I recently wrote a world editor for Ultima 6, u6edit. It can
be found at http://3e8.org/hacks/ultima6. I figured this
would be the most obvious place to announce it. ;)
Feedback is greatly appreciated.

It doesn't work for me (Needs later version of Perl) but it looks
very impressive.
In your notes, I didn't see anything regarding the 'behaviour' aspect
of creatures in eggs. I cannot find my notes on that right now, but if
I do I'll let you know.
Basically, the meaning of the bytes is radically different for objects
inside containers. One of the bytes controls behaviour and it seems to
be an entry to a function table.
Experimentation (on guards) showed the values (sampled from deer, wolves
etc) that would cause the guards to attack or flee, or do a horizontal
patrol etc. One value caused the guard to be completely motionless, but
fragile.. when I attacked him, he shattered ("Guard broken!").
I'm very surprised at your choice of Perl, though. I didn't know it
could do this kind of thing :-)
May your U6 editor not be left to rot like mine were ;)

There are windows versions of perl... dunno if they'd work for this
though - I haven't tried it.

When will you be releasing Ultima6-2? I'm looking forward to more games
using that engine.

Indeed there are. But the windowing toolkit I chose, GTK, is a royal
pain to get to work on Windows, and doubly so for Gtk-Perl. It
will take a large effort, likely a rewrite, to port to Windows.
We'll see.

I used Perl because it allows rapid development; I didn't want to spend
half my time reimplementing things in C that I get for free with Perl.
It's a bit slow, but I did write the drawing code in C, which sped me up
substantially. But yeah, it's quite capable of doing this kind of
thing. I'm curious to know if using python/wxWindows would have been
a better choice--at least then it would work on win32.

Really depends on my time and interest level, so I can't really promise
anything. But, even if they're not being worked on anymore, the other
available editors and information were tremendously helpful anyway.
(Thanks.) So, regardless, I've already written lots of support
modules that can be studied and used by other people, should they
desire. Such is the beauty of open source.

Have you tried http://rotj.it-he.org ? It's pretty close to U6,
but won't exactly run on a 286. :(
I'm not sure Jim is developing a U6 engine of _his_ own, though.

Ah. Didn't look at it that far, as you can see. The only gtk prog I've
ever used in windows is a freeciv client, and it kinda sucks (compared
to the linux gtk client, anyway). I haven't ventured into the source of
it... sounds scary.

I second that
