hang out at the forge hoping to outclick you and smelt it
off the ground, leaving a big pile of ore next to you kind of defeats
the purpose of hiding every time.

When you go to blacksmith, weapons are good for increasing your skill...
since they take less ignots to create. However, the tradeoff is you'll
make about 2 gold per ignot instead of 5. Stratics has a good list of
what to make at what skills for armor. That still works, and will gain
you both money and skill... just be prepared to mine longer.

Always save at least 4 ignots to make a new shovel, in case the one
you're using breaks just as you make it back to mine.

Thats about all I can really think of... If you're just in it for the
money, you might want to stick to mining. Those in it for GM blacksmith
and the makers mark (like myself) will pay a fortune to escape the
tedium of mining.

If you're after the makers mark.. just be aware that it takes a *huge*
investment of time to get there... before long you'll be praying to
any god you can think of for a skill increase each and every time you
head to the forge :P~

I read in stratics that it was 51 ores - but have never had the inclination to
check. Buy a set of tinker tools and 25 tinkering - and just make your own
shovels - it weighs less than carrying 3 or 4 shovels around and is generally
more convenient.
From personal experience - I'm wondering if thats the average - as it does
seem to vary (which may be entirely psychological =P )for me.

It's 51 ore. I always get 102 ingots from each shovel and it's cheaper to
buy them from the tinker at 14gp than use 4 ingots (which sell at 6) to make
one.
