You won't help people because they can't or won't speak English while
you're playing?
When's the last time any of them refused to help you simply because you
won't speak Japanese or German while they're playing.
Why do so many people have trouble with the fact that UO is an
international, not American, game? Who cares what language people speak?
What difference does it make?
Terry Wilcox
arrogant it may be, though there are a few of these 'forigners' that i'm
friends with, it's the ones that refuse to speak english when playing,
just so others dont know what their saying (or at least they think we
dont know what their saying. my german's rather rusty, but i did get a B
in highschool =) basically the one's i'm talking about are the ones that
will hold a conversation with you untill the rest of their clan shows
up, then only speak german or japanese to each other. if you dont want
us to know what your saying, then whisper [; ] but when i pick up
phrases such as blackplate and energy vortex in parts of your
conversation, and me or someone i know is the only one wearing
blackplate armor, then most certanally DO NOT expect any help from me
whatsoever.

I play on Napa, I live on the West coast of Canada, and perhaps because of the
time I play, I encounter many Japanese players. I have always found them to be
very courteous and creative. One time in Shame, I was watching two Japanese
players fighting a couple of snakes when a pk came through. Both started to
run, one escaped followed by the pk, and the other died by poison. The ghost
took off. I grabbed her stuff and went outside waiting for her return after
being ress'd. I noticed she had a magic crossbow, my weapon of choice, but
she was a warrior. When she got back, I returned her stuff, accepted her
thanks gallantly, and decided to ask if she might want to sell her xbow.
me.......would you like to sell your magic cross bow ?
her.......crossbow ?
me....... yes
her........you like ?
me........yes
her........thank you
me........no, can I buy your crossbow ?
her........crossbow ?
me.........yes, can I pay you for it ?
her.........you like ?
At this stage I figured that crossbow just was not destined to be mine, unless
I could learn Japanese very quickly. When all of a sudden my trade window
opened with the crossbow in her window, with her button checked. I asked,
me........can I give you money ?
her........you like ?
me........yes
her........thank you
After 30 seconds of silence, I checked the button. Thanked her very much, she
said, " Thank you ", and wandered off.
I think it was a gift. :-)

The WWW is invented in Switzerland. Does that mean that all homepages

My point was, that it would be nice with a little tolerance. When I
speak with my danish friends in UO, we speak danish. It's a lot faster
to express yourself in your native language. I'm so privileged, that I
can make myself understandable in other languages aswell, so I can
communicate with all the english and german speaking people to. I
don't speak a word japanese, but if some japanese player comes up to
me saying "heal", I would understand what he wanted, and I can't see
why I shouldn't help him? It isn't a crime to be unable to speak
english!
The same goes for you. I will treat you as a friend until proven an

If the thing your complimenting is not utterly ridiculous, i.e. saying
to the CEO of Mitsubishi, "I like your corporation...", it's a cultural
faux pas for them NOT to offer you the item you compliment. It's supposed
to make you happy, and makes them look nice/humble/honorable/whatever. In
most cases, if you really like something, and you let them know it, it
will be very difficult to get away without them giving it to you.
However, it is also considered polite to take the gift, but later on
give a gift in return. Not saying "This was for <X>"... but pretending
it's just a gift out of the blue. That way both sides save face, and
everybody is happy. (Yeah, right :)
But they won't be allowed to complain if you decide to just cheat them

Actually, what the Ionian Greeks had was hardly more a democracy than republican
Rome. There are documents surviving from there showing discussions in which it
was pointed out that the real rulership had to put on a good show of letting the
people seem to have their influence. The Greeks were no more democratic that
was England after the Magna Carta. The Dutch state was kinda sorta less of a
rulership, being mainly concerned with rule by business and financiers. Same
for some of the Italian states, but no One Man One Vote. Certainly no right to
free speech, no right of assembly, and no right to hold public office.
I'm afraid we will just have to leave the invention of something like modern
democracy with the Americans. Then all of Europe slowly began to topple in the
same direction, but they just had to have that weird throwback, the Parliament.

I have this problem with the language formerly known as English.
You see, I don't understand terms like 'sup?' and 'lol'. They're not
English. They seem to be from some Americanized version of English. I find
that the vast majority of obnoxious PKs speak this language.
It must be some kind of code.
English also has rules for punctuation and capitalization, so I'm having
some trouble understanding the post I'm replying to. Why don't these people
speak English correctly if they're going to claim to be English speakers?

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Internet, is that it was
planned. The Internet was indirectly created back in the '60s by the US
government during the Cold War. The government was tired of mailing magnetic
tapes back and forth between computers. So they decided to devise a way to
link computers together using cables.
Actually, it started out as a simple packet-switching network called
ARPANET, a design which the internet utilizes today. It was created by
the US Department of Defense as a method for continually transmitting /
receiving data even if nodes go down (i.e. a nuclear war). ARPANET then
spread to Universities in the early 70's. It was not until 1990 that
NSFNET took over ARPANET, and the rest is history. :)

Nope sorry. It was designed so the military could talk to each each
other whent he bombs flew. Universities were tossed on their so their
"research" departments could stay in touch with each other and
possibly their "funding sources" Give you three guesses where the
money came from.

The WWW is not the Internet. Tim Berners-Lee came up with the HTTP protocol
in Switzerland. He's responsible for the WWW, which is responsible for the
modern day popularity of the Internet.
I guess that just proves the "but it was made here" argument is as stupid

This is correct, although Arpanet split off from the more collegiate based
Internet a while ago, There were still a lot of gateways between them.
Actually, if anyone wants proof that it started in America, look at the
domain
structure. This distinction is dissapearing these days, but other countries
have dns names ending with a different two characters. (ca for Canada,
de for Germany, etc) This happened when other countries were pulled in.
The US, being the original, doesn't use these, though the WERE created.
This is NOT to say that America did all the work!!! Many other countries
had their own versions of the Internet, and were just hooked in. The
Internet
is an amalgamation of a LOT of networks these days.
BTW, I think that when a game is played on the Internet, the we Americans
should just learn to LIVE with other people not speaking English! We don't
own the Internet, and this is more of an Internet issue than an OSI one! If
you
don't like it, learn another language! Europe has been doing this for
years,
but we've avoided it because we're so big, our population is isolated from
non-English speaking people. Well, we've led the way in Global network
communications, we have to become open minded enough to accept the
consequences rather than expecting everyone to adapt to US!

Well said Terry.
What a wonderful opportunity that would be to really role-play. Imagine
yourself the healer, and you've found a wounded warrior, babbling in an
unknown tongue, in the woods. Would you just kick him in the side and walk
away leaving him to die, cursing him for not making himself understood, as
the previous poster indicated he deserved? Hell no! You'd go ahead and heal

I disagree. I would think that the USA has the highest number of pk's per
capita in the game. I believe there is a cultural component to pk's, and their
behavior most closely reflects a segment of American youth. You don't have to
see the language they speak, one indication of their country of origin is
inherent in their names.
I was about to post a similar statement. I can't believe this thread even

A certain similarity in with ancient Athens in which the slaves and women
did not get the vote. However, contrary to the Masters suggestions, there
were popular Assemblies (We still have records from them) and the level of
democracy (within the restraints mentioned) was very high as the population
was relatively low and the land area small. There were of course many
abuses as there are in modern "democracies." Just like the USA, Athens was
not to particular about democracy in regard to its colonies and allies.
The idea of attributing modern "democracy" to any nation is absurd in
extreme. Bourgoisie democracy was, primarily, the product of the
revolutionary bourgoisie struggliing to overturn feudal rule. Of course
once they had achieved the goal of overthrowing feudalism, democracy has
been limited to what is forced out of them - it is necessary to have the
support of a larger section of society and bourgois democracy can play a
useful role in drawing in broader elemnets of society behind bourgois rule.
well, that's my take on it at least.

Probably. Stupid non-French speaking Americans are ruining the game
now. It blows me away how totally insensitive people can be towards
people who don't speak the same language as themselves. Unless you get
started really young, second languages are not easy to learn. I taken
three years of Spanish classes and I still can not communicate very well
with it except in written form.
One day, I was in Ocllo and some Spanish players happened to walk
through a gate just as it was closing. They had no idea what had
happened and I was able to pick up from their conversation that they
didn't know any magic. I asked them, in Spanish, if they needed to get
back to another city. They responded that they would like to go back to
Vesper. They were also totally surprised to find someone who was willing
and able to talk with them. They insisted that I must be of Spanish or
Hispanic origin. I assured them that I was American and had taken a few
classes in Spanish. They were very thankful and tried to offer me 1000
gold for gate back home. I, of course, refused, but the entire
experience made all the classes worthwhile.
It's not easy being in a world where you don't understand what
people are saying. (even a game world) I certainly wouldn't have the
guts to attempt it. I say give people some credit and don't be so quick
to say, "My way or the hiway." You might just meet a friend.

That'll surprise the English. Their Bill of Rights, from 1689, certainly
makes England look like a democracy. Parliament, an elected body, passes
the laws, to which the royal family are bound. That's a few years before
1776.
Your assumption that modern democracy == republic is just wrong.
Unless you define modern democracy as a two party system that allows the
two parties to maintain a stranglehold on power by passing laws that make
it nearly impossible for anybody else to win. Then the U.S. certainly
invented modern democracy.

Do typical americans tend to be isolationist linguists? Yes. All in all,
many (tho not all) americans tend to learn only english other than that
required by high schools and college.
But this "eastern/European is better" bullshit has got to stop.
The "eastern/European philosophy is better" American (!) attitude started
primarily during the 60's when American (american...western) ivory tower
scholars decided that western civilization was in decline and only by
embracing the love of buddha and the "beauty of Asia" could Americans hope
to gain salvation. Peace, love, buddha etc. et al ad nauseaum.
Homogeneity bias. Look it up.
Now, I will be the first to admit that American attitudes are less than
admirable...even shitty. But before we get off on this bullshit idea that
America is the shitpot of the universe, we need to stop romanticizing the
East and stop romanticizing Europe and start looking at some cold hard
facts.
1. China. China is a large part of the "eastern anti-western superiority"
East (it is a majority of the "Buddha love country"...research an atlas,
some history, and some population charts) and its ideas are far from
admirable. Political executions, human rights abuses and the complete and
overt political and social oppression of women and minorities barely touches
the tip of the iceberg of their "eastern" ideals. And it aint just the
Maoists, baby. It is centuries of Chinese tradition.
2. India. Ahh...the bastion of peace. They set off nukes (because they fear
Pakistan and...um...the peaceful "eastern philosophy" China) and more than
80% of the populous supported the decision. Other than that, India is
extremely caste oriented. Their caste system makes the southern USA
confederate states look like bastions of tolerance. I know. I have been
there.
3. Japan. One of the most caste oriented, racist oriented societies in the
world today. Their anthropologists simply refuse to believe that the
Japanese are genetically derived from ancient Korean and indigenous island
stock....against all evidence to the contrary. Japan's racism and caste
system is frightening. I have been there too. Imperialism didn't start in
the West, babe.
4. Dont even get me started on Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea and Cambodia.
5. Europe. Yeah, ok...Europeans know more languages than we do (and so do
the Eastern love societies.. um, at least those love-in members who can
afford a computer). But are Europeans better than Americans? Does knowing
French, English and/or German languages automatically lead to supreme
intelligence? "Gosh, they can speak two languages, so they must have a
monopoly on intelligence and civility." I dont think so. Again, look to the
Irish problem, ethnical problems in Spain, any number of ethnic conflicts in
the Balkans and Germany's barely controlled greed as they try to dominate
the new eastern European bloc. And dont forget the Swiss and their "neutral"
complicity in the Nazi war machine.
Multilinguism = superiority? I dont think so. . As any developmental
psychologist well tell you, learning languages as a child is easy, and these
"superior" people simply emphasize multilinguism early on. Americans don't.
Does this make Americans stupid? No. We just dont nationally support
multilingiusm.
Does America have some complicity in the spread of capitalism (and yeah,
greed) in the world? Yeah...and the problems grow wherever the complicity
grows. But for these countries and others, they did have the choice whether
or not to take part in the global economy and they chose to take part in the
greed. "No..no..dont give us money...it is against our philosopy..." Yeah,
right.
Of course, these "Americans talked us into it..we are not really greedy"
people can always say what the German people said for the 40 years following
Hitler ("oh, we didnt know anything about Auschwitz...that was the Nazi
party, not us! We are simply humble farmers. I thought those camps were ...
um... you know.. umm....") We all know it is bullshit. Greed and "I am
great, you are shit" is universal, babe.
So yeah...America has some serious serious problems re acknowledgement of
the outside world. And hell yeah, many Americans are greedy consumer
oriented money mongers. Understand, I am far from being a patriot or even an
apologist America's bullshit (dont even get me started on the native
americans or Vietnam).
But I will not for a minute fall for this other bullshit. As a PhD student
scientist in cognitive psychology, several of the stats oriented classes I
attend focus on the generalizability of American studies on other cultures.
What many of the statistical and methodological scientists have found is
that Americans ARE different from other cultures in some regards and exactly
the same in others. But the most conclusive proof from these essays points
out that almost ZERO of this difference comes from greed vs. peace,
democracy vs. love and Buddha harmony. Quite the contrary, actually. Most of
differences between cultures occurs due to relative levels of oppression
and/or societal constraint.
If you are not convinced, consider this....99% (an actual figure, I am not
making this up) of Chinese women are right handed. Right handed. 99%. Not
quite normal. I hope I dont need to explain to people how seriously this
deviates from the norm (sampled from several cultures, not just America).
To conclude...Many americans are assholes. But many nonAmericans are
assholes too. But of the people playing UO, most ARE americans therefore
increasing the probability that more than likely you will meet more American
assholes that nonAmerican assholes. But guess what...those multilingual
nonAmericans can be assholes too.
Dont give me this "Americans are assholes, everyone else is more
intelligent" bullshit. It is just that, bullshit.
But for you American assholes that feel like everyone should speak English
in your little UO game....you are also assholes. If the nonAmericans pay the
money, they should be able to speak whatever fucking language they want to
speak. And if you don't like it, you can go fuck yourself.
ARG! I know this fucking post isnt grammatically correct. It is just an
enraged rant.
This stuff just pisses me off. Sigh.

>Thank goodness for Uncle Spam!!!
Relax, Relax. *Invented* is the wrong word here, as the Internet
as we know it did not just pop into existence. It was developed
from and built around the structure of the US Department of
Defense's ARPAnet. The ARPAnet was created in the early
70's, and it remained the domain of VAX, UNIX, and AS/400
type machines for a long time.
Today all of the main backbones,
root DNS servers, etc. reside in the US, and are US sponsored
and controlled. Not to say that certain third world countries
like the UK don't have decent backbones of their own, but they
came much later and only after the Internet as we know it came
into being like 7 or 8 years ago or so.
When it comes right down to it, the US has poured tons of money
into developing the Internet into what it is now. Much much more
money and expertise has come from the US than all other
contributors combined. Thats why it pisses me off when I hear
some dope-smoking Amsterdam dwelling fuckwod spouts off
about how Europe played just as big of a part. It simply isn't true.
On the other hand, I think its great that the Internet gives me a chance
to talk to people from cultures I'll probably never get the chance to see
for myself. I'm not some big Xenophobic anti foreigner, and I think its
in the US's best interest to not be isolationist.
My final question, is if the US is just SOOOOOOOOOOOO shitty,
Americans are just SOOOOOOOOOO obviously useless, why
is it such a HUGE issue on the 'net? If the US just *obviously*
sucked, then there'd be no argument. I probably would not
get a single flame if I posted a message like RWANDA IS THE
SHITTIEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. Their country is fucked
and they know it.
bye
I've read every post in this argument and some of you make some very good
points on both sides of the discussion. Should America get more respect and
then it does? Absolutely. UO, although intended to be a multi-national
game, was created here in Austin, Texas, which last I looked was in the U.S.
Also, as long as the U.S. is seen as the world's "babysitter" it should get
more respect from other countries. Anytime something goes wrong in a
country, their leaders come crying to the president and the U.S. goverment
for help. And the U.S., more often than not, does help. Once however the
U.S. has helped that country, their leaders tell the U.S. to get it's butt
out of there without so much as a "thank you." Tell me that is the amount
of respect and gratitude the U.S. deserves.
On the flip side however, we American citizens should also respect other
cultures as they not only add something to the game of UO, but without some
of their influences, America would be a much different place than it is
today. This doesn't mean that they shouldn't speak English in UO--because
they should since it's a primarily English-speaking game--because it would
help them greatly in regards to player interaction. We shouldn't condemn
them though for their lack of multilinguial abilities though as most
Americans can't speak other languages anyway.
The vast amount of players in the game are in fact Americans, and just like
if you were going to another country, it is your responsibility to be able
to speak the language at least somewhat intelligently. If I went to live in
France I'd be expected to speak, understand, and write French--I wouldn't
demand that speak English just because I do. The same should be true for
foreign people coming to the U.S., and in a sense UO because it is a
primarily English speaking game full of Americans.
Oh and just so you know, I can speak, write and understand French, German,
and some Hebrew, although I forgot most of that after my Bar Mitzvah years
ago. :P

Actually only *ignorant* Americans would say something along those
lines. Most of the other Americans I associate with don't think like that.

>have real roads and VCRs and TV back in europe. Thats ignorant.
Did *everyone* you met in America ask you this, or just a couple of
idiots who had probably never even left their hometown?
You have to understand that because the US is so large, American
kids are really not going to encounter many people from other cultures,
like they do in Europe.
14 years ago was during the Cold War, and I
can tell you from experience, that the right wingers in this country

evil socialist-oriented countries like those in western europe are.
Eastern europe was considered a hundred times worse, so
its not surprising that a few ignorant people just lumped you in

>Hehehehe they also asked me if I惴 from west or east germany.
Thats a perfectly legitimate question, especially when the US Cold
War propaganda machine was in full effect. Americans just ate
that shit up about people defecting from Communist Bloc countries,
and typically thought that people escaped from East Berlin more
often than it really happened.

I agree with you there. But none of the Europeans I have met have led me
to beleive that they are inherently more informed or smarter.
To qualify myself, I'm going to mention all of the countries I have ever
been
to during various deployments during my tour in the USMC:
Sweden, England, Israel, Jordan, Bahrian, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia,
Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, Thailand, Korea, Phillipines, Malaysia, Singapore,

You know what I found in every single country I've been to, to one extent or

Every country I've been to, at a popular level, wants to be just like the

All I can say is thanks for not biting my head off. While I still hold to
the core issues raised in my post, I dont think I could have been more
juvenile in my choice of writing style and superfluous use of profanity.
When I woke up this morning I thought, "What the hell was I thinking?" and
dreaded reading responses to my juvenile rant. But the pressure has just
been building up for a while. I spent four years in college studying English
lit and I was constantly bombarded with this idea that western civilization
is the great Satan. And now that I am on the psychology PhD track, I find
its insiduous tendrils there as well. I just had to blow off some steam. And
I did so. Er...somewhat off topic too. Gad, I am going to be kicked from
this newsgroup.
But your point is well made and I thank you for replying in a mature manner.
I only wish I could say so much for myself. :P

So, what you're saying is that cowboy hats and boots are not
'normal' clothes?
It seems to me that your judging people as 'abnormal' and
out of society simply because they wear clothes that are
different from whatever freakish things you wear in
your state is extremely short-sighted and bigoted.

...but it's ok to make fun of us 'hicks' up north, is that it?
Just because some of us wear cowboy hats and boots. Why
don't you form a branch of the Klan up here so you can
persecute us 'abnormals' and to promote your Southern
'master race'. God. I'd hate to see what would happen
if you went to Africa, where some people wear things that would
be considered even more unacceptable by your myopic standards.
Why don't you try being just a LITTLE more tolerant of people
who have not assimilated every tiny bit of your culture?

Yes! We are MIGHTY!!

I happen to be a ridiculous person. I do try not to be offensive
though. Naturally, it's impossible when addressing a large group.
There's always someone that's just BOUND to take offense.

I live in Dallas. Howdy.

LOL! ("all the time"?!)
I don't *ever* wear cowboy hats or boots. And I don't drive a
pick-em-up truck, neither.

Yes! They are MIGHTY, too!!

That would be "me" and "my home".

Lighten up. I love Texas.

Are we talking large in population or large in physical size. I live in
Canada, second largest (in physical size) nation in the world, and
everybody I knew as a kid was pretty aware that Europe is civilized. For
population, on my trips to China everybody was well aware of the fact that
Europe is civilized.
In fact, America is the only place I've ever met people who actually
thought Canadians live in igloos. Honestly.

What do you consider American culture and norms? The Canadian Football
League is much older then the NFL, yet most Americans would consider our
league to be emulating theirs. If you look at television, how many popular
American shows are remakes of popular British shows? Remember the British
invasion, when Beatles-like groups sprung up all over the U.S.?
So are other countries emulating the U.S. or is the U.S. emulating them?
Both.
Of course, how many other countries want carjackings, school massacres, and
neo-Nazis?
