I've played UO almost a year and never seen these before .... so pardon my
ignorance but what's with these Dread Spiders at the Crossroads in Napa? We
got some reports that they had killed a number of adventurers so nothing
daunted, we mobilized whatever guild members we could muster and went to
Investigate. We nailed the first one coming in from Skara Brae and it nearly
handed us our heads! . We killed the second one up towards the Brigand camp
on the Yew road - this time it did kill one of us - luckily we had the
foresight to bring a couple of Resurrect scrolls along :) I was lucky
enough to get the credit for the kill both times (here's where 100 DEX
counts)!

Nasty things they are - high mana, high spell level magic hurling deadly
poisoning arachnids blocking the main highways - I mean it wasn't safe for
even your friendly neighborhood PKer to stroll the highway ... hmmm come to
think of it, maybe we should have left them alone? I wonder if they will
spawn there regularly?

So tread carefully lest you tread on one of it's lesser cousins and a Dread
Spider comes looking for you.

Dread Spiders only spawn with treasure map treasure. Someone probably
dug up a box and either grabbed the loot and recalled, or got toasted
- leaving the treasure guardians to terrorize the countryside.

To sum it up shortly, Dreadspiders are the equivelent of a Liche Lord
in the spider form.

They're not that storng. I fought 2 by myself, "straight up" -
ie they weren't being trapped, i didn't cast blades, or EVs, or
anything like that :) It was me, and the 2 dread spiders.

If I did that w/ 2 LL's, Iwouldn't be alive today :)

Ahhhh - that makes sense, any idea what level treasure maps give rise to
these nasty beasts? So far we have only seen Earth Elementals and Liches
spawn - I think that was a level 3?

Yep - that sounds about right - that would certainly equate to the damage
they inflicted and the mana resevoir - of course, luckily Lich Lords don't
have deadly poison bites :)

I remember that message. Wasn't that before they "fixed" poisoning?

Indeed I did (and no - I'm outta nails), most of my characters on various
shards are from TV or radio shows, BlueBottle is from the Goon show, Dingoes
Kidneys is from the HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy (some reference to
Vogons and the Bugblatter Beast of Traal), Captain Haddock is from Tin Tin,
Quatermass - is a dated SciFi scientist and my wife created a GM Smith
character called Ummagumma (Pink Floyd album).

It's kind of random...

I went on a Dundee/Shade/Janey/everone in the world treasure hunt, and
one spawned 1/2 way through.

They said that was a level 3 chest. (1000 gp in the chest for every
level it was... 3000 in this one)

It was linked to one of the items, not in the initial spawn, luckily :)

When did they "fix" poisoning, and how "fixed" is it? :P

What I didn't take into account was that they seem to poison now :P
That's a bit rougher :)

Well in our case it was from a Wyvern and was told they typically give
level 3 maps - we didin't get to find out what was in there as Dinsdale is
only an adept lockpicker with so-so detect hidden breaking about 50 picks
then the chest decayed :( So other than the initial spawn of elementals -
we're not sure what would have spawned next had we managed to open it. We
have a much better picker/DHer in the team now so we should be able to crack
the next one.

A couple weeks ago. Everything under the sun now poisons you on every
hit.

They really need to fix it to remove the "fix". :P~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I killed a dragon by casting 2 poison spells. You can kill a corpser
with a single poison spell too. Really works great, I will take being
poisoned 2 or 3 times a fight with magic using monsters in order to use
poison like this myself. Poison is and always has been one of my
favorite town spells for jerk thieves, it is even better now.
