Talking to MdmeDis about sex. Because she obviously knows leagues beyond
what I imagine.

*ponder*

Being a newbie was embarassing too. The jargon... thinking I was so
suave, despite being quite a ways away from being mistaken for being so.

I feel a lot better now. Especially after admitting the first. :)

Hmm. I once said I'd never leave here until the end, I think. I probably
said that. I guess now's a good time to 'return'. I haven't even been
lurking, I have to admit. :| That somebody actually asked about me
was... lovely. *teary eye*

I wish I had a better news server though. josefsbox is unreliable and
has plenty of spam (no offense - thanks for the service thus far); my
ISP newserver keeps dropping posts and some people never make it
through.

Since everyone else seems quite fond of writing 'what I was doing while
I've been gone' posts...

Well, I'm in university still. Yay. I'm taking a Bachelour's of Computer
Science at the Technical University of British Columbia. Recently, the
government decided it wanted to cut our funding, spouted quite a number
of deliberately misinforming facts (I lost faith in the current
government at that point) and had SFU assimilate us. While it's been
rocky, at least I must thank my colleagues for trying; both the original
staff and the new (and the people who have since been let off). I've
been pretty lucky - I'm in the Interactive Arts program here, and I
think I'm getting away without any big program changes. On the other
hand, a third of the learners here have lost their way (Management and
Technology) and are being subsumed into SFU's business program. While I
realize it's a great program - they won't be going to the same 'campus'
anymore, they're getting a different degree now, and many of them would
likely have gone there in the first place if that's what they wanted. I
suppose I should cut my rant here before I appear heavily biased against
SFU - which I'm not (just the government).

In my program, I'm currently working with 3d animation software (3D
Studio Max) which I must say is hard to learn. It's fun once you
understand how to use it though. I'm also taking a sound interaction
course (the first project was making an audio narrative - the next was
creating a soundtrack for a brief movie clip - the current one is
creating an interactive sound-playing device thingy). As well, I'm in
some sort of creative/critical thinking course where we work in teams
(well, we work in teams in most of the courses) to produce... reports.
I'm also in a multimedia course (where we make interactive bits - like
small games, websites, etcetera) and a calculus class (which I believe
I'm failing - again :( ). My math is really pulling down my GPA by a
great deal. :P

I've joined a D&D group. It's fun. It's a good group too, made up mostly
of experienced players. I'm playing a female half-elf gypsy (bard kit)
by the name of Ilyia. Amazingly enough, my flute-playing ability has
saved my life. ;p I'm good with a spear (rawr), I dress in really gaudy
clothing and I would've died long ago, if I weren't in a group of
experienced people (by experience, I mean have roleplayed/played
pen&paper games quite a bit in the past).

Despite what Commander Keen might say, the Weyr has really wound down
quite a bit since I first visited. Guests are few and far-between. The
regulars... are regular, I'll grant that, but we've shrunk a bit, and we
tend to be the only ones on. Someone else noted that the place didn't
seem quite so optimistic, hopeful or bright-eyed anymore. I must agree.
MOOs and usenet and all of these older forums seem to be dying out as
people leave and aren't replaced. Most of the time, when I mention
usenet or moo to someone, they look at me funny or ask me what it is.
You can match the reaction to the mentioned forum. ;p The people have
changed quite a bit as well. I know I have.

I have a lot of ideas for short stories (and a longer one), but they
don't tend to get written - motivation and inspiration seems far away
these days. I'm drawing and sketching a bit more though. I seem to be
best at drawing 3d non-organic objects, and live poses). Right now, I'm
playing with tutorials, and now I can draw furry fox heads. ;p I wish I
looked at these things years ago. I bought a new sketchbook (the
cheapest non-acid one I could find, admittedly), a five-dollar Micron
Pigma pen (pigment ink versus dye which is used in 99% of other pens)
and one of those non-reproduceable pencils. Droll, isn't it? ;)

I even punctuate myself differently these days. People do tend to
change, style-wise, perhaps even adding new emotes (like me), but a
couple years ago I would've put a comma before that last list item. ;p
I'm wondering what else to say, I don't have much to mention. Not much
to mention, of course, unless you want to hear about some more
uninteresting points in my life. I suppose I do have some slightly more
interesting topics, but I'm not a living talk show like Ophidian. ;p (No
offense, Phid!)

Anyway, if you've read this far... my personal eee-maaaayle add dress
is... *g* wtcher at ultima-dragons dot org. That's the address I give my
close and trusted friends. Feel free to send me something. Please. I
don't even get worms or macro viruses or whatnot, for goodness sake!

Besides, I'd like to keep in contact with you all. :)

-WD, now forever.

The thing is - newbies shouldn't be embarrassed, really - people seldom
laugh at them. I say seldom, because there was one group I subscribed
to - dollhouses I think - where a woman was complaining that people
didn't type in as large letters as they did on the other board she went
to, and she had a hard time seeing the posts. It wouldn't have struck
me as *quite* so funny if it hadn't been a group for miniaturists.

You looked pretty cool. I'm always in awe of people who know technical
stuff - like what a file is and how to download and things like that ;)

'twas a crosspost a couple of weeks ago that caught my eye, and of
course I just *had* to subscribe again.... <rolls eyes> and that means
I get embroiled in things I'd rather not. I'd missed you elsewhere, too
- I read bits of comp.sys*rpg and hadn't seen you there - but I'm
working these days, or nights, as befits a Mdme, and thus lurk rather
than post.

I dunno about Canada, but the lack of jobs in the US means a lot fewer
taxes to be collected. Colleges here are really suffering too - my
son's tuition is about to go up by half again, and they are cutting
programs right and left. I guess they'll have to stop doling out free
educations to terrorists. :)

Yeah well - as long as something useful sticks. The team work, if
nothing else, is essential to learn these days. The complexity of
systems demand it.

I think my son got a D in it, but at least he got through it. He says
now that he's finding he uses it, and actually is beginning to
understand it a whole lot more. But it's playing hell with his averages
too.

It's good to see a sort of re-birth in that field. If NWN ever makes it
out, background in p&p sure helps!

At that age, people are changing fast. You need a few geriatrics around
to keep things going while people drop out to get married and have
families and earn money and stuff.

> I must agree.
> MOOs and usenet and all of these older forums seem to be dying out as

It depends really on what the content of a group is - if it is one
thing only, the group will die out eventually, but if it has several
strings to its bow it does much better. Groups like comp.sys*rpg
survive because it has content beside rpgs. The social, or unsocial as
the case often is, side will carry it through the dry spells in games,
and vice versa.

Its like any society - if it is dependant on one thing for its
existence, when that dries up, so will the community (think towns built
around specific industry etc)

You are right when you say groups need new blood. I see Ultima rising
from the ashes and surviving in much the same way IF has - its just
going through a dry spell 'till it gets "cult" status.

> I have a lot of ideas for short stories (and a longer one),

I did see the one you put out here a while back, but I think that was
the last I saw of you - probably because I was unsubscribed also! When
I think about it, I go off for months, then come back and berate
everyone for not doing what they used to.... Hmm. :(

I managed to get the happy days one a while back - from an ebay
customer. He got all offended when I tried to tell him about it.

'Tis noted, but I won't be doing much at all for the next couple of
months - work is available, and the bills more so. It is good to hear
from you - I thought you'd dropped out completely.

Hey I like furry fox heads. ^_^

> Lost is doing some *really* cool stuff now he's gone to official

Hellooooooooo. :) I've still got a couple more (or at least one) classes
that I need to fill in before I can transfer into a university as a junior.
I'm
currently debating what my plan of attack is going to be for that. I can't
go to school full time and work full time too.

I'm finding that you lose a lot of the benefits of college taking classes
piecemeal though. There are things that would've helped me in my
painting class had I been taking drawing and art history at the same
time.

I've taken up with cartoonists because it's fun. I'm also interested
in more realistic illustration work, and am currently having a blast
fiddling with various science fiction and fantasy themes. My first
project my be to conjure up an official character design for Lost
Dragon. I havea few prototype head designs sitting here on paper
that may eventually get transferred to canvas or Photoshop.

>> I bought a new sketchbook (the

It sounds like fun. I have bunch of sketchpads lying around. Pencils of
all hardnesses, erasers, tuerpenoid, oil paints, markers...... It's all too
much to learn in too short a time. I'm hoping to teach myself the very
basics of inking with a brush over the summer.

Failing memory is fine. I know mine isn't particularly concise. :) I
have a habit of appending 'if I recall' to most statements of
recollection I make, as a sort of disclaimer. ;)

Hmm. I always stared in awe at your incredible knowledge of law,
legalities and skill at manipulating such in conversation. I tittered,
chortled and ahhed at your magnificent usage of word and subtle
phrasing.

Oh, and as it turns out - I may not know what a file is, afterall. *g* I
suppose it'd depend a great deal upon the method of storage and
retrieval inherent in each individual operating system.

Mmm-hmm. You tease, methinks. :) As for comp.sys*rpg - I had forgotten
ever visiting that newsgroup. Are you referring to the guide/selling
thread when you speak of being embroiled in things?

Personally, I'm quite happy that you decided to subscribe to this
newsgroup once more. ^_~ I'd missed speaking to you. Do you rely on any
other sort of medium to chatter away?

Aww. :( Well, wish him luck for me. ^_^ Where does he go?

Real social pen&paper is quite fun (so long as the group works well -
I've had some boring/horrible times in other people combinations) and it
brings a facet that can't exist in PC gaming. Of course, PC games offer
other things - I can live with both. :)

As for the groups - I'm inclined to agree with you that groups depend on
and exist for content with socialization strengthening a community. I do
think that pure content without community is as failed as community
without content, however. If a familiarity or intimacy extending past
recognition never forms, then people would come and go without any real
impact or importance. I've already noticed a few guests at the Weyrmount
tend to treat us as entertainment, disconnecting with narry a 'bye' or
'good day' when we fail - sort of like turning an appliance on or off.
I'm not particularly sad to see these sorts go - completely forgetable
and utterly rude (until it befits them otherwise).

As for being a cult... I think for a few people, it's already reached
that stage. ;) As an aside, I wish I didn't miss the UO beta - I
would've loved to meet other dragons. :(

The last story I posted - Quey'la's Bio - was also the last piece I
'finished'. I was very happy - I'm quite glad - you liked it. I think I
still have your post saved somewhere. :) I am curious about what you
thought best worked and what failed about the story though. I love
feedback, I have to admit. ^_^

I think Lost is more of a visual artist than I, having just read his
post. ;) Aside from sketching and drawing (and writing), I just dabble
and quickly lose interest. I wonder if it's because I'm not any good
with other media. ;) Of course, my sketching skills aren't much to speak
of either. ;p

I may've gotten a couple of viruses before as attachments - but they
were from people I'd never heard of and haven't heard from since. I
wonder how many lists and address books I'm in - moreover, how many
belong to people I don't know. It'd please me to have my information
removed from the large people databases in the world.

The last virus that I *know* was a virus was sent by someone I'd met
over ICQ. When I told her, I think she became offended as I never heard
back. It would be nice if people would take the time to make sure
they're not being insulted before acting.

Anyway, good luck with your work and your bills - it's been nice
speaking to you again. :)

Good luck. I'd suggest working part-time or not at all, if possible. I
hope I can get a job this summer, myself. :|

My school is quite interdisciplinary. People are required to take
courses in other disciplines. As well, the courses within the programs
seem to have a habit of reaching coinciding goals or rely upon
eachother. :)

> I've taken up with cartoonists because it's fun. I'm also interested

*nods*

I love cartoons. ;) On paper, I like Garfield and Robotman. On the web,
I like elf life (I have a subscription), kevin and kell (my current
favourite), goats, adventurers, rpgworld, real life, avalon high and...
*thinks* penny-arcade.

There was a recent flame session on the penny arcade forums. The
cartoonist(/s) expressed a pronounced distaste for furry art. While I
have no problem with this myself, some other people seemed to take it
personally and jumped on the issue. Other (idiots) attacked the fandom
themselves, and many seem to know little of the fandom themselves (Yay!
Repitition!), generalizing, making icky comments and in general acting
stupid. I guess people just can't get along - really, I think it has its
roots in survival instincts and upbringing.

Good luck. I'm still figuring out how to draw organic things. :) I think
I'm reasonable at drawing manmade landscape (bridges, buildings,
objects) though.

Hehehe.. The furry artist they ripped off for that particular
cartoon was Xian Jaguar. You can see her work here:

She's a nice lady. I ignored the flameware. ;8)

I do better with organic shapes than I do with manmade objects.
Architectural renderings would probably be the bane of my
existence. I like curvy lines. *cue Mdme*

By the way, I tried to email you and it bounced. Why don't
you email me instead? My email address is in the header - I
don't bother to anti-spam it.

It may not have actually bounced - I sent Wtcher an email and got a
bounce message, but the next day, I had a reply to the mail that
supposedly bounced in my inbox. Weird, no?

"Avalon High" should just be "Avalon", Josh was unable to get an avalon.*
domain so he added the "high" on the end but the title of the comic is
just "Avalon".

start to finish. The storylines are interesting - but honestly, I could
use a bit of regularity.

I seem to recall being a bit confused about that when I first started
reading the strip about... woah, much too long ago now.
