Almost looks like the only ones that will be guard whacked in Trammel are
bards and tamers.
I would think they would change this at sometime but who knows?

Before the days of player made colored armor, there were many color
armor vendors run by players who collected it from NPC blacksmiths.
Very dark black was one of the possible colors. However, since it
isn't as good protection wise as player made GM shadow armor, there
isn't much call for it these days. (I had a colored armor vendor once
upon a time.)

Depends just how orange the leather is--studded leather has a more mahogany
tone than regular leather. (Or did you already check that possibility?)

One npc type wears these items (don't remember offhand, sorry), and
folks kill them for it. They're not really rare, just that most folks
don't know about this.
If you're interested, you should be able to find mention of this at
http://www.markeedragon.com/ go to "forums/rares" and search back a
bit.
Folks chop up the green ranger armor to get green cut leather (they're
making their own "rares", since most won't sacrifice a piece of ranger
armor that sells for upwards of 10k). If you tailor green leather, you
don't get green leather armor, you get regular colored armor, so beware.
I don't know what you'd get if you cut up the orange gorget you refer
to, but I assume that if you got orange cut leather, and if you tailored
that orange cut up leather, you'd get regular colored armor, just like
with the green ranger armor.
I suppose folks could cut up the orange phoenix armor to get orange cut
leather, but since that sells for at least 10x that of ranger armor, few
are that foolish... errr, I mean, few are that wealthy ;)

I have a set of Darkest Rose full plate from a long time ago, I heard it was
possible to re-smelt the armor into ingots and then make an exceptional set
in this new colour.
I bought from a Vendor just East of Britain, near the river, was that
yours?......
Atlantic shard
I doubt it. When I smelt store bought items, the message returned is
something along the lines of 'nice try matey' and you get only 1 ingot
for it.
It might work for something really old, but I wouldnt want to gamble
on it with something irreplaceable.

No, my vendors have all been on Verity Isle along the south edge.
Anyhow, unless a bug was involved, when you smelt NPC colored armor,
it just become plain iron ingots. Hmmm...my vendor predated the
ability to smelt metal too. I'm an oldbie. :)
Some of those NPC colors (which are still available from the NPCs) are
nicer IMHO than the newer player armor colors.

That might be Helga's vendor shop? I can't for the life of me think of
her sister's name, but she has a GM smith in the area you describe.
