Some critical commentary on a chain-mail hoax and Nostradamus in general.

Have you ever heard of linefeeds?

This is total crap. If you read the French you will see that
someone has taken the juicy bits from 6 or so prophecies
and bunged them together with a few mistakes to make it
look better.

> "In the year of the new century and nine months,

The french unequivocally states
"In the year 1999 and 7 months"

> From the sky will come a great King of Terror...

No, it says some crap about resurrecting the King of the Mongols.

> The sky will burn at forty-five degrees.

One point.

> Fire approaches the great new city..."

The complete prophecy says that the fire will come
from the centre of the earth.

Unfortunately most of the Nostradamus resources on the web seem to be
overloaded, so I can't fully recreate the debunking I did at work
yesterday. But rest assured, this particular prophesy has been
retrofitted to Tuesday's dark events and does not appear as such
in any of his works.

snopes.com has a page debunking this one (should also add that it was
written ten years after Nostradamus kicked the bucket).

I have a dream
that sometimes we stop listening to this kind of crap

There have been lots of "prophets". It would be strange indeed if we
couldn't make something fit. At least after we knew what happened.

Now if someone said in july: "Hey, Nostradamus predicts that something
terrible will happen in new York in september probably involving a total
collapse of the WTC", it might have been interesting.

If we should put any kind of trust in prohecies like this, we would also
have to examine the number of failures. Curiously, this is not very much
mentioned. But I'll happily provide 2 examples.

A couple of years ago one of England's leading astrologists predicted that
princess Diana would marry again, and have children. It didn't quite happen
that way.

Another example. Very often, predictions are not very precise, thus they can
fit almost anything. But occasionally they try to be more specific. Before
the Lillehammer Olympics, another well known astrologist predicted that the
olympics would be a complete failure for our speedskater Johan Olav Koss. I
would also predict that, his results before the Olymipcs was very
disappointing. But he won three gold medals, and he thrashed the world
record on the 10000m.
I can't remember anyone from the press confronting the "prophet" with these
facts. They usually never do.

Come to think of it, sometimes it happens. Again a few years ago, one of out
local weather prophets said to a newspaper that he was not surprised by the
very bad weather that summer. A reader wrote a letter to the paper shortly
afterwards, that it did surprise hom, as the prediction by the same weather
prophet 2 months before was the complete opposite.

Another issue: We are here in an area where the attempts at fraud has been
very numerous. Clearly this demands very hard evidence before we can trust
anything.
