Okay, not really - but I thought it would sound better...

Hiya all! :)

I've been back from my three months in Glasgow (okay, ten weeks in
Glasgow, two in Grange over Sands, and one in Rickmansworth) for more
than two weeks now, and I've realised that I *do* have enough time to
check out RGCUD every now and then - I'll probably be in semi-lurker
mode from now on, but I'm around. (It's a weird feeling to come back and
see that you've been mentioned in a thread that has 'depressing' in its
subject header...)

So, what have I been doing the last three months? Well, I've written my
final thesis on Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath, which I enjoyed very much,
in a dark, morbid and often worrying way. I've been to the cinema at
least once a week (I even went to an open discussion with Stephen
Frears, which was fascinating and fun). I went to the Edinburgh
Festival, which was great fun. I visited my half-sister and her husband
- and their baby, finding out that the little tykes aren't as bad as I
always thought. (I won't rush out to get one of my own, though.) I
bought too many books which I then had to carry across Europe because I
was too cheap to have them all sent back to Switzerland. I drunk some
single malt, but not much. I bought Baldur's Gate II, Diablo II, Alpha
Centauri (cheap) and Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. I moved flat when I
got back, and I now live in a brilliant flat with wooden floors, high
ceilings, a huge balcony and a coffee machine! Wahay! I bought a Voodoo5
(I like it, so GeForce users, hold back your flames unless they're
entertaining and/or original).

Since I'm fairly close to finishing my studies now, I have to start
thinking about what I'll do afterwards; I've got a job offer from my
linguistics professor (the one I wrote the UDIC paper for) but I'm not
sure whether I want to get stuck in linguistics rather than literature.
I'll definitely do another play before I finish next summer, though -
Caryl Churchill's 'Top Girls'. (I saw an incredible production of the
play in Edinburgh, and it looks as if I've already got a cast
together...) Oh, I'll also be teaching more than can be good for me, and
earning a fair bit of money. In other words: I won't run out of things
to do.

So, how have you all been? Any big changes on the group? How many
momentous events in 'Phid's life have I missed, and do I really want to
know? (Not in too much detail, in any case.) Are people on rgcud still
discussing the relative merits of Al Gore and Dubya? Is the moon made of
green cheese, and if yes, where will I get my Wensleydale from?

Okay, that's about it. Hope you're all doing fine,

Missed you!

Ach. What aspects did your thesis deal with?

My memory is crap for names - but that's the playwright who wrote
`Copenhagen`, no? I really liked that play...

I read that as `not too much` when I first read this post - there's no
such thing as having drunk too much single malt. :) Did you get your
claws on any Talisker? Mmm, warmth... ;)

Woo! Sounds nice!

I moved too, in prep for my second year at university - I'm now in a
bedsit-style box room... very studenty! The carpet sticks to the floor
and I've dismantled all of the furniture and piled it in a heap in one
corner so that I have room for my (new) computer and my guitar.

Big changes in the group? Hmm...

Well...

A couple of minor-event level flamespats, lots of
music/Linux/philosophical-type discussions.

Attentive is gonna be a daddy, Paulon's been a bit sick lately. Moa went
to university, and after much parental persuasion, has finally found a
way to circumvent the hideous everyday travelling he had to endure
before. He left for a little while back there, but now he's back. As we
thought he might. :)

The return of the enchanting Lady Jane is something I hold particularly
dear to my heart. Also, Eidolon is back, and posting when he has a spare
moment... which is nice. Claus is taking an unhealthy interest in seeing
Musashi, Paulon and myself meet, presumably for some sort of bombastic
three-in-a-weyr dragon/elf/dragon orgy-type situation.

Oh, and contemplating Musashi further, his identity crisis continues
apace. Not only is he beginning to question his sexuality (said Mershie,
rubbing a little ointment on the rope-burns around his claws from last
night), but also his gender, after a spur-of-the-moment cross-dressing
tryst that seems to have left him decidedly at a tilt.

A new Dragon, Dragon Baroque, created a sort-of runtime interpreter that
allows you to play Ultima VII in Win9x. Bit of a coup, really. It's
available over at Gaseous' website.

A spam X-post triggered off a massive multi-NG discussion (mainly with
rec.games.computer.stars) over all matter of things, which was rather
interesting to observe. Plot threads rose, died, got slightly forgotten
about, etc.

I'll leave Phid to divulge his recent history in his own inimitable
style.

Speaking on a more personal level, I've been making a subconscious
effort to generate enough positive karma in order to be reincarnated as
a dragon. Which is one way to say that I've been sickeningly Nice.
Apparently I can now add `The Sweetest Guy In The Whole World` to my
roster of Titles.

OTOC, I've missed rather a few lectures this semester and am rapidly
running out of cash. OTOC (tail?), I think I'm now sorted for a
placement next year... and I'll be working with an old friend, which
ought to be super...

> Okay, that's about it. Hope you're all doing fine,

Well, I'd say `You too.`, but things seem to be pretty cool at your end.
So I'll say "NARFY FOOM!" instead, and leave it at that. ;)

far too many to remeber. ask paulon for details.

not anymore. but ask paulon.

paulon should know the answer.

paulon certainly does.

The elegiac aspects of "Birthday Letters", and his intertextual concerns with
her work. (That's the short version - the long one is 90 pages long and
currently being worked over...)

Nope, that would be Michael Frayn. Stephen Frears is the guy who directed
"High Fidelity" (as well as "The Snapper", "The Van", "The Hi-Lo Country",
"Dangerous Liaisons" and some other stuff). In general, they had some great
people at the Glasgow Film Theatre - some years ago, they had Martin Scorsese.
Lucky bastards, the whole lot of them...

I'm more into Islay whiskies - but Talisker's also quite... nice. :) On the
whole, I didn't want to spend too much money on booze, simply to prove to
myself that I have some shreds of self-discipline left.

It is. :) Very, very nice. (Especially since I've also got a *real* bed - as
opposed to two cheapo matraces <sp?> - now. And if there's any dragons
standing in a box now with paper bags over their heads, singing 'Jerusalem', I
wouldn't be surprised.)

The more things change, the more they stay the same - as a Ferengi once
said...

Congrats, Attentive! Hope you're better, Paulon. Right on, Moa. :)

I don't really know Lady Jane, since she arrived while I was on my first RGCUD
hiatus, but welcome back anyway. As far as orgies are concerned, I think I'll
stay out of that. You never know if someone's hiding pink bows behind their
scaly backs.

Yikes.

Rope-burns?!

Oooh.

Well, between consenting reptiles...

of these days someone will come up with a program that makes U9 playable. >:)

Cool! Congrats on that one. (Chances are it'll get you saddled as the shoulder
people cry on, with not very much in return, but in a sentimental way it's
still worth it, methinks.)

Grand. (Except for that missing out lectures and running out of cash thing.)
I'm lucky - I've come back to three job offers, evenly spaced out over the
next year, so I can just hop from one money-making scheme to the next, while
getting good references. Whoopee!

Hee. I have a record (yes, a vinyl one) with that sketch... Except
that I seem to recall a splashing sound before Jerusalem, so it might have
been a fishtank or something instead of a box... ;)

YayWoo. Just no more damn furbys. ;)

And don't think I didn't spot the ellipsis! You had to think about
that, didn't you? DIDN'T YOU? Hmm? Hmm? Don't make me come over there and
batter you around the head with an olive loaf, my lad.

Urk. Must'a missed that thread...

Heh. She may be in hiding at this precise moment in time, due to a
combination of university workload (heh... poor innocent little first
years... little do they know ;)) and other things, but I'm sure she'll be
around sooner or later...

Ack. I didn't need to read that.

'Tis GLORIOUS!

Yeah, right. :P

I _still_ haven't managed to see the U9 in-game movies _in-game_
yet. *sigh* Kind of an anti-climax when you reach the end, do the final
*spoiler*, and then... it drops back to the desktop. ;)

Urgh. It's not worth it. Trust me. It'll get abused and rarely
cherished... and besides, it's so much more _fun_ to be able to be nasty
when you want to be.

Nasty isn't my natural state, you understand, but it's nice to
have the option. ;)

I'll agree about the saddle, and I'll politely refrain from any
riding comments.

Damn you! :) Congrats. Care to give one to me? Actually, I have a
job interview coming up in a couple of weeks, and I'm trying to insert
myself into various investment banks at the moment, even if they are
treating me as a second-class scum because I'm daring to talk about
something as deadly dull as technology rather than something thrilling and
dynamic like fund management.

Echoing that...
