I'm thinking of starting one just to see IF I can role play it a bit,
and to see the reactions of the general player base when I do.

Jacko is wrong. You CAN NOT steal from players with low karma. You CAN
steal from grey red orange green and permaflagged players. Dont bother
with 50 hiding take either 50 magery or 50 healing depending on
whether you wish to fight with melee or with magery.

Actually, hiding goes up quite quickly so I really think that it's not
worth it to waste 50 starting points on it. I'd start with 50 magery
- enough to recall. Also, you can't steal from players with low karma
if you're not in the thief's guild. Only greys, and reds, (and greens
and oranges if you're in a PC guild).

Having recently developed a thief......
I find that the best start is to go with 40 str, 15 int, 10 dex.
Stealing 50, magery 49, whatever you want 1.
I have discovered that the simplest way to gain stealing is to find a friend
who is also making a thief. Join a guild in common with him, so that you can
steal from each other, without being in the thieves guild. Then each take
about 8 bags with 5 individual gold coins in them. The bags weigh in at 6
stones each including the bag. You can macro random stealing on each other in
a house, or in an isolated area if you think that is safe. Seems to gain
fairly quick, about 1 point per hour of doing this. I have not gotten past 70
yet, so I don't know how much it slows down. Oh, also while you are macroing
stealing, dbl click your friends backpack, and then hold down last object
button with something while the steal macro runs, this will gain you tons of
snooping... like gm in about 10 hours. Karma will be at a really low level
after just a few hours of this though, so don't expect people to talk to you
outside of town much. You will get to 100 dex very quickly doing those
skills. I also recomend hiding and stealth for the budding thief, both skills
are very fun to use while being chased for something. You should get both up
above 90. Next, of course you will need str, cuz no good UO character has
less than 90 hp. Recomend, using animal taming, or fishing. Fishing is
really good, cuz it is a dex skill as well, and if you get it really high, you
can get treasure maps while you are not out swiping stuff : )
email me if you have any other questions, or macro needs, I am the macro
master.

I resent that remark! ;) My Inscriber has only 20 hps and does really
well making Recalls, Marks, and Magic Reflects.... 8p
20 str, 35 int, 10 dex, 50 magery, 50 stealing. Do an escort. While you are
doing the escort, just walk vs run while snooping their pack. Rob them in
the wilderness 1/2 way to their destination.
You will end up with 150-800 gold depending on the type of escort and 15-20
snooping, plus a dex or two. Buy a hat for 40 int, recall scroll for spell
book, about 3 mark scrolls, and every gate scroll you can get your hands on.
Always carry an unmarked rune on you and a mark scroll at this stage. Since
you are hanging out in escort areas, everytime mage type cast a gate, JUMP
IN! Eventually you will get to Ocllo, Serpent's Hold, and NuJelm. Cove and
Minoc are two other hard ones to get escorts to, but you can walk to those.
You don't really want to gate the escorts directly to their destinations.
You want to mostly get them off the isles i.e. gate them off Ocllo to the
Yew or Jehlom Moongate, and walk them so you can rob them. If you are in a
hurry after you rob them, then gate them to their destination after you have
picked them clean.
I have tried this on several shards, never had any trouble making enough for
a small house after a single marathon weekend doing it this way.
By the time the weekend is over, you no longer need to buy mark scrolls
since magery is about 60ish, stealing is the same. Int will be high enough
from all the spells so you don't need a hat. Snooping should be pretty high
too, it is a time saver since you will have to start using targetted
stealing after 60ish skill at stealing for it to move it up.
Try to only bank in out of the way places as people around the major cities
will check your perma flagging. Never go to the main Brit bank unless you
have died just before that.
Money's no object, since I'm rich with my other characters <was a GM
smith before the mass skill gain>. This is mainly a "fun" character
that I'm going to try to roleplay a bit.
Good example, was playing a bit and tried to steal from a NPC in
Vesper...of course I got caught and whacked....so, after I went back
blue and ressed, I ran back to the guards "pouting" and claiming "it
was only a few arrow..I didn't deserve that". Went on in this vein for
a few minutes, with some people actually telling me the guard wouldn't
answer <g>. Finally, with a "Lets see how YOU like it!" I drew my
newbie dagger and attacked the guard <g>.
hehe..a prime example of how roleplaying can make anything fun, even
being snooped. That guy probably thought you was another jerk thief,
but when you went into the spiel, he played along and actually had
fun, AND I bet he remembers it for awhile...more than he would just
whacking you and walking away <g>.
