I had to sit up and babysit some servers, so I fired up my UO and (using
the built in macro function) set up a last object and hiding macro.
Basically I wanted to train my new mage up in combat skills. It took
about 7 hours but I got all 4 combat skills up to a decent level and my
strenght had gone from 10 to 25 which tickled me pink. The problem was
I expected that hiding would raise my dex some. It raised it 3 points,
and I figured okay, I can live with that, hiding must not have gone up
that much. I logged off then logged back on and noticed my Novice Mage
title had changed to Jouneryman Rouge! WTF, I thought, so I check my
skills and sure enough my Hiding was at 61.5! It has started at 0.
What I don't understand is why my dex only went up 3 points? I figure
for a 61 point gain, I should gain more then that? Anyone have an info
on this or is the stats process broken on Cheseapeke again?

Well I *might* have an explanation for this. I had begun working on the
standard "hit the dummy with different weapons" thing to get some skills
and add some str before wandering outside town. In the past it seemed
that after training most combat skills to near 25 would also add a decent
amount of points to str.. only this time it wasn't happening. I also
began having a quick loss of stamina while running. Now I haven't played
in MONTHS so I didn't know if it was a new thing since I played (it was)
so I paged a GM about the stamina and str gains.

A councellor showed up and explained that stat gains don't really start to
kick in now until a skill reaches the 60 mark. This was done to combat
the standard macro all night thing on a dummy.

So.. that may be what you are running into. Now, I've managed to get
swords over 82 but still haven't seen tremendous gains in str since I
passed 60 so who knows.

This just makes it all the more necessary to start every character by macroing
all combat skills to 25, then pick one and focus on it with all the rabbits and
timberwolves you can kill.

As always, they are penalizing the new player, new character, and hading ever
greater advantages to the jerks who went before.

Just keep at it. Slow, but it will work. Might also do some LJing and
carpentering (we do need some shields). Macro Arms Lore. That works for
strength, but don't get carried away. Near the skill cap, stop it.

I absolutely agree. If I hadn't gotten so annoyed with the pk situation a
year ago and had never quit for 11 months I'd have a killer character now.
It just give more of an advantage to those who have been around since the
beginning.

It's starting to come along, I managed to gain 2 or 3 pts of str last
night in the training session so I'm happy with that. Since this was an
existing char he's got some investment into tailoring, magery so I'm not
sure how much I want to spread him around. I'd really like to get magery
built up well. I think it could be interesting to carry just enough
reagents for 2 or 3 energy bolts.. could change the tone of a fight and
really doesn't leave much for looting. If the spells fail, they fail and
we just continue to pound on them.
